for a hide box on DIY projects i was wondering can i just use a old plastic clear shoe box or will it not be good becase it is clear and the snake won't feel safe thanks for your time ~dan~
-
is this ok to use
ummm. If you could find a dark colored one it would be better bcause it would make the snake feel more inclosed. You can also use a cardboard box......ceral box. Something of that nature.
-
he may not feel as comfy in it since it is see through. generally something you can't see through would be better.
-
how do i post a pic to let you see what it loooks like

this is how they look like they are clear and on the other end i have a passage way so my snake can get in
-
If they can see big looming shapes moving around outside through the side of the hide they are not going to feel very secure - go for something more opaque.
-
i was using a clear zip-lock container like that, but i covered it with substrate, and left the hole for the entrance exposed. he would feel secure and like he was underground. put some plants or something on it around it.. use the enviroment inside the cage to make a hill there and have the hide be under the hill...
-
i was thinking to put like white paper ot newspaper over it is that fine
-
You should do what I do. Go to the nearest dollar store and pick up a nice vase or somthing. Dollar stores rule. Ive also found silk vines at the one by me.... talk about goodlooking cheap deco

i wouldnt think newspaper would hurt. i used that to cover the hide when our snakes had mites, and we kept them on newspaper. just make sure there are no light holes, or tape inside the cage. you would hate to have tape get stuck to your snake. another alternative if yuo are using newspaper as a substrate is to get aquarium plants and hot glue them all around the sides, get some of the shorter grass like ones to cover the top. i use a lot of aquarium plants in our cages hot glued to the floor, it comes out looking real good when substrate is placed in. you can turn almost anything into a hide. dollar stores rock. we have a million out here in s.d.

Alternatively, cover them with colored contact paper. Easy and cheap!

Someone on this forum suggested a long time ago, that they used those um like peatmoss? plant planters. Like the hanging basket kind not a planter. I even went out and got a couple at Lowe's. They hold humidity really well.
-
Or another alternative, go to a garden facility or a place that sells plants and just get a few clay planter bottoms(shallow/low to ground..bp's love them) and just take a hammer and knock out a hole for an entrance. They're cheap(got mine for no more than a dollar each) and effective. :)
-
I think you're talking about Marla, and the plant liners?
Those own for humidity hides.

i think this is the second time now i have said this to you today blink, but amen to that!

Personally, I'm all about clay pots(for larger snakes) and clay pot bases(for smaller snakes)... they're cheap, easy to make (just bang on an edge with a hammer), have a low profile, and are heavy enough to make your ball python feel very secure. Opacity aside, that rubbermaid will be lightweight and big... both area wise and height.

Clay pots or bases are great for regular hides, and the coconut fiber works great for humid or regular hides. There are a lot of great hide options out there. I still like Hanover's igloo that I made him, though I wish I'd glazed the darn thing. :) And I'd like to thank my fans ... ;)

i use a old speaker box just punch out the bottom, and in the holes in the corner i put plants to hide the opening so he can feel secure.
-
i use my lil brother shoe box for the cool side and a exoterra hide on the hot side.
-
-
should be fine, just dont let it get overly wet if you mist a lot. if it does get too wet just replace the paper.
-
if imist ca't i just take it out then mis the cage
-
yup, sounds like a good plan.
-
napoleon dynamite haha i put that on there becase it is cool
-
yeah, i noticed that and wondered if it was on purpose. :P
