New Reptile Breeder Directory Website! Breeders Can Sign Up Now for FREE Listings!
As a breeder of various reptile species and small business owner myself, I know how hard it can be to get enough website traffic to sell animals! And I'm tired of writing up classified ads and paying for them in order for customers to find what's already listed for sale on my website! Classifieds are okay for shopping if you are looking for something specific, but my favorite way to shop for reptiles is actually browsing breeder websites. That often proves challenging, though, because there are so many breeders of many different species and not many of organized ways to locate them!

So, recently I decided to start a comprehensive online reptile breeder directory and was fortunate enough to secure the most logical URL that I could think of for such a site: www.ReptileBreederDirectory.com. The idea here is that small business reptile breeders that register can have FREE breeder profiles on the site with basic information on who they are, what species they produce, location, contact info as desired and links to their websites, Facebook pages or whatever consistent online place they use to post their reptiles for sale. My hope is that the directory will bring more traffic to independent reptile breeders and businesses at no cost to them, while facilitating shopping for their potential customers!

Anyway, the basic website is now published online, but I haven't published the breeder listings just yet. I still need more of those, and am hoping that some of you breeders here will sign up and give it a try. It's totally FREE! No harm in trying it out to see if it brings more traffic to your business and helps boost sales, right? It is super easy to sign up as a breeder! All you have to do is fill out the automated blue form from the site, which I have linked here, and I will re-publish the site with breeder profiles as soon as I feel like I have enough breeders signed up. Anyway here is a link to the EASY automated Reptile Breeder Information Form you can use to register: Reptile Breeder Information Form

    Thanks! :)

Oh wow this is such a great idea! Thanks so much for taking the time to help out small breeders that are having trouble selling all there animals. I will definitely be signing up for this when I start breeding and get my site up and running :) I hope the site really takes off.

    Very cool...good luck with this!!

If I could make a suggestion though, you might want to have a website designer take a look at it and give it a few tweaks to make it more user friendly and inviting. The red-on-blue text (for instance) is extremely off-putting and won't make anyone want to stay on the site long enough to see what it has to offer. The idea though, is very intriguing and I hope you can make it work!

Thanks for your nice comments! The red on blue sign isn't permanent. It's just a temporary sign to let people who land there know that the site is brand new and not fully functional just yet. I can change the colors very easily. Any suggestions for a different color scheme that would look nice but still get people's attention?

It's a great idea, and I really wanted to check the site out. But like JLC said, that red text on blue is harsh. I couldn't read it, had to leave the site. It just really hurt my eyes and head.

Okay, I replaced the red letters on the temporary sign with light green letters. Take a look: Reptile Breeder Directory. Does that make it easier to look at? And does it get your attention enough?

It's a great idea and a great domain name however, the problem with the layout and the color scheme is that it does not look professional therefore whether on are on the breeder's end or customer looking for a breeder it is not inviting nor does it look legit.

Getting a professional look will go further compare to getting attention with flashy colors.

Not sure how you are hosting your site but here is a tip try to have it powered with wordpress, wordpress has tons of professional looking templates that are free.

Thanks for your feedback, Deborah! I have professional design software with all kinds of templates available, but I didn't see any that I particularly liked for this type of a website. I think the layout I have is fairly typical, and I don't find the color scheme particularly flashy myself. Is the blue too bright? Can you tell me specifically what you think doesn't look professional about it? Colors and layout are very easy to change, and I can certainly tweak them easily enough.

Aside for the concept or the layout - great idea to run Google Adsense on the pages. Even if nobody really uses it, as long as you do your SEO well you'll make some cash!

The design looks very 1999... Definitely anything that looks modern will look more professional imo. That shade of blue is blindingly bright, and the color scheme is too contrasting.

I actually don't expect to make much cash with the Google ads. From my experience with them, you are lucky if the money you make even covers your hosting fees.

So, the blue is too bright? I tend to like bright colors myself, so it's easy to get carried away. I can easily tone down the color, contrast and tweak the layout. That stuff is fun and easy! Thanks for the feedback! :)

Go with a color scheme that's easy on the eyes. This means you need decent contrast so that text is readable, while avoiding backgrounds that are either black or white. Vivid/neon colors also should not be used for either background or text.

WTF is up with that picture in the top right? The snake is fine, the tongue action not so much.

Menu option 2 can simply be labelled "About". It's pretty standard that "About" on any page means that page/site/etc, and not someone else's.

Change menu option 7 to read "List Your Business FREE". Active voice, not passive, will draw more attention and it fits better in the block.
On the List Your Business page if you're going to reference your Facebook page, include a link to it.

Color and unrelated advertising are my issue, colors wants to make you close the page and unrelated advertising almost make it look like on of those free domain. If you put advertising make it so it's not overweening and taking away from the content. Use larger banner for the bottom of the page and if you chose sides, chose one side Don't do it on both and use smaller banners.

Color scheme you want to stay within are easy on the eyes and fairly neutral, shades of grey, black and white, shades of beige....etc you can use other colors as well but they need to be soft, pastel like and you want to stay with matching colors and use no more then different ones.

You want to avoid any bright neon type colors it does get the attention but I did not stay on the site very long because the color we're just too much and I am sure many will do the same.

Personally I am a fan of the following pages designs and each has characteristics that can be used to "flow" better to your vision...

Okay, I have edited the site layout. I made the blue much more subdued and changed the background to gray, which reduced the contrast a lot. I added some gradient coloration to the gray, like they have on a lot of the templates. I eliminated the snake's flicking tongue and all other color besides blue that was present. If you see any bright colors now, they are probably from Google display ads. I'm not sure why Google was displaying ads that were unrelated. They are supposed to match the content or leave blank space if there are no content matching ads available. Anyway, I think it looks way more subdued now. Take a look and let me know if you guys think it looks better. Thanks! :) Reptile Breeder Directory

Wens it gonna have breeder info on it? This gonna be a national or international list? Are you gonna have the list of breeders put into specific areas, for ease of searching, or just have them all jumbled onto one list?

I think current colors look good too.

The most useful queries would be by species and state/province (if US/Canada).

Thank you! The directory is intended to be worldwide. I am hoping to have it published with breeder profiles by mid October. Initially I am organizing by species produced, but I would like to make it searchable by location as well. I'm getting a lot of submissions from snake breeders, which is great, but I will have to figure out the best places to recruit for lizard, turtle and amphibian breeders who might also want to be listed on the directory. I think this will be a fun project and look forward to seeing how it does!
