I don't know if it's just me, but he seems a little underweight and maybe slightly dehydrated. I don't know, maybe it's just the vet tech eye I have. If you can pinch his skin on his side, not hard, but enough to raise it up off of his body, and it stays for more than 1-2 seconds, then he is dehydrated. Maybe a good hour long soak would do him good. Just looking out for your new guy. :)

Oh! And definately make sure to get a fecal done on him/her. Since the Petco bps are kept together, there's an increased risk of a parasitic infection. If one has it, the others WILL get it. You don't need a vet appt. to do this, just get a fresh fecal sample, make sure you keep it in the fridge if it's going to be more than a few hours before you go to the vet. Oh and a baggie might be helpful ;) (it's an inside joke)

    Explanation of inside joke:
My teacher Sue was out with the cows the other day and didn't have a baggie... So she just scooped some poo in her hand and walked back a few thousand feet to school. She's funny like that :-D

I tried that and he's not dehydrated. At least from what you've said anyway.

Yeah, I thought he looked a bit thin to me too. But he's looking good nonetheless. :) Love the pattern. Good luck with him. :)

Oh, and bpbabe, I think her teacher works with cows because she's a vet tech..so her teacher is teaching the vet practice..hence the cows. :)

    Close one last night
Remember guys/gals, he's just a baby. He's supposed to be small ;). Often times it is very difficult to judge size and weight by pictures.

The thing that tips me off the snake is probly not eating or has a parisite load is the last third of the body being considerably thinner in proportion to the head and the rest of the body.
A healthy, feeding juvie will have a nice thick rounded looking last third
when buying from a pet shop always ask to see the animal feed if they wont , dont buy ... .A non feeder only complicates things in the even that you do have parasites.. hard to run a fecal without ....the feces , and treatment takes its toll on under weight animals much more quickly

That's what I was noticing Robert. He didn't have the normal "baby fat". Most of the parasites snakes can get either feed off of what the snakes eat which makes them lose weight from not getting adequate nutrition, or the parasites attach themselves to the walls of the intestines and suck blood, making the snake anemic, and in a baby, that is not good. If when the snake goes to the bathroom, and it's runny, it's a sure sign of parasites. He may have parasites, but still have firm feces. But if no poo occurs, I don't think the vet is going to want to stick a fecal loop up the snake's hiney. Poor little guy. If he does eat for you, that's great. :) Good luck with him :-D

BPbabe, yes my teacher does play with cows. Our Longhorns are the most personable cows I've ever been around. We also have 2 Longhorn calves that were born a day apart and also a Black Angus baby born a few days ago. So cute :) I got to hold the first LH baby trying to get him to call to his mom. LoL

Dudes, I'm pretty sure the only reason he's thin is because he hasn't eaten in while. And the angle of that pic is a bit stange. He is thicker in the last section of his body. But just in case he does have a parasitic infection how do I get rid of it?

When you take him to the vet, take a FRESH poop sample with you. One of the techs will do a fecal check under the microscope and determine whether or not he has parasites. What parasites he has will determine what he will be treated with and for how long. You cannot diagnose parasites by yourself even though you can buy wormer at the feed store. If snakes are kept together, as your's was since he was bought at Petco and they keep them together, there is a greater risk of a parasite infestation. If one has it, they will ALL get it. Even if none of them had anything, just being kept together, and if not cleaned out regularly, they can get parasites just from being around each other's poo.

In short, just get your little guy and his poop to the vet so you can rule out the parasites and get some weight on the little booger. A fecal check shouldn't cost you more than $15, and wormer is cheaper than all get out. If the vet wants you to pay more than $20 for a fecal check, go somewhere else.

Good luck with your new snakie :)
