    Must have morphs?
What are some of the "must have" morphs for someone just starting out with a few breeding projects?

How about the most versatile color producing morphs?

Personal faves. Pastel, Spider, Pinstripe, Lesser. Can make quite a few nice combos with them alone! Enchi always seems to add to a combo.

Well that varies from person to person. Mine are axanthic, clown, leopard, fire, pastel, and pin.

My personal favorites are Fire / Spotnose / Lesser / Leopard / Pastel...those make up the bulk of my small collection.

There is no staple genes really, it is what you like.

For me, Enchi, Fire, and Yellow Belly can look awesome on their own, but they definitely make everything better that they're paired to. Besides those, I love Clown, Leopard, Orange Dream, Sugar, and pretty much everything else I already have in my small collection. :)

Those that make everything look better, Hypo, Enchi, Fire, Orange Dream, YB those are the must have enhancer morphs IMO

I agree with Deborah. The only one I'm missing in my collection is OD.

Enchi's seem to be a common favorite among breeders. I haven't seen one in person yet but I'll definitely be looking for something at the next repticon here.

    Paul's Pieds
    Re: Must have morphs?
I have been down the route of having one of everything. Now I am starting again and just buying what i like. I am deciding to please myself rather than think about what the current fashion is. People go bananas about fashionable paint jobs. For me the must have' gene is pied. Everything looks better as a pied but I realise that is just me and I think too many people collect what they think they ought to have rather than what they wish to keep.

I like alot what i have in my collection, the only gene's i am realy looking for to add in the future are cinnamon, axanthic, GHI and maybe banana but that is what i like and with those added to what i already have, i'll be able to make so many of the designer morphs i would like to make/have. Alot of people want enchi but i am not a big fan of enchi though they look great in some combo's

I like a variety of morphs but ones that that can really change when combined with another morph are awesome. I bought my coral glow male and calico female specifically to make calico glows. They look amazing and there doesn't seem to be many around.

You should keep the morphs you find the most attractive, regardless of what other individuals say. Look through photos of different morphs and see what you find the most appealing.

The beauty of it is that there are so many choices out there everyone's list is probably a little different. I personally like working with Pieds, Clowns, Mystics and lessers

    Re: Must have morphs?
I cannot argue with many of the "enhancer genes" people have already posted but, really it comes down to working with animals you want.
You can maintain a passion for animals you enjoy far longer than by chasing fads or what other people want.
    You must ask yourself,
Are you more interested in funky pattern mutations or, are you more interested in colour mutations?
What types of colour mutations appeal to you the most? Darker animals, washed out animals, lighter animals, or higher contrast animals?
How much money are you willing to invest in a single animal?
How much time are you willing to tie up in a project?(this will help sort out if recessive is a good route or more of a focus on co-dom and dominant is better for you)

Then you will be busy hunting down the absolute best animals of the types you like and can afford and you'll be off to the races.

My personal must haves are Enchi, Fire, Mojave, Specter, Yellowbelly, Orange Dream, Pinstripe, Genetic Stripe, Lesser/Butter, MJ Axanthic, Pied, Clown, Blade, GHI and as they become more affordable, Sunset and Bamboo.

Not putting recessives into play- Enchi, Fire, YB and Butter.

I think of it this way.... What if I could only use single gene males? What would make female "x" look nicer?

Prices on Ball Pythons are plummeting. Your best bet is to find some genes that you like AND will be easier to sell. Recessive Recessive Recessive...Need I say more. Bananas went from 5k to $300 in one year. Next year they will be under $100. Co-dom combos are commonly hitting 5+ genes..it's almost silly. Here are a few that I think are both a good investment and visually appealing.

    Recessive:
Hypo/Ghost - They make almost everything better IMO.
Pied - Still probably the biggest wow factor to a snake newb. so they will always sell.
Albino - Match with a gene that will bring out the contrast like a leopard or black pastel.

    Co-dom:
Leopard: These are hot right now and reasonably priced.
Lesser: Still a fav of mine. combine it with a leopard.
fire: midas well throw some fire on any combo.

    Avoid:
Spider: with the wobble and the fact that these were completely over produced I wouldn't bother.
Champagne: I even own a mimosa, which i think is one of the only appealing champagne combos.
Banana: every body and their whole damn family got a banana this year and are sticking them to all their females

I have ton's more opinions, but these are a few :)

Yes, please avoid the Banana while we make our Banana Pieds and Banana Clowns ;)

I've been wondering the same thing; I'm coming back from the hobby since 2008 and it's amazing how things have changed. I have been relentlessly researching, trying to figure out what's in, what's out ... but I can't keep up. I see people hatching things out that they don't even know what they are! Therefore, I'm just going with whatever happens, happens lol.

I picked up an emperor pin, because she's fabulous. Then I picked up calibee het ghost, because he's fabulous. I will pick up some fabulous ghost female stuff and everything will be just fabulous because I like my snakes!

You see it, you must have it ... it's a must have morph

For me enchi and OG do it, love the patterns enchi can create with other mutations, and OG makes everything brighter and cleaner. Hence why I have so much hypo/ghost hets lol.

Honestly depends on what you like. Mine are Spider, Pastel, Fire, Pinstripe, Lesser. You can make some awesome stuff with that alone.
