why Ball Pythons?

hi,
I am new to the forum/ thinking about getting a BP, and I was wondering why you guys personally enjoy keeping BPs?

I just want to make sure that a BP would be a good pet for me, and know what kinds of things you guys feel you get back from keeping BPs.

the genetics are what got me hooked. so many possibilities. and they're about as docile and "sweet" as snakes get. :P

Their temperament, and the fact that they have survived centuries with relatively little change in what they are now. I can't have an alligator so I got snakes. I enjoy being around something that are beautiful, and can survive without any issues from not being around humans. It keeps me humble, and at the same time awed.

At first because of my curiosity about snakes and to me they are the "warmblood build" of snakes. (only horse people are going to understand that lol). I like their head shape and thick bodies and I wanted something to chill with me while on the computer. Then after I got my first I saw a white and black ball python and had to know what kind it was, then started the I want to breed those, followed by the ok I want to breed a lot of combos, followed by I check fauna daily because I'm addicted to adding pretty snakes to make more pretty combos...

Want a pet rock? Get a ball python. A pretty pet rock, one which needs a lot of your care (fussing with humidity, mostly) and patience (occasional hunger strike). Perfect for a night owl.

Or...get a colubrid if you'd like an active animal, like a corn, king or hog. They are much more forgiving, too.

I love all of the reptiles I've kept. You just have to do your research to choose accordingly (and good for you on doing that before taking the plunge). Good luck!

Size and color mutations are the main reason.

i always wanted a snake growing. my parents would never let me get one so i always had lizards .. bp was the 1st snake i held when i was young and wanted .. so as i got older i got into them and after realizing all the paint jobs out there to me its amazing how many different colors and pattern changes u can have .. when mixing so much up u never know whats gonna pop out of a egg , i think that's really cool ... and the fact that they don't get so big its easy to keep many of them ..

I love all the different color morphs i started out with 1 normal last year and withing less then a year i now have 9 ball pythons, 1 western hognose, 1 coastal carpet(not a begginer snake),1 columbian rainbow boa,1 hypo bci,1 striped corn snake,4 leopard geckos, and a bearded dragon. Oh and being on the forum i got sucked into tarantulas and now i have a new addiction

BTW if you want an active snake a ball python isnt for you they mainly move around at night. Also they can be very fussy when it comes to feeding i have 1 that has only eaten 3 times in the 4-5 months ive had her but all the rest eat weekly. Other then those 2 things ball pythons are great

Chicks dig 'em...

I was mainly an aquatics guy before moving on to Ball Pythons. Doing cichlids I was pretty much constrained to keeping the genetics as pure as possible. The most play I got was breeding for richer color, size and so forth but, never straying too far from the wild type in any case. The whole idea of being free too alter the paint jobs is what hooked me.

The right chicks dig them. ;)

They're just so laid back and chill. Totally content to just hang out in your lap or their cage, makes no difference to them. Also I think their care is insanely easy. I was a lizard guy but ive made the transition to pythons because they are so much hardier and simpler to care for. The color and pattern mutations are awesome too. And the size is really managable.

I love my bps because they are easier to maintain than my dogs, do not cost as much $$$ as my dogs, do not need as much attention, don't make as much of a mess, and are just generally really cool. Didn't realize that I was actually going to get "addicted" to them though. I really could be one of those people who wind up with 5 or 10 if my husband doesn't control me!

If you manage to kill a BP, you have a gift…and with their pet rock temperament, they are a great way to break unaccepting parents or others into the hobby.

They are large enough to be cool, but not large enough to be dangerous...They come in about 9,368 colors...They will watch TV with you...They don't eat you out of house and home...They live in a rack...All the cool kids have one.

I love the temperament...with two small children running about, that was important and since I dance with mine, I needed a snake that was big enough to be impressive, but not so big it would weigh me down lol!
