Any Red Tail Boa Breeders in Michigan?
I'm looking to get my first red tail (hopefully columbian red tail) soon and I'm checking around to see if I can find any well known rtb breeders. I would prefer if they were in Michigan so I could pick one up myself, but if not is there any that isn't crazy expensive with shipping?

All depends on the breeder and the quality, I think the normal rtb start around $50 not sure though.
I know it's cheaper than petstores though .

I am in Michigan. Unfortunately, I don't have any babies available right now. I may have a young adult or two I would part with though. If you'd like to talk, shoot me a pm. Where in MI are you located?

I'm from Hemlock, about a half hour from Saginaw. Thanks Evenstar but for my first boa I would just prefer a baby so I can watch how it changes as it gets bigger. I think I'll check the Taylor show.

Wow!! I am in Midland! I'm only about a 1/2 hour from you. ;)

I know the feeling of wanting to watch a baby grow. I prefer to buy mine as babies too, even when that means it'll take several years for them to be part of my breeding program. If you go to Taylor, be careful whom you buy from.....

There are some iffy characters at Taylor. Just look over any snake you're interested VERY carefully. TALK to the breeder and make sure he/she can tell you all about the baby. In addition to morph, the person should know lineage, complete genetics, and feeding response for every snake they are selling. If you get "uh I don't really know how he's feeding, I'm selling this for a friend...." walk away.

This is good advice no matter who or where you buy from.

I sort of did the same thing (bought a yearling) with my carpet. In someways I wish I'd bought from my friend Ed Lilley from Constrictors NW and taken his subadult.

I'll say this, if you went with anything from Kali, it would be probably the most conservatively raised young adult you could get. She is religious about her feeding.

Personally, I feel the difference between a well cared for 2 year old boa VS a baby, other than size is not a big deal. You get to skip a lot of the defensive bite stage and you'll 100% know the snake is eating well.

1/2 hour is pretty close. Might be worth a visit.

Also consider you can start with possibly your lifetime cage VS having to upgrade soon.

If I lived in MI that close I'd pay her a visit!!

Hey. Check out Tom Mcarthy at mccarthys boas. I bought a baby Hypo female boa from him early April for $175 including shipping. She's doing very well. No problems so far. Eating like a champ and just went through her first shed a couple weeks ago. They were born in March this year so still pretty young. I'm not sure if he has any left but you could always check him out. Very helpful and professional

I would keep all options open even a sub - adult all the hard work is done!
especially for a first time owner.
Just think, an animal thats feeding and been housed properly for a while means less stress
    for you and the snake!
So explore all your options then decide.
    Good luck.

I agree that Tom is not only a super great person, he has some fantastic snakes. If I could ever get another animal, or if something happened to one of mine, I'd look at his North Brazilian BCC's coming soon.

    Lots of options.

Get something you REALLY want and like.

    Don't go cheap.

Just another option. I bought my boa from Legacy Reptiles in FL.

    Beautiful, Barranquilla, Colombian, male boa.

Originally from the Rio Bravo Reptiles (Gus Rentfro) stock, and now acquired by Orlando and Joel Diaz From Legacy.

I bought this boa at just Under a year old. Here he is at 2.

Look all over and get what you really like and want!

I am located in Swartz Creek, MI just outside of Flint but I also don't have any babies this year. I will however be vending at the Taylor Reptile show this on 7/12 if you want, I can point you in a good direction for good people and quality animals. I would be happy to help if you need anything.

Send me a PM if you would like.

    Thanks!

Tom Mcarthy! I bought my neonate hypo boa (born 3/4/14) She's doing amazing. I highly recommend him however I do not know if he has any available but I really recommend giving him a check. These are not true red tails however, they are BCIs not BCCs. Not sure if you meant BCCs which are the "true red tail boas". Anyways I'd give him a look because he's extremely helpful. Responds to emails quickly and very kind.

Can't help you out but I highly recommend listening to what evenstar says bc she knows her stuff when it comes to boas and she lives in Michigan. I don't own a boa yet but I've chatted with her about them before in messages. She's wicked helpful and nice :)
