Thinking About A Dumerils, Have Questions

Hey guys, its about that time that I start looking for a new animal and im interested in dumerils, but dont know too much about them

I was just wondering: are their required temps are the same as red tails and balls? Is their feeding response as strong as red tails? Are they as active as red tails or more shy like balls?

personal experiences and opinions are welcome!

I keep mine the same as I keep my balls, except I give the dumerils bedding to burrow under.

x2. Mine does great that way.

Their temperaments are similar to most boas. I find that my Dum is a bit more shy than my BCIs, but not overly so. I think it's just part of their nature, being a burrowing species. But she isn't anywhere near as shy as my BPs. She handles well and is curious. They are really nice snakes to have.

Ditto to the top 2, I actually have my dum in the same rack as my BPs.
Same temperature and humidity, just a thicker layer of bedding so she can burrow.
At first she was a really picking eater, but her nickname is the garbage disposal. If my adult Bp won't eat, I give it to my dumerils. I get mine out anybody wants to see a snake. She has an awesome personality and is super curious. Love them.

Here's my big girl, just shed last night and is right at 5'.

I love the pattern on these guys. Are they a heavier bodied boa? what length do they top out at?

from what i have seen they are relative slim, like red tails, and they max at about 5-7 some hit 8/9 but thats rare

They are slimmer than a BP, but heavier bodied than BCI. They are a ground boa while BCI tend to be partially arboreal. They are considered smaller than the average Colombian BCI, however they do have the potential to get pretty large. A female can reach 7-8 feet in length with close to 9ft not impossible. They tend to weigh significantly more than a BCI too thanks to their heavier structure. A male is usually a bit smaller at around 6-7 feet. :gj:

The patterns on these guys are amazing, some of them almost look like stars to me. I have never seen a full grown adult, the largest I have seen was around 4 foot. I'm hoping to see some different boas as full grown adults at repticon LA so I can get a better size reference.

What are you looking for in a new snake?

If you have a BCI, my personal opinion is you will feel more like you have something in between a BCI and a BP.

Again this is just my opinion, mind you I think Dums have one of the slickest looking natural patterns out there.

If I were to add another snake, other than a BCI or BCC, I'd go carpet python or SD retic. They are active, climb and still get decent sized.


"Reptile Experts" AKA,Cody, is a good source for anything retic.

All that said, holding a big, thick Dums while watching TV would be fun too!!

It all depends on what you want and like.

Can't go wrong with something that you fancy!

exactly. carpet pythons are very cool too i will always consider them. I just love the boa feeding response, garbage disposals they are. i would absolutely love a SD retic but the ones ive seen are out of my price range

I am a big fan of Dumerils. I have had my girl for about 2 years. I got her from Bob Clark she is one of my favorite snakes. She is beautiful but the best part about her is her personality very sweet and curious but at the same time doesn't mind chilling watching TV.

They grow extremely slow because there metabolism is very slow. My girl is just now staring to really gain some size. As far as how I keep her she is in the bottom of my rack almost floor level. So her hot spot is the same as the BP's about 89deg but because she is so low in the rack the ambient is around 76-77. She seems to like it a little bit cooler. When I had he higher in the rack she seemed to be on her cool side all of time so I moved her and she seems much more comfortable. However this is what works for me you will read your snake and it will tell you what it wants. As far as feeding response my girl is a monster. Like I said I have had her for almost 2 years and she has never refused a meal.

All in all I think you would love a Dumerils boa they are awesome!

Just curious about all of the comments about red tails being on the slender side and not heavily bodied. I have a few small RTB's so I cant speak of this for what I have personally but I have seen plenty of pics of big fat red tails and one of local stores has a really fat red tail. Thicker than their burms if that says anything. When I saw this thing I was shocked because I had no clue they ever got that big and pictures never quite do justice to size. Are thick rtb's just the exception to the rule then?

Aaron has a gorgeous dum, where is he? I love their pattern and colors.

They are really pretty but can be very fussy feeders. I bought one and ended up giving her away, because I hated the long fasts she would go on. From what I hear, that is pretty common with them.

many people tend to over feed their rtb's allowed them to get that thick. They should be slender than burms, rtb's never reach that thickness in the while its just overfeeding and it can cause problems
