    Hides vs. Intelligence?
If a BP has been bin raised with a singular hot side hide and no cold side hide at all... then placed in a new enclosure with 2 hides, one for hot and one for cold...do you think it has enough common sense or intelligence to thermoregulate and move from the cold side hide and go to the hot side hide to warm up?

    Yes, it has instincts.

If it wants to cool off it will go to the cool side. If there is a hide on the cool side, then it will use it.

How long is an average amount of time for a snake to stay on a cool side? Ive yet to see mine manually move themselves from the cool side...

All snakes differ, but remember that they often move around at night.... when you don't see them.

Its a solid 91° I held her yesterday night, first time I really handled her properly...then put her back in...so she was probably cooled off simplyfrom that..but chose to go to the first hide she saw... which was on the cool side...hasnt came out since, its the smaller of the 2 hides in in the process of trying to get herca bigger one with not much luch atm...its hard in my area tk get thosd good black ones...the prev. Owner gave me the other black one and my herp. supplier wont be getting an order in for a while...

She looks pathethic in that cold side hide....

She could just like how cozy the cold hide is. They like to be touching all sides of their hide. :)

You could try switching her hides. Move the plastic one to the cool side and the clay one to the warm side and see what she does.

I already did that the first time, I had the black one on the cold side.... thought maybe the cave one was too small and that why she didnt want to go back to it...and preffered the larger black one cuz it had more room... guess I was wrong... cuz when I placed her back in the cage this time around this is what she had chose...I did the switch around a day ago when changing my paper towel from a shed.

As long as you provide proper hot/ambient temps , she'll be ok. In regards to intelligence, as someone already mentioned, it's all instinct. What's the cold side temp?

instead of getting a larger hide for the cool side, you could try using a smaller hide for the warm side ? then she will have 2 hides to choose from but they will both be snug

Mine tends to only use the cool side during breeding season.

The cool side varies a bit but stays around 78-81°. Depending on nightime and daytime temps, I switch between a reg light bulb during the day and red heat light at night because my ambient temps alone are too low in the basement here to provide adequete warmth for the cool side.

Seems like everything is all ok, this morning I actually saw here when I came out of the shower, switch from the cool side hide and go directly from that hide to the warm side.

Out of curiosity, how are you measuring the warm side temp?

Some BPs seem to prefer temps in the upper 80s. If it is a constant 91, maybe try lowering it to 88-89.
