Went to pick up rodents for my snakes, and ran across this one, a hairless rat. I have had 1 hairless rat in my time, and have seen very few since. The hairless trait is from breeding a genetic rex (curly hair) to another genetic rex, thus comes forth a double rex, then you breed 2 double rex's..thus come a nekkid rat. Anyhow, I fell in love with her and had to keep her. She will be rooming with my hubbies dumbo rats.

And finally- Lady Godiva is trying to help me do laundry already..you think she wants clothes cause she is tired of being nekkid?

LOL nekkid feeder :) Not feeding that one off are you?
-
a teacher of mine had one of those when i was in elementary school, i didn't realize how hard it was to breed them though
-
Naww- I could not feed her off, she is too CUTE! Kinda like the dumbo eared rats my hubby kept and would not let me feed off.
I wanted to breed theses when I had my rattery- but they were so hard to get ahold of, that it was not possible, and rex's were a bear go get too.

ah, so you used to have a colony, any trips on how to keep it clean and not so stinky?
i've heard horror sotries of hard hard it can be to handle a large breeding colony
-
i think other than cleaning weekly (or daily) there isnt much you can do.
-
I had a HUGE colony, over 40 at any given time. As far as keeping it clean , I clean thier cages once a week, use simple green, and rinse well. And for bedding, I ONLY use carefresh. Males are ALWAYS stinky, no way around that, females tend not to be so bad. Currently, I have Lady Godiva (hairless), Violet and Stripe (dumbos) all girls housed together, and they really dont have a smell, but they are in an open air cage, kinda like what a bird would be in, and I also have 2 males, both housed separetly in rubber maids, they are all pets, the males stink a bit.

yea, i remember a few years ago, i was at a local breeders "breeding" house, and it stunk so bad, but at any givin time i'd say there were probably 500 rats, it smelled.....bad....
and he said he cleaned the cages every week - but it definitely smelled, and smelled bad, lol
-
Yuck- thats aweful, when I had my rattery going full swing, mind you- I bred for show and pet rats, some of mine were shown.. but I kept my litters down and controlled, and anyone who came in my house, and later walked in to my rattery room, always said they never would have guessed I had rodents in the house cause they could not smell them at all. And I kept mine SUPER clean cause my hubby would have had a fit, it meant ALOT of work, but it was what I did that way he did not start chewing me out for it. And he loved it- all the different personalities, he even helped clean too, so it was not bad.

The guy's rattery that i visit'd supplied the majority of local pet stores with their feeders, and had an awesome reputation for clean high quality rodents, theres just no way i could handle doing that in my garage like he did....you could catch a wiff walking up...EWWW.
I'm thinking about starting to breed my own feeders, just not sure if i want to. In the long wrong it'd be worth it simply because we'll be aquiring alot of snakes in the next few months, not to mention starting several ball breeding projects as well

Meet Teelo!
The hairless ones creep me out a little, but not as much as naked mole rats. Those things are weird. I got new rats today, too, though. I hope this time we won't have a psycho in the bunch.
-
OHHHnekkid mole rats are cool...... that'd be neat to have. HEHEHEH
-
There's a pet store out in Oakwood called Wildside, one of the top three or so for reptiles within a reasonable drive of atlanta, that sometimes has naked mole rats. Once I must have stood there in a trance for 20 minutes watching the darn things because they creep me out. :)
-
hehehe- I like the odd ones, and nekkid creatures top it for me! Bri said she is ERGLY, but I think she is adorable.
-
Odd I'm generally good with. Three-toed sloth? No problem. Duck-billed platypus? Bring 'em on! Mud skipper? Love 'em! But naked things that should be hairy or hairy things that should be naked are things that trip me out. :D

Fabulous name! Love the irony. ;) Now breed her to a Dumbo & make hairless Dums...they look like little people. :)
Good luck with your new baby!

Thanks K, hmmm, you gave me and idea... hairless dumbos, thats something I have not seen yet..... lets see, I could do it in....like 3 generations or 4 to get all hairless dumbos in 1 litter. Hmm, gonna have to think about that one. Wonder what the call for them would be tho, I hate breeding if ther is no one wanting them...
Yeah I thought the name was a great idea, mostly the irony... you know, you r the only one so far that got that...

I have 2 hairless rats, a boy and a girl and also a normal hooded female. They are all sweet as pie. I take them to my classes alot since I'm in Vet Tech school and people have to get used to seeing that kind of thing. I was thinking about breeding the hairless female, but I talked to a breeder and she said it's not recommended to breed the females because they have the tendency to not produce enough milk or not produce milk at all and kill the babies. She just said to get hairless gene carriers and breed them to a hairless male. If you ever produced hairless dumbos, I would definately want one. That would be the epitome of cute. :)

Oh gosh...I used to be into rats big time but they have such short little lives - about 2 maybe 3 years at the most....it was hard on me to watch them develop cancerous tumours and what have you - I had to have several of my rats put down.Very sad. And now I am into snakes and I don't know how I could have any rats anymore what with the reality of feeding rats to my snakes. It confuses me and makes me feel weird. Its like some kind of schitzophrenic sort of thing to have snakes and rodents as pets....I would feel really strange doing it....maybe its just me....

Hehe, you're right...dumbo hairless rats are cute. They sorta look like a nerdy big eared human...in a cute way. :)
Edit: Actually...this pic of Preparation H Raymond from Conan O'brien sorta resembles one. :)
