My first ball pythons (vanilla and piebald)
I am not new to snakes or reptiles but just now getting in to ball pythons, but the serpent atrium by me had these on sale for 20% off for members so I couldn't leave them behind. I have a 4.5ft columbian rainbow boa, and I used to have a snow corn snake.
i got the male piebald for 400 and the female vanilla for 60. Next year I will probably look for a breed able female for the piebald.

Great pair for your first BPs! :) Pieds are my favourite. Took me 7-8 yrs of oogling to finally get one of my own! Lol

Lovely pied. But man that vanilla is dark. For $60 she's not bad, but I like mine to be much lighter and more obviously vanilla.

Thanks every one, my wife loved the vanilla so it was more for her I want either a spider or a pinstripe. I read it is normal for vanillas to get lighter with age this one was hatched in June or July from what they told me so is it normal for them to be that dark?
Same tank for now I picked up a 55 gallon tank (48x16x17) with two sliding tops for 35 bucks, I plan on building a wall in the center where the support is in the center

Well that's good. I would suggest getting better hides. The one in the pic looks to small for one snake and two is never gonna work.

They actually fit pretty good in there, there are two and there is one in each right now, they were a quick grab right now they are in a small 10 gallon till I get everything squared away.
Those were here some plastic buckets I got 2 for a dollar at the 99 cent store cut a hole big enough and melted it to smooth it out

Well they are in separate ones because they both can not fit in one. What do they do if they both require heat but cant fit in the hide on the warm side?
-
They are in here for the day, I have never kept two snakes in a tank before would that be ok? I read a few things saying it can make them not eat, if they go in the 55 should I just let them have the whole ting to both of them? Or divide them. Also since it is a male and female would I have to worry about the female getting knocked up before she is big enough to safely carry the eggs
-
My end goal would be to have them separated. I don't see the issue with housing them like this temporarily but I think the hide situation could be better.
Yes, at some point the two will try to breed.
As for being in a cage that is to big, it can be done if done correctly. I have raised my BP in a 40 gallon by giving nice hides, real and fake plants, driftwood, vines, and moss. All of these things make the snake feel secure because it can move around the large tank feeling secure because it has cover and concealment. The key to housing a snake in a tank that is to big is filling it will things that make the snake feel secure.

I hope they breed that is the plan once the pied is old enough I am going to look for a nice breedable female

I do not know if I am right, but if that is a vanilla then my normal is a vanilla too.
Either that is a normal or mine is a vanilla?!

I don't think either one is a vanilla, truthfully.
It is possible the little one is a poor quality vanilla, but it is not what I look for in a vanilla, even as a baby a vanilla should be easily distinguished.
Here are pictures of my baby vanillas:

This is a double gene Vanilla Mojave, you can see the difference even in her:

Even adult vanillas should be easy to spot:

This is a comparison shot of a vanilla with a normal:

Here is a picture from feeding today I don't think she just looks normal

I still have my doubts about that one.
After a few days when she's had a chance to digest her dinner, would you please post a good shot of just her head? The head stamp is the one never fail vanilla marker, so I'd like to get a good look at hers, if you don't mind.
She is without a doubt a beautiful golden color, but I really hesitate to call her a vanilla yet.

I defiantly will, I'm not to worried if she is or not she was to pretty to leave behind for 63 bucks, plus my wife wanted her so any excuse for another snake.
what do you look for on the head to tell the differencedifference
-
Vanillas should have an all over head fade, usually with a lighter spot in the center. Not something as crazy as a spider head marking, but noticeable.

There is a light spot on her. I'll take a picture when I get home from work

Yes, that head is much too dark to belong to a vanilla. Still a pretty thing.
And this other one certainly has the head fade to be a vanilla. She seems pretty light colored as well. It is certainly possible she's vanilla. Although I have seen some ridiculously light normals as well. In fact, the girl I breed to make my vanillas is that light. But her head is not as faded.
I always say, it would be so much easier for me to tell if I could see them in person. Once you know for sure what a vanilla looks like, it becomes nearly impossible to mistake them for a normal. But with pictures....it's a lot harder. I'm going to say there is at least a 90% chance she's vanilla.
This is my adult male, taken outside in full sun:

As you can see, he has an incredibly faded head and very much all over light golden coloring.
Just for the sake of argument, this is the normal female I use to produce my vanillas:

She is very light like he is, but more cream colored than golden, and her head fade is not as strong.
