Shipping Delay
Ugh! I'm so upset!
I won a male Silver Streak from a snake auction -- from a very good and well known breeder.
Well FedEX got delayed and he didn't arrive today. He's now scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I've never had this happen, but I'm not pleased. Actually, I'm on the edge of my seat.
The breeder packed him with 72 hour heat, which he says he always does in cold weather in case something like this happens. I'm REALLY happy that he thought ahead like that. But of course, I'm still worried. :(
Keep your fingers crossed, guys.
I'm filing a complaint with FedEX -- $40 is a lot to pay NOT to have overnight shipping happen overnight.
Anyone else ever had something like this happen?

In the last year two of my packages were delayed (plane issue and the other was routed in the wrong direction) but since I pack well the animals made it just fine.

Re: Shipping Delay
It does suck! I've had it happen once and its definitely stressful. In my case, my snake arrived safe and sound the next morning.

Re: Shipping Delay
This is my second snake from this breeder, and he packs well too, so hopefully the odds are in my favor.

I've only ever had one arrive about 6 hrs late, and after about an hour I started calling FedEx every 30 mins to the hour to make sure they knew I was waiting for a live animal and I was pissed. After the fourth angry call, they rerouted the driver to send him straight to me next for the sake of the animal. But that was a shipping delay in which the package was already out on the truck and may or may not have made it that day. It just kept getting pushed back. If it was at the hub, I would have gone to pick it up. Where did the delay happen for your animal?

Apparently he's in Indiana, and has been since 7:15 AM. The breeder called FedEX before I even got the chance and got back to me -- apparently a bad storm kept them from getting him any further.
If he was close by I'd have gotten him for sure.
-
Definitely let us know when you get him. Best of luck to you. I won't start hate bashing Fed-Ex or anything but I hope they at least respond to your concern and address it appropriately. This isn't a t-shirt that makes Christmas inconvenient if it's late, this is a live animal. They ship enough of them, they should know how to handle this situation appropriately though. Finger's crossed for you.
Oh and congrats on winning him. I'm sure he's gorgeous.

I feel your pain. I was supposed to have one arrive this morning, but I contacted the seller and said the weather wasn't looking promising for arrival today - and I was right. I was out driving last night and it was snowing... sideways...
So, the seller is shipping tomorrow for Thursday arrival, with the weather looking much better.
Hopefully your new little one will be just fine.

I know waiting sucks, but it's very fortunate that the seller caught the bad weather on your end and didn't send him! I'd hate for the critter to be delayed somewhere too. Best of luck when he does finally get sent. I wonder if that's the same storm that caused trouble on my end. Where are you anyways? Aren't you on the VAherps forum or am I crazy? West VA?
The little guy arrived safe and sound. He seemed a little cold but otherwise fine. Good packing really does make a difference!

I'll try to post pictures later. I'm super lazy about pictures though.

Actually I waved off the seller. I'm not impatient about my shipments and I've waited months for conditions to be right not just on the seller's end and my end, but also at any transfer point.
Yes I'm on VAHerps but I lived in northern VA for many years and even now I'm only five miles from the VA/WV border, just north of Winchester up I-81.
Anyway it sounds like yours is none the worse for wear even with the delay.

I would have waited as well I had no idea about the weather. It's not snowing in Richmond! :)
Yeah, he was fine.
I will be more aware of the weather en route next time -- i'd hate to have this happen again!

The thing to remember is that when you apply for a Fed-Ex live reptile shippers account you sign an agreement that you wont seek compensation for lost or dead animals, and they also wont honor insurance you put on it.

That is true, no refunds or compensation for live or delayed packages from FedEx, for any reason, including negligence.
That is why we created the ShipYourReptiles On-Time and Live Arrival Insurance program, to cover that gap. We are the only shipping service to cover DOA shipments. They are rare, but can be devastating.
Glad to hear the animal arrived safely in this case. With proper packaging and temperature consideration, the animal should be fine even with a day delay. Check out the ShipYourReptiles temperature and heat pack use guidelines for cold weather shipping for more guidance and detail.
The most common mistake made this time of year is shipping with TOO MUCH HEAT. Either using too many shipping heat packs, or using hand warmers, which work for a very short duration, but peak at a much higher temperature. That is the most common cause of DOAs, when shippers think "hotter is better" and literally kill the animals with too much heat. With reptiles, a cooler box is MUCH safer than a hot box. We are dealing with a customer right now that received lizards with neurological issues due to using a small box and a hand warmer pack. Literally fried the brain. Very sad. And so easy to avoid.

The pictures don't do him justice. The photo of him from the auction is more what he looks like in person.

Ben Renick is the breeder. This is my second snake from him.
ReptileRing.com is the auction site.

My other snake from him (her name is Disco) is wonderful.
She's so beautiful and a joy to have.
I haven't even named this guy yet, but he seems cool. I am trying to leave him be for now, though.
Ben is very personable and professional to deal with as well. I have nothing but good things to say.
