Re: Dumbo Odd Eye Merle Rat
It's hard to see in a picture, but in real life 3D, he's got them. Now I just need to figure out what to put him with to get the best odds on more merles.

If he's a Merle and not Marked, you'll want to pair him to a Mink. Mink x Pearl Merle will give you 50% Merles. Some might be Mink Merle, but you should get Pearl Merles too.

Re: Dumbo Odd Eye Merle Rat
If you have any Pearl, pair him with that. If not, any other mink color. Since merle only expresses on mink colors (some better than others, like Pearl Merle is good), breeding him to a Mink color will give you the best odds.

I do plenty of Pearl x Pearl pairings, but do remember, it's lethal in utero. 1 in 4 babies will be absorbed. But, Pearl works if you don't mind losing some of the Pearl babies. But any Mink based works. I'd try to stay away from Mink dilutes though (Platinum, Russian Dove, etc.), even Cinnamon Merles aren't as good. So, stay away from Agouti as well.
If you don't have any Mink based, out cross to a black. Then breed the offspring back to each other/this guy.

Thanks. Now, could you post a good mink? I've got a lot of rats that look sort of like one thing or another and I'm not quite sure I'm getting them right.

Two different Minks. They are not compatible. The one in the rear is UK (not what you want), they make crummy Merles. Upfront is an American Mink, which makes awesome Pearl Merles. :)

Baby Mink Merle.
Pearl Merle is aammPepeMeme, Mink Merle is aammMeme, it's just missing the lethal dominant Pearl. Pearl is what makes the coat creamy/pale.

Thanks. I have both so I'm glad you pointed me in the right direction.

Re: Dumbo Odd Eye Merle Rat
Do you guys use all your rats as feeders? Just perusing this section and there's so many beautiful and unique rats! Wondering if you sell pets as well? I don't think I'd be able to feed my snakes something so cute, haha!

I'm on a FB rat group that is really active. Everyone swaps and sells all the time. I can't wait until I too can sell. I want to start breeding for show standards so I can sell to pet people more. I'm ok with feeding the cute ones off though. :P I just save them for last and holdback ones from good litters that are what I like the best. I only have one rat rack (and no room for another until I get a house) so I can't keep very many holdbacks.

What group is it? I'd love I join! I need some minks and blues :)

I feed fancies if necessary, they are all just the same animal, the only difference being appearance. I produce blues and minks and a LOT of other colours here in the Los Angeles area, but the only mouse/rat show I've ever been to was pathetic. Hopefully with all the interest in the recent past that will improve.
Rat Genetisists, what would I get from that Merle to solid black females whose father was blue?

Depends on the recessives the grandsire and granddam were carrying. We will assume the grandsire is aagg (American Blue) and granddam is aa (Black). So that would make the Black female aaGg, so aaGg x aammPepeMeme = aa (Black) carrying Mink. Some will be unexpressed Pearl, some will be unexpressed Merle, some will carry American Blue. But if the black female is carrying other recessives, you could get some Mink based, etc. And if the Pearl Merle buck had parents that carried Blue, you can expect Blue based.
It's hard to give an accurate answer without a three generation pedigree, even then, it's just a guess. Rat Genetics are difficult because of all of the recessives that lurk.
Hold back the does (females) and breed them back to their sire. Should give you some Pearl Merles, if he's Pearl Merle.

Let me elaborate on that. Each kit has 50% chance to carry American Blue. Each kit has a 50% chance to be unexpressed Pearl or Merle.

Re: Dumbo Odd Eye Merle Rat
Ok! That's the same group having a BBQ on the 17th? I took the day off for it!
Side note... I just attempted a humane euthanasia with the dry ice cooler method.... How do I know if they suffered or not? I taped my phone in the cooler so I could watch to see if they panicked or just fell asleep and after watching I just feel traumatized. Any way to know if they suffered? I feel like a terrible person :(

I use CO2, but from a tank. Given the options, whacking, thumping, cervical spinal separation, freezing (which for anything bigger than a fuzzy is cruel and inhumane) or being smacked against a wall, I think it's one of the most humane methods to kill. They have to get dead, so we should do our best to provide them a good death.

Yes, that's the same group. Cool. I'll see you at the BBQ. (My name is Nikki.)
What did you see in the video?
If they just went to sleep in a relaxed manner, it was humane.
If it looked like they were gasping for breath or panicking(scrambling around trying to escape), the gas was being released too fast.

Re: Dumbo Odd Eye Merle Rat
It didn't look like either really. More like standard exploration... Then one looks at the camera kindof out of it (on his back legs with his front on the walls of the cooler) he stares into the camera breathing kinda heavily for a while (felt like forever but prob like 10 seconds) then he laid down.. It looked like he was heavily breathing but I couldn't see his face. Then he stops :/ I didn't see anything that looked like OMG GET ME OUT! It took about 3 minutes.
I would like to do the most humane thing I can. My breeders are pets that live in my bedroom. I decided to breed strictly so I KNOW they are treated well, and euthanized humanely.

It sounded like they were calm. Exploration can be normal. Heavy breathing can also be normal. Gasping is a bad sign though so as long as you didn't see that, I would say it was done humanely.
It it should take 2-3 mins.
