So sister in law calls and said her customer has to get rid of his 6 foot red tail causr they just had a kid and wife says its gotta go. So its 300 miles away but the wifey wants to see her sister... so we gas up and head out. I get there and this retard has only been feeding this poor snake once every 5-6 weeks in order to control its size. It has an unregulated heat mat and a carp hide on paper. Its skin is saggy, its agitated and gorgeous. I picked it up and about a minute in it took a swipe at me. Wifey and sister in law capped themselves. He is gonna be a good boy soon.

So me being me.. I built a 7 slot 41qt rack until I move in october and can build a nice enclosure. Here are crappy pics for now.

Decided to feed him a medium rat and he hit it like a freight train last night... so happy. Checked on him this morning and to swap out his paper towels cause he bumped his bowl. He hissed so loud.... half his towels were changed.... lol

Nice boa, I'm glad he is in a better home! What are the dimensions of the melamine you used for that rack?

    Sides 48x35
    Shelves 35x16
Back is 1/4 MDF at 47.5x17.5

Built from 2 sheets of 3/4 in melamine.

Don't be surprised if it takes him a while to stop hissing and/or striking. He wasn't in a proper environment, and now he's in the boa equivalent of a five star hotel - he's being fed, his temps and humidity are correct, and he's got a nice snug little home. He won't be thrilled about leaving it when you do have to pull him out.

    Score!

This boa will respond well if you do everything right. Simple husbandry and feeding upgrades will do wonders.

I'd certainly let him settle once you have him where you want him, and probably use a hook to work with him for a while.

That appears to be a very good looking snake. I'd like to see more photos when you get a chance.

I will get pics soon. I have held him briefly and yesterday he was coiled at the front I opened it and rubbed him all the way to back of his head. I think cause he was starved, he wants to maintain a line on his food. Trying to score L/Jumbo rats now.

Good on you for taking him in. He's going to enjoy his new home that's for sure!

Love the Walking Dead poster in the background too, can't wait for the new season.

    Excellent,

Don't discount quail. It's very good food source for them. I like to switch it up and keep some variety.

Layne Labs has some good choices.

    You'll like this boa!

    Sounds good.

You'll be able to do that and grab some other supplies for the cages and all that good stuff.

    I love expos.

1 small problem they present to guy like me though. I always want another snake LOL!

He has no issues being handled. I fed him a couple mediums a few days apart to make sure he doesnt regurge or have any other issues. Friday I will feed him an appropriate sized meal and see how he enjoys it.

If he's had two mediums in the last week he should be good for a while. Boas have a much slower metabolism than BP's do, the most my males ever have gotten is a medium rat every other week.

I think another medium before I switch to 2 weeks is in order. He still doesnt look right to me. He is lacking the square shape and still looks saggy to me. He was seriously under fed. 1 Lg maybe jumbo every 5-6 weeks doesnt seem adequate for me.

Yeah that's definitely underfed. Just don't go overboard - he didn't get into that state overnight, and it'll take some time to put the weight back on him.

Yeah these mediums are 130 on the dot so by some they are still smalls. I am starting rat breeding this week so I'll be in complete control of nutrition and size for my boys and girls..
