Building incubator
So im looking at building an incubator.. But im unsure of what to use.. cooler, mini fridge or wine cooler? Im having trouble finding a big enough used wine cooler for sale. I like the idea of having a window to see in, is it possible to put one in a fridge or cooler? Any info is well appreciated!

I put a piece of lexan into the top of my first mini fridge. I wouldn't try to do the door just because that would be a lot of insulation to cut out.

I built mine out of a wine cooler. There is a thread by sterios, I think was his user name, that has a great walk through. I unbelievable found the exact same one he had in his thread, on Craigslist broken for $20. You can make them out of anything, but you have to be persistent to find a good deal.

I did mine at the shop with my cutoff wheel and body saw

Re: Building incubator
Do you think a 15 bottle wine cooler would be big enough for a few clutches? (20"H x 17"W x 19"D)

Re: Building incubator
Here's the one I built. I got the wine cooler off Craigslist for $35. It could probably do 6 to 8 cluthces in here. I found another one close to another poster here on BP.net and told them about it. I think they picked it up. Just keep searching on CL with wine cooler for a query. It amy take a little while but eventually you'll find something. Also check out garage and moving sales. You are probably going to want to find one that is 28 bottle or better for size to start. That way it will take you a while to outgrow. Best of luck

Re: Building incubator
Just look on you tube. There's lots of vids with step by step instructions on how to build incubators. Especially wine fridges

Have any of you who have built DIY incubators using wine coolers or refrigerators noticed fumes inside the cooler? I recently used a wine cooler to convert into a incubator and while test running it when opening the cooler up there is a noticeable smell to the cooler. I'm sure this isn't good for the eggs.
In response to the OP Id say keep an eye on craigslist as I've found a few good coolers for around 20$. I'm not sure what your looking to spend but this seems to be a decent price. Also maybe try out running around and looking at garage sales, you may find something there too.

Re: Building incubator
What do the fumes smell like? Is it just the odor of the plastic interior or something else?
-
Yeah Id say something like that. Basically when the incubator is off and I open and air it out it smells like "nothing" which is what I would want it too. When I have it on to test run it which has been for a week so far, when I open it it smells like plastic/heat. Imo not a natural smell and I'm concerned that it could poison my eggs when incubating. I'm not sure if this is from the flexwatt or if this is a normal smell.

This could be a multitude of different things Some pics of the set up could really help us possibly determine whats causing the smell

breeding pair? :)
BTW, I found an old pepsi display fridge, the kind you see in stores. It had the old logo on it, so it was retired. It also had a big double pane glass door on it. Not sure where you would find these, but if you do, they work great!!
