Anyone had VPI pet insurance for their snakes before?
Hey everyone, so im looking into some pet insurance for my BPs and the vet im thinking of going to for a checkup only takes VPI pet insurance.

Has anyone dealt with VPI insurance before?

The coverage plan isnt bad at all. It's $16.85 a BP. It doesn't cover routine checkups but it does fully cover any injuries, respiratory issues or illnesses including meds. There's a max coverage cap of $2,000 per incident and $7000 per year. There's also $50 bucks out of pocket per incident.

What are your thoughts/experience on this subject?

I kinda see it as a rip off, I mean just for me, 40 snakes x 16 bucks, then another 50 if something happens? I think I've only been to the vet twice since I owned snakes. It cost me under 100 bucks each time. I think 99% of us would be ahead paying out of pocket.

I can see it if you have one pet snake but even then the odds are still on the insurance company's side they always are.

In just the last 5 years only something like that would have cost me $60655 in insurance while my vet cost in the last 5 years has been $0, and even if a few animals had been sick paying out of pocket would be a lot cheaper.

Sounds like a waste, even for one snake...your best bet is to put your money into a fund for any vet or equipment emergency.

I absolutely agree with you. Insurance is based on a notion of "what if".

However, you can always get insurance for two snakes and then interchange them with other ones. I doubt they ask for photo proof. ;)

I used it for my dogs back in the day and it honestly wasn't worth it. There is so much they won't cover and I rarely paid for itself.

Doesn't seem worth it, a vet visit for an RI is about $150 so I would have to have each snake get an RI twice annually just to break even on insurance premium vs treatment cost. You're better off putting that money into a savings account.

I second the account thing, if you wanted to have a vet fund for yourself I don't see that being a bad idea. Toss 16 bucks a month in and you'll be able to cover an RI in 9.5 months, a lot more if you take the appropriate care. Accidents will always happen, but at least you'll know it's paid for without having to bounce back and forth with an insurance company.

I appreciate the input. I just always thought that RI meds plus injections are very pricey or at least that's what people make them seem to be.

Can someone tell me from experience how much they paid for an RI visit plus meds?

My vet visits are rarely over $80...although I think my vet cuts me a break sometimes, as she loves my snakes and I bring them in if they wheeze slightly lol! But I brought my eldest in for an injury treatment, that was two injections and ran me about $60. When she had a lower GI infection the meds, gear, and exam/tests ran me a little over $80. But that's rare.
