New gene discovered called the Mirage
This week i hatched out some babies from breeding my pastel yellow belly male x high white bumblebee. When the babies started hatching we noticed they were VERY light colored and to the point they didnt look real.So i posted some pictures of the killerbee yellow belly from the clutch on facebook to get some opinions.Well my good friend Tim Bailey chimed in and said they looked like some mirage gene in them.I will say at first i was confused to what he was saying. The sire of the babies was bought directly from Tim by myself back a couple years before Tim figured out his male had more genes in it that he knew of. So with GREAT APPRECIATION for Tim selling me Samson here is the killerbee yellow belly Mirage in all her glory. http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k.../babies001.jpg

Re: New gene discovered called the Mirage
The original breeding that produced the first Mirage animals was a Pastel Ivory (produced by me) bred to a Pastel female (also produced by me), and it yielded 2.2 Super Pastel YB Mirage animals. One of those males is what Brandt bought. At that time, I didn't know how those animals would pass the gene, and therefore didn't want to name it yet. There were three criteria that I wanted to meet prior to naming the mutation.
#1, I wanted to ensure that a Mirage animal produced by me could reproduce the gene. Brandt was the first one to have an opportunity to do this, as he had a male, and I had kept a female from the first breeding. I can say that I have made Mirage animals three years in a row, by repeating the breeding that made them the first year in 2011.
#2, I wanted to ensure that the gene wasn't "linked" to YB. Brandt proved this by producing a Super Pastel Mirage that lacked the YB gene (this snake is pictured above).
#3, I wanted to make sure that the female Pastel I have been using isn't the animal passing the gene. Brandt again proved this, since he doesn't have my Pastel.

Brandt was able to help me determine that all of my criteria had been met, and therefore I wanted to name the mutation so that everyone could have something to call it. There is obviously more work to be done, and due to the animals I have, It has been hard for me to get the gene isolated from YB and Pastel, but it is a work in progrss. I can say that I have produced two Yellow Bellys and they are very extreme, and I believe they may be Mirage gene without the Pastel gene included. I will attempt to get some pics of those animals soon.

I'm just a small scale breeder who has bought a few animals from Tim,
so when he offered to let me buy into the project I jumped at the opportunity
and bought in with a super pastel yellow belly mirage female, one of the first two females.
Now three years later to see the power that this gene may hold shows that our belief was justified.
The animals you produced are stunning and can't wait for the post shed pictures!

Yes I was waiting till I talked to Tim and had it verified as mirage.
I am so looking foward to seeing all the animals that will come from the breeding of this new gene!
I am also hoping the yellow belly male I have goes as well he's got to be mirage also.
will definitely be following this thread.

We think this is the Mirage gene by itself .Its not a yellow belly and its not a normal but since this is newly discovered its going to be awhile before we are sure. http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...agemale012.jpg, http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/k...agemale016.jpg

There was a thread recently where someone hatched a pretty gorgeous "normal" that looked YB-ish but it didn't have the right belly. Wonder if there is any possibility it is Mirage? The possible combos in that clutch didn't look as dramatic as these, though.

I posted in that thread in response to your post. The only way they could have the mirage gene is if they bought a snake from Tim Bailey and it was a pastel yellow belly or super pastel yellow belly with the mirage gene
