ok no walmart around here at all man! my mom's heating pad has an auto off switch and i already have a reptile heating pad stuck under that tank anyway i think i am gonna leave it. the thermometer at k mart cost 30$ and on top of all this i can't go anywhere to get anything until they call about the thermometer at a local petstore who is getting a shipment of em sometime this week or next week. man i am angry and frustrated. my mom won't drive me anywhere until they call about the shipment and she said when they are in that is the only time she is driving me anywhere. for all i know that can be in another 2 weeks. and the thermometer isn't even on the walmart site so i can't get it off the internet. so basically i am screwed!    :x :bomb:

you might try ordering some of that stuff online. the s&h might get you on some items, but others might work out

:( Poor Brian. I feel for ya man.

Where do you live? I still can't believe there's no Walmarts near you. It's like the biggest retail store I know, lol. We don't have one in our small town, but there is one in a town over. I just drive there when I need to go there. It's like a 15 minute drive, but its worth it. So there might not be one in your general area, but I'm sure there's one somewhere near you..maybe a short drive from you. I dunno. :( Only thing else I can figure is if you have a credit card or have ways of borrowing one, you can get the stuff you need for dirt cheap online. Of course there's shipping charges too, but I'd think you could still get it cheaper than in stores. Seems buying things online is usually cheaper.

Oh, and just for a heads up. If you're planning on getting thermometers from a petshop, they're probably analog. Those are usually wayyy off. Of course, if you don't have anything measuring temps right now, I guess analog stick ons are better than nothing. But yeah, they're usually off on the temps. That's why a lot of us are so adament in using digital thermometers.

I no it sucks, but I guess you'll learn for next time. It pays to research as much as possible before you get into snakes, or any new pet for that matter. Before I bought mine, I researched on a load of sites, mainly this one, for atleast 3 months, and bought all I needed ahead of time, so I'd be able to just get the snake and chill. :)

Wow, congrats on your mom being cool with herps. My mother is DEATHLY afraid of snakes, she refuses to come into my apartment unless the cages are locked and have big books on top of them. My dad's pretty cool with them so long as he's not asked to pick them up; he's more a lizard and croc guy anyway. :D
I waited almost 10 years to get my first snake, because my living situation wasn't stable enough to have one (I was moving around the world for school, and couldn't take the snakes on the plane with me). You're lucky that your mom is so supportive. :)
Is there a bus system you can take? I don't drive, I rely on buses and bikes, and it's not so hard if there's some kind of public transport around.

Actually Cody, when I lived in Brooklyn ... I never heard of Walmart ... we had Kmarts ... but no Walmarts near us.

As like UberAlice, I wasn't allowed to keep any sort of herps at all when living with my parents.

In New York, I rarely took the car anywhere ... the bus and subway were VERY close by, and in New York you can take the bus/trains all around the city ... oh how much I miss that. Personally I'm not a car/motorcycle person.

In Florida, theres no subways ... well only from West Palm to Miami.
I've seen bus stops, just haven't seen many buses =/ lol

Mist, saran wrap, turn off the overhead light.
  • 08-23-2004, 06:09 PM
    normballpython2
ok i got saran wrap but how will he have light in the day time?
  • 08-23-2004, 06:18 PM
    UberAlice
Clear wrap should allow some of the light to shine through; Balls are nocturnal, so they don't really need light in the daytime.

    normballpython2
did saran wrap and still 40% matbe a cup of wet paper towels on the hot side would do it?
  • 08-23-2004, 06:33 PM
    UberAlice
It'll take a little bit to rise; the wrap only holds moisture in. Did you mist before you put the wrap on? Misting will bring the humidity up pretty quickly.

I use a squirty bottle my roomate and I got for $.75 from the local drug store. Worse comes to worst, you can always just use a squirt gun or something.

    nice new set up

    https://ball-pythons.net/modules/cop...l_Aug23045.JPG

with a nice new digital thermometer, i also added a red light that gives off a little more heat than the other light and it is over the ater prettty much raising the humidity as we speak.

ok humidity is 67% and the hot side is 88.6 degrees and the cool side is 75.6 degrees so am i finally set?

Is the humidity at 67 cause you misted?
  • 08-23-2004, 11:12 PM
    mlededee
you can make it a bit warmer in there if you want. for nighttime temps those are good, but during the day i like to keep the cool side close to 80 and the warm side right around 90. it's looking much better though. i'm glad you are taking the time to get everything just right for your little guy :D

You know if the humidity is always high, and its wet in the enclosure your little snakey can get belly rot.

Also, you can put the damp paper towel on top of the mesh top, instead of the inside ... you get basically the same effect.

ok so 67% is bad? man i get differnt info every time
  • 08-23-2004, 11:19 PM
    normballpython2
oh yeah i covered the top with saran wrap
  • 08-23-2004, 11:31 PM
    mlededee
67% isn't bad, but it is on the high side. i would try not using the paper towels for now. if the humidity goes back below 50% then either mist or make the humid hide. just covering the top can make a big difference.
  • 08-23-2004, 11:43 PM
    normballpython2
ok i did cover the top and the paper towel so i will take it out but if it goes down again then i will make the diy humid hide sometime this week

67% Isn't horrible, but try getting your humidity high without getting the enclosure actually "wet"
I never mist unless, my snake is in shed ... my humidity is in the mid-50s.

Covering the top, make sure you have a good sized water bowel. Come back an hour or so and see if your humidity has changed with the top covered. Humidity doesn't automatically change as soon as you cover time. Give it a bit of time.

If you have too difficult a time maintaining a good humidity level, chances are that your ambient humidity is affecting it and that your easiest way to fix it is going to be to switch to plastic housing. 67% is a little high but not bad, but what is bad is having wet substrate, which can lead to belly rot.
  • 08-24-2004, 09:04 AM
    normballpython2
ok the humidity is 52% since i took the paper towel out.
  • 08-24-2004, 09:25 AM
    normballpython2
ok now it is back to 60% man
  • 08-24-2004, 09:27 AM
    mlededee
that sounds good. i'd leave it there until the snake goes into shed. then you will want to raise it to 70-80%. you can achieve that with the humid hide or putting a wet towel over the screen top (just 2 of the many ways).

EDIT: i use a glass tank like you do, and because of that you will find that the humdity does fluxuate. as long as it doesn't go below 45-50% or above 70% for an extended period of time--more than a day--then you should be fine. it is hard to keep things at perfect constant level with glass aquariums.

well the humidity must of reallly loosened him up because he left me a b-day present this morning lol

well that could have had something to do with it. sometimes after a soak they will leave you a little something, so i guess the humidity increase could have had the same effect. :)

ok the temp is now 93.4 on the hoot side and 82.6 on the cool side and the humidity is 58%
  • 08-24-2004, 10:52 AM
    mlededee
be careful that the temp on the hot side doesn't go over 94-95. the cool side and humidity are good.
