    Large bump on Dum's nose...
So I was cleaning and when I pulled out my Dum I noticed a large lump on her nose.
I check on them every other day, but I have been working a lot lately so haven't taken her out of the tub for about 2 weeks until she needed cleaning. Temps are good, though the humidity is probably a bit high. There is no wheezing, no rubbing or scratches...
Think I should wait it out a bit? Or vet visit ASAP? I'd appreciate your feed back. I've had her for a little over 2 years and this is the first issue I've run into.

I would go to a vet ASAP. It could be a abcess or infection that can travel to the brain or blood stream without proper antibiotics.

Definitely looks like an abscess, is the lump firm or filled with fluid? You should give your vet a call and get her in within the next week. Are you sure it hasn't been rubbing or pushing on something?
Abscesses can form from just a small foreign body getting lodged in the body and causing an infection. The body is actually trying to isolate the infection and causes the mass with fluid and puss.

Let us know how everything turns out!

My guess, (and only a guess) is rubbing? But a vet visit would be the best, safest bet. What does it look like inside her mouth?

She looks and is acting totally normal besides the bump. I guess rubbing is a possibility but she doesn't move much so it would surprise me (meaning I have not noticed any changes in behavior lately). It appears to be hard, and she doesn't react when I touch it. We have a great exotic vet in the DC area, I'll be giving her a call today. I'll keep you posted!
    Thanks!

Good deal. I agree with the vet being the safest decision. Hopefully it will turn out to be something minor. :gj:

What was the issue here? My hog island had something similar, we came to the conclusion it was trauma from striking and hitting something hard. It turned out to be bacteria under the skin and had to be scraped clean and antibiotics injected at the site until it closed up.

Well the bump went down in size by half the next day so we decided to wait it out. It continued to lessen in size everyday, and she has continued to act normal. It was gone completely within a few days. It remains a mystery but she appears to be doing fine. We are still checking her every day to be sure. If anything changes we will take her to the vet.

What vet do you use? We've been to both SEAVS and Blue Ridge, though if there's another in northern VA it's good know.

One of our BP's had a puffy face like that a few weeks ago. We made the vet appointment, but the following morning he was completely back to normal, and two days later he shed. No swollen head, bumps, or anything weird since.

I swear these critters will turn me completely gray within the next year...

Haha I know what you mean. One minute I think she looks like quasimodo the next its as if it never happened. We normally use Stahl Exotic Vet. I haven't taken a snake there yet but we took our lizard there for some major surgery. They were great, worked with us on everything.

I would say either pushing or swing and a miss with prey and hit the tub. i've seen it many times with boas but not normally dums. but if it doesnt go down like you are saying it is then a vet trip is in order.

I'm really glad to know your snake is ok. :O <-This was my face when I saw the first pic. You know I think I got really lucky. I had a very agro corn snake, always striking at the glass of her tank whenever she saw me, and she never took damage from it. She didn't hold back either, she slammed that glass full force.

She is a pretty aggressive eater (really the only time she is all that active). She is not a graceful eater though so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a swing and a miss. We watch everyone eat, but its not really something you note at the time. She seems to be doing just fine, but as I said we are keeping an eye on her.

Re: Large bump on Dum's nose...
(Update) we fed her last Wednesday and the next day the bump had swollen back up again. We immediately made a vet appointment, the vet said it looked like she had rubbed the top of her nose until it became irritated and swelled. She cleaned it, apparently it was a mixture of abscess and liquid from the swelling. She said it wasn't abnormal that it swelled originally then went away. We now have 2 injections to give her every three days and a cream until it heals. Follow up in 3 1/2 weeks.
Here she is (they said her scales should grow back):

So I don't think anyone is following this anymore but I wanted to post an update anyway. My girl is healing quite well, but we still have a vet appointment next week to check on her progress. She has been a doll every time we have to give her shots, hasn't even tried to tag us once. Here she is now:

I'm glad she's doing well. Stories like yours show that something seemingly mundane could end up being a bigger problem than you think. It also makes me nervous because I haven't had to take any of my snakes to the vet yet... and we don't have a good exotic vet anywhere near our town.

    Good luck with her healing!
