First Ever Clutch - 4 Slugs
Paired a Firefly and a Fire. First time breeding for the Firefly (2012 about 900 grams), but the female Fire had laid late in 2012 according to the person I purchased her from last year. She was a 2010 and weighed about 1800 grams when I began to pair her. I have since read that this can happen when a female is bred in consecutive years.

I have a couple more chances at a clutch from a Pastel Calico - Lemonblast pairing and a visual Pied to a het Pied female. Hopefully my luck will be better with them. Is there anything that can be done to lessen the chances of slugs or is it a random outcome you have no way to affect?

Did you ask the seller if previous clutches were viable? Maybe it's a slugger so it was sold.....just a thought.
Was your other female bred by the firefly. I hope it lays a good clutch.

I only have one female that I have bred multiple years, but she always lays viable eggs, and she has laid in 2011-2013 consecutively, and 2008-2009 consecutively with no problems.

I guess I should have asked that when I purchased her. Was only told she was proven and just assumed she laid good eggs. I have sent the seller an email to see if he either kept her records or would remember what kind of a clutch she had. I'll be sure to ask those kind of questions up front the next time. Thanks!

That's good to hear. I would like to try with her again next year if I can get her back up to weight. I have read somewhere that if they are bred multiple years in a row they can sometime be more likely to have slugs.

Is this true? I always thought you just keep normal temps of high 80s or low 90s for a hot spot, and cool side of 80 or so

I kept her at the regular 87-90 hot spot and 77 to 80 cool side. I never really change the temps at all. I didn't know it was necessary honestly. I hope that isn't what caused the problem...

I doubt it. That's exactly where I keep mine and I have the first clutch of the year in the incubator now, eight good eggs from a large virgin female. She laid them right on the heat.

slugs happen when a female ovulates to soon. So the ovum don't have a chance to fully develope into proper eggs. This can be cause by her being kept to warm or by the enviroment or by her just having something off internally. Infertal eggs are eggs that didn't get the males part.
