Record Keeping ... How do you log / what info do you focus on ...
As the collection is growing I am going to start keeping a log/record book of all my snakes. Open for tips on what works good for others and what information do you pay particular attention to and log? Or has anyone found or know of any kind of log/record book that you can buy or download from the internet. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out a system from hearing what others log and record about their collection. Thanks in advance !

I created an Excel spreadsheet with a worksheet for each of my snakes to track:

    • Purchase/hatch date, genetics, and from whom purchased
    • feedings - size of prey and whether the particular snake ate
    • Shedding - when they go blue, when they shed, and whether it was one piece or not
    • Weight - I weigh weekly and track any weight gain or loss by percentage
    • Any special notes - medical conditions, etc

I believe pretty much the same spreadsheet format can be created in Google Sheets which is free.

I use a website called iHerp.com. Since my snakes are pets only I really am not a stickler for detail, but I will usually keep track of when they get fed, when they shed, weight, and that is generally about all I do...

Pretty much all of that but I also track defecations which is good information to have in regards to monitoring health.

I use herperpro. I track feedings, sheds, weights, who I bought from and how much, the genetics, pictures, etc. When I first got it I tracked urates and poo but don't bother with that anymore.

Personally I just use notebooks, blue for boy and red for girl.

I keep track of their hatch date, when they were purchased, when I weigh them, when they eat/don't eat, when they shed, and when I clean the cage, oh and any large bowel movements that make them lose like 100 grams.

I just stocked up on notebooks at Staples, right now some of them are $0.17. I bought 30....

I use reptile scan. It a little pricey but I can use my droid phone to scan bar codes on the snakes and easily keep records. There are some things I wish it had on the program but I like it non the less.

I use simple spreadsheet with dates hours, prey size and weight, start of shedding when it was complete and if it was whole or not, also length and weight of the snake and when they defecate. I also log when their enclosures were cleaned. Also strain hatch date price etc. Not to forget any health problems or mites etc. Misc notes are there too. It provides me with simple view selecting by particular search and also graphs of the progress. And i use both computers and phone/tablet for inpue. Oh almost forgot I also log when are they bathed.

Ima be honest I use to do ALL the

    -Eating
    -Shedding
    -Defication
    -Refusal

But now after 30 snakes, I use a simple sticker method (with my magnet name code)

If they eat, it stays normal, if they miss a meal i flip it

Deification happens i clean, I dont log it anymore,

With the younger, and hatchlings i will log there sheds,defications.. Up until 300-400grams, Make sure everything is on track (and for Customer if they are sold between then)

But after that, i just weigh them roughly every 6 weeks, Sometimes 2 times, (Once they empty out:rolleyes:)

But other then that, I just keep logs of there

    -Weight
    -Ovy
    -Pairings using stamp cards/Excel

I did use that aswell But once you get above 6-7 snakes The scan gets annoying.. Scan for 1 thing Scan for next thing, To put in Shed/Eat/Deficate/Lock is 4 scans, and dam its gets annoying! :rage:

A breeder i know same thing, He has about 300 Snakes, and says, its a poorly designed program for the Breeders it was intended for. As far as time efficancy, Other then that, its a very nice, Well layed out program and clean looking.

I use reptile scan, I can use it from my laptop or scan the QR code from my phone.

I focus on feeds, pairings, ovulations, pre-lay shed and clutches.

    3x5 index cards

    Weekly weight, feed and shed.

I use a different 3x5 for pairing when breeding just to keep track of who she was with and how many days.

I use iherp.com. It's a website where you can keep a record of everything for your BPs. Right now my focus is feeding, shed and monthly weight. I definitely recommend it.

I have an app called SnakeKeeper. It's easy and works very well for small collections. You can export a report to e-mail and print for hard copies.

i used to keep detailed records but do not bother anymore because i have no use for all that data. i take short notes in case i notice any any feeding issue just so i can monitor weight and when last fed, once a snake goes back to normal feeding, i scrap the notes.
there are permanent labels on each tub about the genetics, year hatched, and of course the sex. breeding is the only info i'm recording, i take note about the pairing, locks, weight, ovy and pre lay shed. after the breeding season, the notes are "filed" and new ones will be used for next season. i do take note of previous pairing for the female to identify any surprise hatchlings.
i only have a few snakes, enabling me to keep track of them by eye, i know all of them well and i can identify who has not been feeding/shedding/pooping often enough.
