    Wtf petsmart!!!!
So I just went to the PETSMART in Indianapolis Indiana and looked at the poor BP they had, and the tank was at 115 degrees! Humidity at 20%! Wtf! The poor little guy was laying in the water bowl to try and stay cool. There has to be something we, (the reptile community) can do to help these poor snakes!! Again WTF?!?!?!http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...eaecb1c2a7.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...85e95fb20c.jpg

You should tell them right then and there that they are going to kill that Snake. I dont know if legally you can do anything but maybe try notifying somebody about that.

When I noticed that the snakes at my local pet store had mites, I let an employee know. The mites were gone by my next visit. Since then I have also noticed other small changes, like temps and humidity that are within a more reasonable range. I would suggest that you speak to a manager about your concerns, and then follow up in a few days to make sure they followed through on their end.

Its probably not actually 115 degrees in there. Those stick on thermometers are notorious for being inaccurate, and
that one looks like it is only a few inches away from the heat bulb, so it is probably reading way hotter than what the temp
    is on the cage floor.

Might not be that hot throughout the cage since that dial was right at the top next to the crappy light bulb, but yeah, typical bad chain store care. No telling if the dial was even accurate anyway.

Yes agreed. Although I don't know if I got lucky, but my analog is incredibly accurate.

The thing about some Pet Store employees is they work there because it provides a paycheck. Simple as that. Not sayin all are like that but alot dont care about the animals.

I really hope it's not that hot in there. I guess the response I got pissed me off. It was like I was bothering them for saying something.

It seems to me that the smaller businesses get better employees. Once you hit the big city, well your totally right they just don't care.

I agree with that 100%!!! I live in a small town called Anderson and we have a small pet store called "Night Stalkers" and they are amazing!

Well to start with, the height of that analog gauge is close to the heat source so it is going to read hotter than surface temperature.
Secondly that is ambient and not surface temp.
That's the first thoughts when I see the photo posted.
Be glad they have heat unlike others that are way too cool.

Are you talking about the petsmart on 82nd street? Or a different one? I suppose it doesn't really matter since almost all of the petsmarts/cos are bad here in Indy it seems. There is a petco though on the south side on East St that is pretty good though. They had a lovely spider bp the last tine I was there and everything was clean/orderly

That figures, you'd think it being a nicer area they'd take better care but that's exactly why I never go to that petsmart

The one in Anderson is the same way. I hat to even go there to buy a bulb. I feel like I'm supporting it. Just a bunch of young kids who dont care. It's just a pay check. I went to Petco on Michigan rd and it was just as bad.

Back when I lived in Indy I did all my shopping at the Midwest reptile shoes at the fairgrounds. They had them once a month. Maybe they still do.. Unrelated: I love Anderson! Mostly cause of hoosier downs but still

I had a bad experience a few days ago in richmond, ky. Poor ball pythons temp was sitting at 80 with no hot spot and the humidity was 10. I informed an employee and asked her to bring a spray bottle to spray the tank. She said she owns an kingsnake and the temps were just fine. I felt so bad for the poor snake. It was so, so skinny. I kbow they aren't feeding it properly. I don't understand why they don't take better care of the animals. Makes me so mad.

The hardest part of seeing snakes in these conditions is not buying them. I remember back when I owned iguanas I went into a local pet shop in the mall, and their reptile conditions were atrocious. Looking back, they were all in pretty bad shape, but I only knew about iguanas at the time. The poor babies were caked in their own poop, each one had at least 3 different burns, and not a single one had all of its toes still intact. It probably didn't help that there were about seven of them in a tank roughly the size of a ten gallon, with the light in the tank. There were also crickets all over the cage, and I cringe every time I hear of people offering an iguana crickets.

Of course younger me wanted to take them home and get them healthy, but if I had tried, more mistreated babies would have came in to take their place. The best you can do is let the store manager know "I came here to look at these lizards and supplies for my colleection, but seeing the condition they're in, I won't be purchasing anything from this store." Taking them home doesn't work, neither does telling the associates they're going to kill the animals. Telling them that they've missed out on a sale and lost business, plus the threat of telling the other local reptile keepers to not give their business either, now that's effective. As someone already mentioned, they're out to collect a paycheck. Threaten the check, see some results.
