Money to burn - what morph should I get
Hey guys,
I'm heading to the reptile show in Hamm - Germany this weekend and i'm pretty excited about it.
I'm looking to pick up something pretty special, although currently I don't know what!
First and foremost it needs to be visually stunning. Ideally with a few genes in there so I could breed it down the line.
If you guys had $3k+ ish what would be your ideal morph?
Thanks!

Anything Orange Dream, GHI, or HGW combo. Not sure what the price point is on Bamboo's but that might be a fun project to get into.

Bring all cash and swing for the fences and try and land a Super Blast Banana. =)

Why not 4 $500 females at that rate?!

OP said he wanted a male, so I figured he's got an extra girl or three (wait, is that even possible???) that he needs a mate for already.
But then... you can never have too many girls. :D

Yeah makes sense.
Re: getting multiples, i'm still new to this so trying to build the collection slowly. I also want a year of keeping snakes before I even think about breeding so definitely looking to raise something up, ideally CB13

Well getting a power male will be good OR as said a few good 2 gene females, I would suggest getting any banana yet as they are dropping fast being so easy to create, and unless breeding this year, youll start loosing value! MY best suggestion IF you do plan on breeding and have money is buy some nice Visual+Het (gene) females
Example
Pied Het pastel
Pastel Het pied
Pastel Het clown
Clown het pied
Spider het pied
(sorry i love my killer pieds/pied but many genes could be replaced with each other)
This is because with these you can get realistically cheap (if 2013/2012) and not at full breeder size.
This will let you get them to size for when/if you plan on breeding and with having visual +het females, you can have a Power house male 3+ genes and take him to all of them to create bunch of amazing snakes!
And since you said you are waiting i think getting females>males is much more beneficial in the long run. As you wont have to pay for the "size" factor of a female, where males are good at 500g (75% of the time) so it takes only a few months to get them there.
Best of luck!!!!

if you dont know this article already, then it will really help you a lot:
http://ballpythonbreeder.com/2012/02...thon-breeders/
i would say, first pick a project, and think about where you want to go with it. the easiest thing is to just pick dominant/codominant morphs and combos and combine them and recombine them into BPs that look better and have more morphs in them.
another choice would be a recessive project, like for example clown. now you dont want to just breed clown to clown and hatch clowns, you want to progress by breeding visual clown (maybe with extra genes) to 100% het clown with new extra genes. recessive projects are more difficult because it takes two generations to get a new codominant or dominant gene into a visual recessive BP.
generally its good to buy females first, and males one or two years later. so maybe spend 1000 for a really really nice and visually stunning female hatchling now, and save up the rest of the money. and if you really want to go forward with breeding, next year buy another female and a really nice male.
my personal opinion: dont buy anything that has pastel in it. its the most common and cheapest morph, and many breeders have pastel or super pastel in basically every BP they have. everything has been done with it.

Pied Het pastel
Pastel Het pied
Pastel Het clown
Clown het pied
Spider het pied
pastel isnt a recessive, and for the beginning, i would stick to dominant/codominant, and just one recessive mutation. starting out with two recessives right away is quite a challenge and limits your options. the most effective way to successfully run a double recessive project like clown pied is when you already have a clown project and a pied project running, and you already have visual clowns with extra genes and visual pieds with extra genes.

Yea i messed that up at work, was typing quickly but he is right, i just gave him an idea, of things to get, as stated you can pick/choose whichever morph youd like.
And as for double ressive yes its tricky, but having a Clown het pied, (per say) being able to buy a power male either clown pied or a pied het clown you do still have a 1/16h chance =)
-
It really depends on the females you have. With that much money I could say buy a bumblebee clown but it would be a waste to have him sitting there for a couple of years if you're still waiting for your girls to grow to size. Then if you didn't have any clown/het clown girls you would have to go out and buy a couple while the boy is still sitting there losing value. Your best bet would be to invest that money into females. Unless you have a collection of adult females ready to breed that you aren't telling us about in my opinion going out and spending that much on a powerhouse male is a waste

Re: Money to burn - what morph should I get
Just to be clear. This purchase now is definitely just for pet-purposes. I would like to breed at some point but it won't be within the next year for sure. Just wanted something that would look spectacular and ideally still hold it's value. Will be looking for a female I think

I think that pretty much rules out Dom/Co-dom...:)

Just get a Pied/Blue eyed lucy/Super Cinnimon/Pastel Clown/
Pieds i doubt will be dropping much more in price and are gorgeious snakes.
BEL's aswell are visually nice
Super cinnimons (are nice if not planning to breed)
And well pastel/killer clowns are amazing

Re: Money to burn - what morph should I get
So I got back from Hamm with these beauties. Couldn't be happier!
Male Banana:

And this female Pied who is MOODY. Striking at everything. Is she likely to calm down? Not too keen on having a really aggro snake!

Re: Money to burn - what morph should I get
Great looking pied girl! I'm a big fan of 50/50s (or close to).
Hopefully she grows up quick enough to make your banana investment pay off!

Re: Money to burn - what morph should I get
Looks like you made great choices.
-
Very nice snakes!
And yea id assume shes strikey because of all the commotion around, and no security! in a week or so she should be fine!
Worst case you'll likely have an aggressive feeder!!!!
-
I'd buy a car.
;)
I kid. But wow, how lucky (or more likely, hard working) are you!! Thanks for sharing.
All the best!
-
Thanks everyone, I really hope the pied calms down or I don't think my girlfriend is going to be too happy with me!
-
thats a great choice :)
when you pair them up you get banana 100% het pied and normal 100% het pied, thats not bad at all.
-
Nice pickups you made good choices. Keep handling the pied for short amounts of time everyday she should calm down eventually
-
Let her be for a week or 2, and she should be fine, there are a few salty bp's out there but most are calm once you get em out of the cage
