Hides?
What are the best hides for bp's? Right now I have the all living things 3 in 1 castle crib. I like the exo terra snake caves, does anyone use these?

Habba huts should work well, the small ones are working great for my BTS, pretty much anything works if it is
a)non toxic
b) provides a snug fit for the bp
c) possibly retain more humidity
d) easy to either replace or clean.

Interesting you suggest habba huts, I've been told they aren't secure enough? Although, I think they would work just fine if you covered them up with substrate a bit. ,

Note I said BTS. My bluey is a burrower, so I can just situate my hides in the aspen and cover them up more with aspen, making them as small as I want.

Ah. Yes I also have whites tree frogs and have a similar setup to that. They like to go in there to shed.
Any suggestions for ball pythons?

I have some exo terra medium caves for my smaller snakes and some plastic hides that I got from LLL for the larger ones

Re: Hides?
I'm using a small round plastic Christmas cookie tub with a hole cut out and moss inside on one side and a cute stump made for fish on the other for one of my babies. He gets to have some Christmas cheer til he outgrows it lol.

Re: Hides?
I use these for my BP. He is about 2 years old now...I don't remember what his weight/length was 2 weeks ago when I last checked (those numbers are at home). I think it may be time to get the next size up, and will likely other them here (I purchased the one I am currently using at a reptile expo).

I like them because they are simplistic, and very easy to clean.

Yes they are very basic and simple. I just don't know where I can get them locally...

Your parents won't order them online for you?

Re: Hides?
i just picked up the brown tortilla holders from the dollar store and a soldering iron from walmart for $5 and cut entrances. for my adults i use a small kitty litter pan.

Personelly I use the Reptile Basics black box hides and have not had any problems. Just make sure you get the size that is right for your snake.

Re: Hides?
The RB hides are great but with shipping will be a bit pricey if you just need to order one. Usually I throw a few on whenever I need to order something else.
Otherwise anything sized correctly, dishwasher-safe for easy cleaning, opaque, and fairly thin so you can cut an access hole into will work. I've seen plastic flower pots, some of the Hormel or Ramen meals that have pastic containers, plastic bowls, tortilla containers, etc. used.

Re: Hides?
Small and tight around the body, dark.
Can be anything from a plastic bowl to cat litter pan for bigger animals to commercial hides.

My first ball python I used a clay pot with the hole in the bottom enlarged a bit.

Re: Hides?
I've found some nice cheep hides at petsmart. That's what my baby burm and baby anaconda are using. My bps and bigger snakes are in a rack system, that and my retic doesn't fit in a hide anymore

They have sizes for hamsters, hedgehogs, guinea pigs. So technically many sizes. They cost about a dollar or two where I live.

How do you guys determine size of hide for your BP? I think my current hide is to big so I want to get one that's right but not sure what size to get.

What I like to do with a hide that is to big is add a clump of moss inside. This will make it feel smaller to the snake. Plus during a shed you can make it damp to help make the hide more humid. During non shed periods I make the moss damp and then allow it to dry out again before I make it damp again.

Re: Hides?
I mainly use the black hides from RBI.
Another option is to go look around in stores for cheap plastic bowls or containers. Cut a little entrance, melt any sharp edges, and flip them over to make a hide.
