Meet Wilbur! (Red Western)
I went to sell some babies (ball pythons) to the Vivarium yesterday, and swore I wasn't going to leave with any snakes... but we all know how that story goes, lol.
Of course they offered more in trade value than cash, so I was going to take this nice enclosure for my JCP + $100; but the cage wouldn't fit in my little car, and then I made the mistake of looking into the sale/display cases. I've been thinking about getting a mate for my 4yo female anyway, and found myself saying "I'll take that red hoggie instead, if it's a boy." So yeah, here's teeny Wilbur - named to compliment the female, Charlotte. Hopefully you get the reference?
Sorry the pics are crappy, but I'm limited to my iPhone now:

I need to come up with a "Grumpy Snake" caption for this...

Charlottes web was one of my favorite movies when i was younger. Then they made that horrible live action one. I was always creeped out by the scene when the rat was singing in the fair, I don't know why. I just got my first Ball Python last month but one day I hope to own a hognose. I don't see them much in the stores around here.

I don't think I've seen the live-action movie, just the cartoon (and read the book). But since I'm a librarian, most of my snakes have literary-themed names... the ball pythons are named after Shakespearean characters, and the rest are mostly from children's literature. ;)
And yes, you should get a Hognose some day! They are awesome little snakes, and Charlotte is probably my favorite of the whole collection (almost tied with Kipling the JCP & Toby the pastel BP). Baby Wilbur seems pretty nice so far, but I'm still nervous about handling him because of his teeny-tiny size. Afraid I might lose or squish him, lol.

Thanks! I took him out (of his tub) last night to show a friend, and just can't believe how tiny he is... he's practically the size of a ring, and my hands aren't very big. :D

P.S. If you look at it upside-down, he has a weird human face-looking pattern on his head. LOL

He is very cute. I want a hognose eventually. I can't get over how small he is though!

I know, right? I'm nervous that he'll manage to escape, so I added binder clips to his tub & keep checking on him! Charlotte wasn't that small when I got her, as I purchased her online and had to wait a few months for delivery (due to weather at the time).
Anyway, as I said above, you won't regret getting a Hognose... they're wonderful little snakes, IMO. :)

P.S. Do you guys think he can even handle a pinky mouse, or will I have to behead one? Blech.
-
If he can eat the head he ought to be able to handle the rest too. I picked up a young hatchling this year and it was able to take day old pinks without a problem.

Awesome! He looks like he has great personality. I think his pattern looks more like E.T. than a human though. Good pick!:D

Pinky is fine you would be surprised of how much they can eat. ;) and remember to feed frequently every 3 to 4 days.
Cute hog BTW :gj:

He's beautiful! I just heard about them the other day. My fiancée loves venomous snakes, but, of course we can't own a Rattlesnake or Cobra. Lol. But, I heard Hognose are pretty docile and have a mild venom, so I've been reading up on them before we decide to get one. If you have any advice on taking care of them, I'd love to hear it, too!

Thanks! Finally got him some pinkies yesterday (was working too late all week), and he took one with ZERO complaints... was a bit of a struggle for him to get down, but I wouldn't say it was too big. So it looks like he'll be a good eater, which has always been the case with Charlotte too. He didn't even hiss at me, like Char always does when she smells those mice. :P
Nom nom nom...

(please excuse the dirty-looking bowl; it's not actually DIRTY, I just have problems with getting "hard water stains" off of them)

Haha; yeah, I guess it does look more like E.T.! He seems very sweet thus far, and is curious/active but totally okay with me handling him... good pick, indeed.

They are only "rear-fanged venomous," and (if I'm not mistaken) actually classified as non-venomous Colubrids. You'd have to let them CHEW on you to even become "poisoned," and then you'd only have a mild rash if anything. Supposedly people who are allergic to bees can be more susceptible, though, so that's something to consider if you have the allergy. They're also pretty easy to care for, imo... Charlotte has always been a GREAT eater on f/t mice, and they stay small enough for a 32qt tub and 1 mouse/week forever. Some people keep theirs more at a corn snake temperature, but Char has always been in my BP rack without complaints. I did have her with the corns for a while, but she was more restless and agitated there - perhaps just because it's more isolated, and unlike most snakes, she seems to enjoy frequent attention/handling. Anyway, let me know if you have any specific questions!
