Amusing....just when I thought we couldn't possibly become a more P.C. society, I'm proved wrong.

Interesting. I don't really know of any pagan who is offended by the way halloween is celebrated, but there are probably a few out there.

What about injustices to left handed people? Where are the big news articles about that. I mean, it is ingrained in our coustitution, the bill of rights. We should protest. :P

Well, at least it's not the evangelical christians cancelling Halloween in schools again because its pagan nature offends their sensibilities. My older daughter tends to be easily offended and she gets bothered by people's portrayal of witches as evil, ugly old hags (among other things that offend her), but I've yet to meet a mature Wiccan who got offended by Halloween costumes and decorations.

    heh heh

I was gonna say that... There are people out there that beleive they are vampires.
What about Satan worshipers? Do they get upset when people dress up as the devil?

I have some cousins that their parents wont let them read or watch Harry Potter, because magic is "evil".
lol, you could do just about anything these days and SOMEONE would be offended.

I've heard of people barring their kids from Harry Potter because of that. I enjoyed the books and movies, myself, and loved talking about them with my kids. I think maybe people have always been offended by the things that cause a ruckus nowadays, but before they were just more likely to keep quiet about it and "go along to get along."

Honestly, the most offended I've been this year, is by the girl in my coms class who decide to give her information speech on halloween. She did minimal research, added in her own christian opinons, and also mentioned the flying ointment and how witches were initated (which has nothing to do with halloween, and as far as I know her witches initation stuff was completely wrong). The "traditional" flying ointment doesn't have anything to do with halloween and came out of the 1700 to 1800's. Bah.

If you do an "informational" speech, you don't make little digs at what you're talking about!!!!

Grrrr. I did a speech on paganism at the beginning of the semster, but did I sit there and make little digs at christianity?? I could have, but I didn't.

Not to mention that NIU is very keen on unity in diversity, especially in a communcations class!

Well, the only thing that really offends me is anything that is different from the way I live or think. Aside from that I'm open to whatever! :)

Geez Schlyne, if I were in that class, I'd be grinding my teeth throughout her whole Halloween speech. I have a few pagan friends, and I know about all of the misconceptions people have about pagans. Pagans don't worship the devil; they don't even believe in a devil! I could go on and on about how their benevolent male "horned god" of old was somehow transformed into a devilish evil creation, but the info is out there already.
Sure, people are always going to have varying religious beliefs. I think that the only way we can all live on this earth without killing each other, is to tolerate others and their differences. Barring anything extreme that causes unwanted human torture or crimes against children or animals, people should be able to live their own lives and do what ever they want in their own homes. When we fence ourselves into little fundamentalist religions, we start hating and condemning others, and we divide ourselves into little armies and fight and tear things up and generally make the world suck. Why must this be!?

Yeah, several people in the class glanced at me during the speech. You could tell I wasn't very pleased with her information.

    I am w/ Ginevive.
My comeback to all those supposed good "christians" is read the friggin bible
Jesus accepted all and refused none. Told us to love everyone.
I hate when they try and twist the bible to suit their own agenda. That is indeed the real sin.

Geez, some people really try to screw up a reason to get free candy, the nerve!

There's a great song by Coyote Run called the Coyote Polka. It has great lyrics for that sort of thing.

I'd rather not about offending someone. You can't please everyone so why try. Like any Wiccan would care that some 5 year old kid dressed up as a green faced long nosed hag. I mean really. And if they do they may need some help.

and as far as the christian's throwin' in their own opion thing. First off, god never said to force your religeon on others. He gave us free choise. You can talk to someone about it, you lead someone to it. But you try and make them come to it.
But he also never said to be quiet and secret about your religeon He says in the Bible that whoever is ashamed of me I will too be ashamed of him.
And this is coming from a Christian, and I'm not going to be quiet and secretive about what I believe is wrong and right.
Now there is a very fine line there.

Plus what could a Wiccan do?
  • 10-31-2004, 02:10 PM
    Ginevive
Cast a spell on you? :D Just kidding there, people. A true Wiccan who practises so-called "white magick" would not want to gain themselves a bunch of negative karma by casting begative spells on people.
I used to be into reading and studying about the Wiccan faith. I have, actually, tried to learn a bunch of stuff about a lot of faiths out there. personally, I see merits and flaws to almost all religions. I really try to find out about something before I form an opinion on it. And I never let someone else shove their opinions onto me; I am too opinionated, lol.
