Interesting new hide

My young Firefly found my decorative conch shell to be quite cozy.

Between the sharpness and the tendency for BP to get stuck in the tightest places, it's really not the best idea.

She gets out just fine. It is a really big shell and she is still pretty small. The inside of the shell past the lip is really roomy. But after a few more months of steady feed this will not be an option.

You will not know that hide is to small until it is to small.

Inside those shells have very jagged edge's and sharp corners. This is like placing a trail of broken glass that your snake "will fallow" and as soon as it goes off track its a gonner! please before its too late give it a semi normal hide, there is no "Well hes stuck let me open this hatch" option with a conche shell

Don't be surprised when your cracking that shell open one day.

I have removed the shell from her enclosure. She has a log to hide under most of the time, but I thought the shell was a really cute picture. The inside did not feel very sharp or I would not have let this go on. When she came out on her own the other night I just removed the shell. It is back on the display area by my tv where she first explored it. The shell had to be washed first because it is covered in springtails. I think eggs hitch a ride on my substrate. Any ideas on getting rid of them?

TBH you can leave them, they are like little helpers and will just eat/manage all the bacteria, Theres alot of places that sell lil groups of them for cages. Unless they get out of control i'd let them be.

Im glad you removed it. You have to remember that snakes reverse is not very good in tight spots. Also they don't always realize that you are trying to help them get unstuck and that can make them stick themselves even worse. The safest bet is using proper hides. Half logs don't offer much security to the snake being open on both ends with large doors. Many here use these.

Would it help if I sealed one side of the log? I could cut some old wood, nail it on one end. Would that make her feel more comfortable?

Instead of giving yourself more work than necessary, throw some tissue boxes in there; black out 3/4 sides with paper (then you can push the half log against one dark side), or buy a couple cheap hides. You'll want at least 2 hides in the vive anyways - one for the warm side and one for the cool side. :)

Yea placing the log against a blacked out wall would help with the back. Then in the front you can add a large clump of moss that will block the entrance from to much light but still allow the snake to easily crawl through it.
