Snake Personalities...pretty different..

Hey,

Figured i'd make a post of this because it is both funny and annoying..

We have two Ball Pythons, one male and one female, both aprox the same age and length but the male is the smaller (girth wise, he was thin when we got him but he is getting some weight on him) anyways.

Our Spider ball...super friendly, loves coming out and head rubs and roaming around..and every time we bring food into the room (noodles, pizza, grilled cheese, anything) she pokes her head out of her hides and watches.

Our Pastel, when inside his terrarium, shy, jumpy, doesnt like being bothered (he hisses every once in a while when we open up his cage and go near him) but never strikes. gets startled easy, but after 5-10 mins of being out and about with us, warms right up. Doesn't mind head rubs, will crawl around and just chill. which is completely different from him in his cage. Another odd thing, he doesnt use his cool hide often...He would rather snuggle in behind a fake tree branch behind his side and rest his head on the tree or his hide. (been about 2 months since we have had him so he is well settled into his tank, so hoping over time he mellows out a bit more.)


It's crazy what kind of personalities they have, because they all seem to be pretty different which is amusing.. what kind of personalities does your reptiles have folks?

I used to have a Pastel Lesser that was possessed by the spirit of Satan himself... He's the only Ball Python I've ever met that goes against my signature line ;)

dam slim I was telling a friend today I have a pastel girl I got she was 2 years old when I got her and had her for almost a year and she hates me .. she still tries to stike at me everyday even thru her tub when im in the snake room .. from day one when I opened the box its been on lol

All our ball pythons vary. Some are not head shy and some will arc their back like a cat and hiss when touched. Our yellowbelly female has been a little booger since we got her and always struck at us. She hasent struck in awhile but isnt the friendliest of my snakes. Our brazilians and carpet are definitely our chillest snakes.

All but two of mine are pet rocks. Of those two, one must be part viper; if she's not in her hide when you slide her tub out of the rack, she comes out striking. The other is a little love bug; when you slide open his tub he comes out and tries to climb up your arm, chest, hair, etc.

I have a 10 month old male that likes to look at ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. If someone enters the room, he pokes his head out of a hide and needs to look and see who it is and he will turn his head in any direction that they go in. He does this to humans as well as any animal. He's the most curious little snake~ He also loves to be held. When I pick him up he wraps himself on me and finds a comfy spot (my arm, shoulder, neck, lap, ect) where he chills - but when try to put him back in his cage, he tightens up his body on my arm as if to say "no daddy! not yet!".

Its always interesting to hear about other reptiles personalities. :)

My BP is the mellowest snake ever. He hides all day long, and then comes out to roam around his tank in the early mornings. If I happen to take him out of his tank, he'll wait for me to get settled, then he'll start to do his thing. Whether it's to get to the ground to start exploring or climbing all over my glasses and headset when I'm at my computer. Sometimes he'll just wrap around my neck and just chill there until its time for me to go to sleep. He's never hissed or made any noises at all. And the last time he ate (This was a while ago) he didn't even bother striking, he just sort of slid around the rat and then coiled it to eat it.

My little guy, Severus is very funny. I only got him about a month ago but I have learned pretty quickly that he is not too fond of my boyfriend (taylor). He cowers from him and when he gets really scared I cup my hands so he can hide his head. In about a few minutes or so he feels brave again and pokes his head out. The other night too Sev was just staring at Taylor and he almost looked like he wanted to strike at him! I had to take Sev away from him. Taylor was a bit freaked to say the least.
He is a very funny little guy. I just adore him! :)

The part about the rat made me laugh!

I have 6 who are all either shy or dont care whats going on but not aggressive ones yet. Picked up an albino Nicaraguan and got my first constrictor bite and a open mouth display. Strangely enough shes the most fun :D

The different personalities are interesting.

I see that a lot of work has been done on BP color variations.

Is it possible to breed for personality/behavior/intelligence? Has anyone tried?

All of mine are pretty chill, only my dinner is head shy, my pastel used to be. And all our mellow in the cage for the most part except my spider, who is the opposite of all other ball pythons, everytine I turn on the light she comes out of her hide and cruises around investigating. I know it's just the light, cuz when there's nothing but natural light in she doesn't care.

Eissa is pretty relaxed. He has his moments of being jumpy but that's normal. He loves to watch tv or any video. It's funny because if I shut it off he will go back to his hide until I turn it on. When I take him out he's curious and cruises around but his go to spot is on my shoulder. He's super mellow and I'm thankful for such a patient snake that's so forgiving.

Kismet, my eldest normal, is my shy girl...she's fine on me, but gets pretty stressed with others lol. She's gradually getting better, I chalk a lot of it up to the fact that she had a lot of changes since I rescued her last May. She also likes to randomly hiss...kind of funny. No real reason, just let's out an occasional hiss and goes about her business.

Persephone, my reduced pattern normal, is a baby. BEGS to come out when I'm in the room...and once she's out, she's nuzzling my lips and snuggling up with me. And good luck putting her back lol.

My newest girl, Andromeda, is a sweetheart, but has a little feisty streak, I think (as she struck at me when I was topping off her water after a fantastic hissing display). :)

My baby BP Bruce is extremely calm. He's a lazy bum when he is in his cage, sleeps under the hide on the warm side of the cage most of the time. But he doesn't have a problem when I open it up and take him out of his hide, it's almost like his attitude is "oh, what's up man? Nice, I get to go explore!" :P.

I am convinced that there is nothing I could do to make him bite me, he is just that chill, totally comfortable with me.

My favorite is when I'm laying down watching TV with him and he decides he wants to go exploring, I find hit hilarious when he tries to squeeze his head in different crevices (between my arm and body, between my fingers, under my back or leg). Or when he yawns lol, it gets me every time. He's really just a goof ball. I couldn't have asked for a better personality in my BP.

Boots is a puppy. Not even head shy and is always going to be my main go-to ambassador snake. She's even confident enough to sleep outside her hides.

Julius is her sheer opposite- she might be the only aggressive defensive BP around. She's hissed, intentionally crapped and smeared it on me, musked, bit and tail wagged numerous times. Which is one reason I like her lots- if I ever want a NatGeo snake catcher experience, it's only across the room.
That being said, she sometime calms down when she's been out for a while. I dare not put my hand in front of her face though.

The ball python is lazy in his enclosure, but inquisitive and active outside of it. He spends most of his time periscoping. lol I remember one time I had him out Skyping with a friend and he kept booping me on the nose or resting his head on the bridge of my nose so that one eye was staring right at one of my eyes. This is how he usually says hello, but it's usually something he does once or twice when I first bring him out. It's almost like he was jealous. XD He's the only snake to have reared up at me, and hissed. Neither of my other two have gotten defensive towards me (although Draco isn't much of a fan of the camera in HIS tank lol and he used to be frightened of the mice), although the boa has become a bit twitchy like what I've seen in retics when getting him out.

The garter is inquisitive and silly, sometimes the smallest movement sends him flying through the air and it's hilarious to watch his body move back and forth from the force of his jump. XD Sometimes he'll follow my finger, and he'll watch people as they move around, but if nothing interesting is going on he usually stays hidden. He's probably got the strongest feeding response of my trio, though. lol He'll come from the opposite end to chase it down, and does laps around his tank as I thaw out his food.

The boa is really chill, and will just relax after awhile. Outside, he does a lot of exploring, though he rarely periscopes. Luckily, his feeding response doesn't kick in unless he physically sees the food, in which case he'll rip them right out of the tongs and hitting anything full-force on the way down. He's also taken to climbing on top of my head, a habit he only recently picked up, around the time he hit 5ft. I don't know why he couldn't do this when he was a baby. lol His weirdest habit is probably his tendency to stare at me while he does his business...I hear a "pffffft" and look over and he has his head lifted up over the lip of the enclosure (a good 6 inches) staring dead at me. o.o

Their personalities are something that always seem to surprise people. My collection numbers close to 40 and all of my snakes are very, very different. And somehow they always seem to embody their names well. Something that always comes back to bite me (:rofl:) when I pick a cool, edgy name. Our two nastiest balls are Drusilla (named for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer villain) and Maduro (a dark smoldering cigar. Trust me, he's got attitude to burn!)
