Its hard to get an angle that accurately shows how huge this thing is.

is it ok to hold preggers upside down by their tail like that?
-
I wouldn't hold her like that too often, it puts pressure on the tummy and can have negative effects sometimes.
But yah, she probably popped last night (depending on when this was posted, lol) or this morning!
-
I have a couple that can barely walk due to their size.

Re: this mama is about to pop, yo
Poor momma. Why would you hang her by her tail?
-
Just picked her up quickly for a picture, didn't realize that could harm her :( Thanks rashputin.
I assumed I wasn't supposed to touch her tummy while she was pregnant and went for the tail.
She's dropping her kits right now. first one down, god knows how many to go.
-
Theres over ten at this point, she's very dilligently cleaning them.

Nah, mice pop in no time. Takes maybe 15 minutes.
-
Re: this mama is about to pop, yo
Lots of babies I see in your near future! Gratz!
-
Mamma said pop you out!!! Mamma said scream and shout!!!
Sorry, just had to do it :D
-
Lol slim. I have a story to tell you about a dude I saw at a party with a class A jacket on pretending to be a vet- I'll hit you up via pm lol
Im about to count the babies, I'll be back once I entice her away with something nourishing.

Oh man is she cute. Are those cotton balls? I have no idea if they're safe for pinkies or not. But keep an eye on their legs and tails, cause some things have strands of fibers that can get tied around their limbs and hurt them.

Looks soft though

I've heard good things about cotton balls esp for mice and hamsters. I havn't had an issue with them yet, they get packed down and dont have many filimer hairs. Ill keep an eye out.
-
Cotton is very dangerous for mice.
-
Raw cotton is not dangerous. It's the processed material that can be dangerous because of the long fibers. Artificial materials like 'cotton badding' can be the same way.
I give my mice raw cotton all the time, and they make nests out of it in the wild, too.

I didn't know that :O
Where do you buy raw cotton?
-
I'm... not really sure any more. I used to get it from pet stores in a little bag. It's off-white/brown ish, and has little pieces of stems and seed casings still in the cotton. I think it's sold for rodents, as well as being sold for small birds to make nests out of. It's probably easy to find online somewhere, I might actually go look for some now, I'm all out of nesting materials!

Well here you go, 1 lb of hand picked raw cotton for $15.50 shipped: http://www.cottonman.com/lint%20seed%20cotton.htm

ps, mama ate all the babies and then got fed to a snake out of frustration.

I never count the first or second litters for many reasons including that.....

Gut loading :gj: Putting on my fire proof suit now
-
I never breed mice, someone gave me a pregnant mother so I figured I'd see the litter through.
Ended up just giving her to a friend who has mice eaters. I assume she's been fooded by now or something.
-
If you ever do decide to breed mice, that is the proper way to deal with cannibalism…swift and brutal. It is a genetic trait that can really screw with your production. I've had it almost stop production across 200 mice due to ONE litter of eaters that slipped through.
sorry that happened to you though…I hope it doesn't sour you to mice lol

So how do you go about finding or making good mamas?

I am curious about this as well MS.
mice are hard dude, everyone I know who breeds rats tend to pull hair out over mice.
-
Buy from good stock or you're taking a chance every time. You're still taking a chance with good stock, but the chance it much lower if the mice have been selectively bred over many generations for good qualities, and not just bred at random for more production.

I got lucky. My friend (who is currently getting his MD and Ph.D in Human Medicine and Biomechanical Engineering) was coming back from an internship working for the National Institutes of Environmental Health and Safety in North Carolina when he thought to himself: "California needs a diverse strain of mice". So, he purchased mice from a number of states on his trip back, and bred them over the course of 6 months to select away the bad mice. Every successive generation, the bad specimens were removed at the first sign of cannibalism, leaving the friendly, healthy mice to breed. When I purchased the colony from him, I got a whole colony of friendly mice.
-
You must have godlike patience to be a pro mouse breeder for shows and stuff.
-
Re: this mama is about to pop, yo
Sometimes. :halohorn:
But I don't think it's anything like the patience you guys have for waiting -years- breeding snakes, to reach one goal. Mice at least breed fast enough that I can reach my goals in like 6 months (at least on a basic genetic basis). Body type might take years to improve though.
-
rash, i dont breed snakes. I strictly breed rats as pets. I just like this forum a lot better than touchy afrma people.
-
The funny thing is, AFRMA people aren't that touchy. The west coast is way more chill about mice and rats (rat people are always a bit touchy though) the east coast is really what's given rat breeders and mouse breeders a bad name.
-
Re: this mama is about to pop, yo
I agree, afrma isn't that bad. They keep an open mind. Some of the afrma board also not only support, but encourage culling (contrary to what much of the rest of the hobby believes). Afrma doesn't take a stance one way or the other when it comes to snakes (individuals might, but not the organization as a whole).I haven't been involved in shows for a very long time, but I did used to show with afrma.
-
I more meant the kind of people attracted to rat shows and such, not afrma as an actual specific organization
-
I also made the mistake of going on tumbler for rats...
..I am now scared of rat enthusiasts.
