Hog Island abcess
My hog islands nose is getting big again, I don't know why. If you all remember, she had it when I got her as a baby, took her to the vet and had it cleaned out and put antibiotics on the area every day and it looked great for a long time. I have noticed a few days ago it looked kind of different, so I have been keeping an eye on her and today it finally got really big again....I am so upset she not only had to go through this once, but now shes going to hate me for taking her BACK to the vet AGAIN.....scheduling an appointment tomorrow, wish us luck!!!

What did the vet say was the cause of it the first time? Sounds like the cleaning it out doesn't get rid of it, just reduces it until it comes back. Most likely you will have to routinely do this unless you find the source and fix that. Could be just a bad genetic issue though that you will always have to deal with.

Re: Hog Island abcess
I'm thinking that's it, wandering if I should go to another vet maybe? He seems knowledgeable and all, but second opinions are good!! What do you think?

Re: Hog Island abcess
The vet and I had thought teams caused it, as the person i got it from is afraid of snakes and probably let her hit the tub with her face while he had her....

Going in in the am, 1130, different Dr, one that I forgot about and even posted in the exotic vet list. She's apparently the best in the area, so I'm hoping she can get it taken care of!!!

It may be the same that happens with one of my retics: she'll not rub at all for weeks/months then she'll get a random stick up her butt and rub so bad that her lip will swell and I'll need to swab it daily with diluted Betadine until is goes down then she'll be good for several more weeks/months until it starts over. Upgrading cage size did help though: maybe you can put her in a larger tub/cage and see if that helps any?

Re: Hog Island abcess
I'm not too sure on that, as it has grown a bit more since the pic. Its going to definitely need to be opened and cleaned out, and she will most likely need antibiotics/ointment.

The previous vet something about stent cells or something.

She could be rubbing/pushing when you aren't watching her and therefore making it swell more. Hope she gets better for you! Reoccurring conditions are no fun.

Re: Hog Island abcess
Vet said she looks good and thinks maybe it reoccurred because she has a tooth in her sinus cavities. So, she gave me some antibiotics to inject for 2 weeks every 72 hours, which I included an image of. If nothing has changed by then we will go further as in putting her under to operate. So wish us luck on our horrible crazy stressful adventure together!!!

This is most certainly possible, but not my first guess on this one. She said it definitely feels like an abscess from something, which could have even been left of bacteria from before.

Re: Hog Island abcess
Done with the antibiotics, but it still looks pretty bad. A check up appt. Is tomorrow, so I will let you all know how it goes when I get off work. The wife has to take her for me, otherwise it would be before that lol.

Alright, so, I just got home, kind of pissed to be honest, but I will let you all decide if this is what should have happened or not. First off, they wanted to take a culture from her, but they took it from her mouth, instead of from the affected area. Is that right, can they tell whats going on with saliva??? Next, they want me to give her a Baytril injection every day until they are all gone, and there are 9 of these. She said its mixed with saline, so it shouldn't be as harsh. It says 2.5 ml on the bag, but the syringes themselves are only filled to .5 (1/2) of a ml. I will include an image of course!!!

Re: Hog Island abcess
I have no clue on the swab or whether checking your girl's saliva will show anything.
As for the injections, call tomorrow to see what's up. Maybe there's a typo on the label, or maybe whoever made up the syringes didn't do it properly. I had the latter happen once but I caught it at the vet's office.

The Dr. actually made these up (10 total) and gave her the first one today in the room. I am pretty sure this is correct, I have just never done this and want to see if that dose sounds right to you all. She weighs almost 1k grams, 950ish, if that helps.
BTW, she was PISSED today, she bit my wife, this was her first time every even trying so......here's some pictures lol.

Re: Hog Island abcess
Newest update!! Her results came back and she said it was not affected by the antibiotics, so we have surgery scheduled for next Thursday at noon. She's going to perform her surgery on her very own lunch break. Can't wait to finally get this fixed, like almost $400 later lol.
