Introducing.....
So i'm sitting here tonight listening to some streaming internet radio ... and a song comes on that just didnt seem like it was going to be any good. Just as i was about to find another station ( long freakin intro ), i heard the vocals ... "I can feel it coming in the air tonight .. ". Now being the 80's nerd that i am, i instantly knew it was "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, but it wasnt Phil Collins. It was a band called Nonpoint. I've never heard of them, but their cover ROCKS :headbang: . It got me to thinking, how many cover songs do you know that are just as good or better than the original?

Cover Songs?
Country Roads - punk cover by Me First & The Gimme Gimmes - BLOWS AWAY the John Denver version.
Anna Begins - Brown Derbies a cappella cover of the Counting Crows tune - harmonies on this one are so tight.
Damn skippy!

Agreed!
Their covers of "Sweet Caroline" and "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" crack me up everytime i hear them  . I personally like their cover of "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard". That one kicks major rear end.
-
I dont care for their music...but the one's here of re-makes I do like....
Lean on Me - Club Nouveau
Behind Blue Eye's - Limp Bizkit
Drift Away - Uncle Kracker
-
Not saying its better than the original song, because nothing can be better than this one, but The Atari's did a really good cover of "boys of summer" by don henley. The lead singer of the Ataris sounds a lot like don in the original song.
-
jessica simpson, "take my breath away" sung originally by berlin
-
personally i think jessica simpson sounds strained and constipated in that song. she has a great voice and all, just something about that song in particular--seems like she was struggling with it or something. it pains me a little to listen to.

I hate cover songs, except on very rare occasions, of which I can think of very few. 311's version of The Cure's "Love Song" is okay. Iron and Wine do a good cover of Postal Service's "Such Great Heights". No Doubt's verion of "It's My Life". Mostly my philosophy is write your own darn song.
-
ha ha, yeah gen, i'm kinda with you on that.
-
Richard Cheese lounges up quite a few (humorish)
Still waiting to record mah sludge version of Tax Man :P
-
OMG Richard Cheese covering Limp Bizkit's "Nookie" is GREAT! But Jessica Simpson trying to re-do Berlin? ewww! I gotta admit, I do enjoy Amy Ray's cover of the Violent Femmes' "Blister in the Sun" and somewhat like the Cowboy Junkies' version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" (though I don't think it had the gritty impact of the original).
-
I've been branded a heretic by some because I personally think most of the covers of the Beatles' songs were better than the originals.
Granted, I've never really cared much for the Beatles anyway...
-
Of course, no one can compare to Black Sabbath, but Smulkin recently found a Faith No More cover of "War Pigs" that was quite impressive.
-
CHRISTINA AGUILERA...
WORKIN AT THE CAR WASH!
-
Covering The Cure is heresy! I think it's like an 11th commandment...."Thou shalt not imitate Robert Smith."
-
Oh, I forgot to mention, I like almost any cover of a Bob Dylan song better than the original. The man knows how to write a song but his singing leaves something to be desired. Sacrilege, I'm sure. I think I'd like to hear Richard Cheese covering The Cure, though. ;)
-
Johnny Cash doing NIN Hurt. Gotta love it.
Any of you guys ever here Pat Boones tribute to Metallica? It is hillarious!
edit: oh and Blue Monday, Orgy
and Cinnamin Girl, Type O Negative
-
ooh yeah, ok you got me there. i LOVE orgy's cover of blue monday.
-
I forgot to mention Tori Amos's album "Strange Little Girls" which is nothing but cover songs. Tori covers everyone from Eminem to the Beatles to Slayer to Neil Young. She doesn't try to mimic the originals - the Slayer tune, "Raining Blood," is probably as much a departure as you could get from an original - but I love her versions of "Strange Little Girl" by the Stranglers, "Rattlesnakes" by Lloyd Cole, and "I Don't Like Mondays" by the Boomtown Rats.
-
Never heard that one... gonna have to check it out
-
Haha I'd forgotten abou that, awesome cover hearing her lilt out "raining blood . . . . from a lacerated sky . . . bleeding its horror . . " priceless.
Coroner once did a cover of Beatles/Clapton "She's So Heavy" that was just brilliantly executed. Opeth does some mean Celtic Frost covers as well.
In the same vein as Richard Cheese:
Bluegrass Tribute to Metallica beats anything that couple-therapy band has put out in over a decade;
Ten Masked Men have three albums all dedicated death metal covers of Lauper, James Bond themes, Police, BeeGees et al.

HAHAHA , you had me laughing out loud on that one
-
No, no one should be allowed to cover a Cure song!
A few coversongs I personally loved:
KMFDM redid "Mysterious Ways" by U2, and it was pretty damn good.
Also I LOVE Type O Negative's version of "Possession", originally by Sara Mclaughlin; maybe Greenman can back me up on this one?
And for a funny cover song, Marilyn Manson's version of Madonna's "Like a Virgin."
-
"Black Magic Woman" by Santana is better than the original by Fleetwoor Mac
Pearl Jam's version of Neil Young's "Keep on Rockin in the Free World"
Reel Big Fish "Take on Me"
-
Gin, oh yeah... forgot about that one :D
-
Okay Gin and Uber, I love The Cure too, and I did not by any means mean to say that 311's version was better than the original. In fact I don't think anyone should be able to cover anyone's song. I think it's really lame. But I heard 311's version and thought it was listenable, as opposed to most covers where I just cringe. (Plus I used to be really into 311 like 8 years ago.)
And speaking of cringe, whoever mentioned Marilyn Manson's (who I detest) Like A Virgin, it reminded me of Bigod 20's version of Like A Prayer. That's good.
Jonny Cash's version of Hurt wasn't bad, but I couldn't stand listening to it. Love the original way too much and I hated when he said "I wear this crown of...thorns..." instead of the s word.
-
Yeah Gen, that bugged me.
-
oops, my bad didnt know it had to be better than the original, lol, the first thing i thought of was jessica simpson, but yeah i dont think it is as good as the first one, berlin sings it way better
