What Digital Camera?

Hi, I'm looking into buying a digital camera so I can take quality pictures of my snakes. I want a good quality camera, and in the $200-300 range, maybe a bit more. I'm thinking of a Nikon Coolpix.. but if anyone has one of these cameras, could you post a picture you took with it so I can get an idea?

Also, where is a good place to get one at a fair price? http://www.goodguys.com/ seems to be a good place, they also have free shipping, and often give you a memory card with it.

One more question.. does the digital camera plug into the usb port on the computer in order to upload pictures?

As for the usb port question, it depends on the camera you get. I think almost all of the new cameras use usb though.

I was just about to make a post asking this same question :) I'm also interested in a high quality digital...or if people could post what they currently use, that would be great.

You can use www.pricewatch.com to search for the cheapest price on a digital camera. Be warned that some of the sites listed on pricewatch aren't that great though, even though they're cheap. I usually use pricewatch when I'm buying computer parts though, and http://www.newegg.com is a great reliable site for that.

pricewatch is an excellent resource. For "high quality" digital imaging your going to have spend a good $500 or more. That said cameras in the price range your talking about are plenty for the casual user. I to am looking for a new camera, for me I want something for photography that will really do what I want. You'll want to compare megapixles and digital zoom vs optical zoom capabilities. LCD displays are a waste of battery power in my oppinion. If your really into it you may want to look at other options such as changeable lenses...this is something I'm looking for.

What I really want is to be able to take nice crisp, detailed pictures of reptiles for computer use (not printing out) so that when I start breeding snakes, and selling them, I'll have nice pictures to show.

I also have a question about memory cards.. is there a universal card that is compatible with all digital cameras? How much do they cost on average, and how big of a one should I get?

Our relatively inexpensive Canon ELPH S110 has done us quite well - the macro is ok (as good as you're likely to find in a <$350 fixed-lens digicam) and overal the pics are crisp and the colors quite accurate. Can't offer much else given that was our first digital and we've milked it for . . . 3 + years I beleive.

I love our Canon. If I were to buy a new camera, I would stick with the PowerShot ELPH and just get one of the models with higher resolution.

And is the 4100 a good camera?

I can't remember. I think I've bought from them in the past and they were ok, but I really don't recall. I tend to read the return policies very carefully and everything when I deal with companies like that. I had one company screw me, and sometimes I wonder if that stereo I bought was legal in the first place. I know what I did was legal, I just wonder if they acquired the stereo legally, but I really don't know. I can't find anything obviously fishy about comp-you-plus in a quick scan through.

I've also dealt with http://www.mwave.com and they're reliable. I tend to deal almost entirly with newegg now...they ship quickly, i've returned items due to damage, etc.

I have a Canon PowerShot A75, it's pretty good, around that price range.. I've heard the Coolpix is good too.

Comp-u-plus's policies seem to be okay.. they have the best price, but newegg.com is only a little bit more.

Even if newegg isn't quite the cheapest price, I go with them. I've returned an ibm hard drive 60 gig (it was a deskstar, it died...half of the sectors were corrupted when i came back from spring break one year...shortly afterward, ibm got out of the hard drive biz). I went through the return process at newegg (which is really easy), and it was under warranty, so I got a free replacement. I've also returned an abit motherboard. I've had times where my billing address was different than my home address (dorm room) and they were okay with that. Also, when I went through the return policy, I used the email comment section on their website, I've only talked to a business representative once or twice and that had to do with confirmation of the dorm room address.

Anyway, maybe some other people have other companies they can recommend, or tell you more about comp-you-plus.

If you look in the downloads section you can see the full size shot of my avatar... I took that with and Olympus D490... camera is about five years old though (cost around $400 I think) so I don't think I'm much help :) My sister has a Cool Pix and absolutely loves it... I dont' have any of her pics on my computer though. If i find one in the near future I'll post one!
