Re: Im a new ball python owner
What do you mean technical name?
-
Re: Im a new ball python owner
Because they dont have a breed called normal
-
Re: Im a new ball python owner
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think normal just means it's not a type of morph, like the spiders, and pinstripes etc.

Yeah. The species is a Ball Python or royal python with the scientific name Python regius. If you're asking what morph it is then I'm going to have to say it's a normal. I don't see any other morphs that I would call it. I think you were asking about the morph and I'm going to agree with what the guy originally told you which was that it is a normal.

The species of snake is the ball python aka royal python, scientific name Python Regius
It is not any type of morph, it looks like they would normally in the wild.
-
Re: Im a new ball python owner
I meant what you guys said the royal python so I can do a more in depth research thanx
-
Re: Im a new ball python owner
What would it be under when doing research?
-
Re: Im a new ball python owner
I'm slightly confused on what you're asking. You have a normal Ball python. Ball pythons are also called royal pythons. Normal means you have one that looks like they do in the wild. If you want to research the actual animal, ball python or royal python will work.

Re: Im a new ball python owner
What kind of research are you looking for?
-
Re: Im a new ball python owner
How to raise them, feed them, etc I want to learn any and every thing bout them if that makes sense?

I'm currently a "newbie" to the BP world too as I got my first one 7-14-14, I googled and googled for days before I ended up here and this forum has been a blessing to me! I would recommend looking at BP husbandry on this forum, it helped me alot, and if I knew how to I would post it to this thread for you. Other than that feel free to ask questions, people here are really nice (:

Thank you megan this site was mentioned in a couple places I found while searching too thats why I figured I would give it a shot I got my ball july 5, 2014 and he was a week old never owned one till now

Re: Im a new ball python owner
The various morphs are really just a paint job on the outside of the animal and don't really change the basic care in any way. :)

You're welcome. I got mine from a petsmart, and they told me nothing at all, and what they did tell me was wrong. I learned a lot here by asking questions, and using the search to find answers.

I'm guessing between 2 & 3 months based on length, but have no real way of knowing actual age bc she's from petsmart. (I was told female, not really sure of that either lol)
So you got yours when it was only three days old?

Does anyone else find it disconcerting that breeders are sending one week old hatchlings home with newbie owners? I thought it was fairly standard to not sell until the baby had taken at least three meals, which is unlikely when it's just a week old.

I've been speaking with a friend of mine which happens to bread BPs in CA and he says he doesn't sell them until they have eaten and shed atleast once.

Well the person I got him from helped me with all that the shedding and feeding but I want to learn more on my own
-
Caspain just stick around here and since hes so young just hold of on too much handlimg untill he eats a few more times.
Basic rules of thumb:
Keep good humidity
Keep him warm (heating pad or something similar that is regulated with a thermostat)
Young balls will usially eat 5-7 days untill theyre older. Then 1 to 2 weeks between feeding is fine.
Ball pythons can go a while if they choose to without food but usually they will stop eating if they are unsatisfied with theyre conditions (humidy, temp, security) or for breeding season
Keep the enclosure cluttered for security
Feed an appropriate sized rat (as wide as the snakes biggest part of its body)
These snakes are pretty hardy. Just keep the guidelines and advice of people on here and your snake will be jist fine

Ah, that's a bit different then. With many breeders/sellers once you buy the animal, it's good luck and you're on your own.
If you want to learn, perhaps doing an apprenticeship with the breeder, where you help out for a while in exchange for gaining knowledge and experience, would have been a better option.

Not to detail further, however yeah. It's a little disconcerting. I've recently moved to Florida, and am currently looking to expand my collection. Any breeder who has been worth my time, has stuck to a 3 feed rule. I'm currently discussing a purchase with Deborah (from this forum) who's no different.
Any less and I'd be a little concerned. No different than buying a puppy or a kitten under the 'designated' weeks of age imo.

Your snake is still a baby, a very young one. You should feed it every 5 days. Please, take time and read the caresheets and learn, otherwise there will be problems. To be honest, it really doesn't sound like the breeder is helping at all here.

Re: Im a new ball python owner
Well he helps but I dont want to annoy him to much like yesturday I called him and he gave me advice but I want to learn on my own so I dont have to ask no one anymore but every way I tried I get stuck if that makes any sense?

Very disconcerting especially with someone so new they aren't even really sure what to look for in taking care of the animal (no offense to the op). I make sure all the babies have had at least 3 meals in a row without any refusals before I let them go even then it depends on the snake and how I feel it's eating habits are. I know they said the breeder told them what to do but it's one thing to tell someone how to feed, but it's not always so easy to get babies going. Definitely not a task I would feel comfortable with for a new owner to take on for sure.
With that being said, I don't think you could have come to a better place for information. A lot of what I have learned has come from this forum (or links from this forum). I hope you stick around and I wish you and your new baby the best of luck!
