LED setup in a AP-T12
Since I bought my Animal Plastics T12 used, I didn't have a choice of adding any lights to it so when I went to Lowes for foil tape, I decided to splurge and get a LED accent lighting system to light my split T12.
The unit is a little bit expensive ($50 bucks), but I think it's worth it. It comes with 4 9" lightbars which connects to a 6 port hub (with an option to connect two more lightbars) which is then connected to a controller from which you can change the color of the LEDs. The only bad thing is that you can't change the lighbars individually. Since one power supply controls all 4 lightbars, you can just plug in one timer to control all of them.
The LEDs don't produce any heat at all. I know a couple of you have been looking for something like this so I decided to share. If you guys have any questions about it, please ask. Also, what do you think?
Here are some photos:

that's cool .. im gonna be getting a boa soon and it will be going in a tank like that .. I think im gonna steal that led idea

Looks good. Did you have AP to cut out a hole for the power cord? If so, how did you fill it to prevent your snake from escaping?
I have four T8 cages and I love them. I bought the light fixture through AP and I kind of wish I didn't. I like the idea of using LED - saves electricity and I think they are brighter/looks better than fluorescent.

What I ended up doing was taking the top part of the PVC terrarium off and made my own U shaped hole. I used a drill to make two holes and then used a knife to straighten it out. It's not very pretty but no one will see it and that way there's not a big hole on top of the terrarium.
These lights are definitely bright. Since snakes don't see the color red, you can switch the color to enjoy night watching.

Thanks! I appreciate it. I feel like the LED lights add that fancy factor to the terrarium. Lol.

awesome :)
thats exactly why i like LEDs: they are small, and they dont produce any heat and are extremely energy efficient.
another thing that hasnt been mentioned: its extremely rare for a LED to break. i mean, if you have some 30 year old device that has LEDs in it, and its still working, chances are that every single LED in it is also still working. light bulbs and fluorescents break and need to be replaced.

Similarly, I used a kit like this when I set up my T8 last month.
http://amzn.com/B006JUW77Y
It's really low profile, and produces LOTS of light. It's also operated by remote, so I can use a red light as a night light, and turn it off once I'm snug in my bed.
-
I have been thinking about the same kit since I saw it while looking for lighting for a custom enclosure I am building. I got the 24 inch white led bar that in my lowes is in the same section for daytime use. I do not have a night light yet and was thinking about the accent lighting system or the arcadia moonlight LED....

Personally, it's a good kit. The reason I like the accent kit, is you can use it for both day and night lighting.

Re: LED setup in a AP-T12
It doesn't have it's own timer function built in correct? I would have to change it from day to night myself or is there anyway to have the kit do it by itself?

No, unfortunately it doesn't. You have to switch the color manually on the controller.

Re: LED setup in a AP-T12
Thanks for the info. So between this & the Acadia moonlight led, if you know about that, which do you think is or would be better for use as night time lighting?

No problem at all. I checked out the arcadia moonlight LEDs (I never heard of it before) and I think you'll get a bigger bang for you buck with the accent LED lights just because you get 4 individual lamps. Plus, I like the fact that the accent lights have like 14 different modes of colors including some dimming ones.
However, I don't know how waterproof the accent lights are. I've been misting a decent amount since one of my BPs is on the verge of shedding and so far, so good.
These are all the color setting available:

Here is a link if it works( still learning tapatalk ) of my new enclosure. I am leaning towards the accent because I can use the other light bars in other sections. I have a day\ night timer to setup the lights. The 24" led bar from Lowe's is on in the new picture.

That's a bada$$ enclosure! Good job!
If you're going to go with the accent lighting, two of the light bars would light it pretty nicely . Then you can use the other two for something else.

Np. I think you're on the right track. Is it just going to be one terrarium with two shelves?

I don't know if they're waterproof, but half of my Animal Plastic T12 is at 62% humidity and so far the LEDs are working just fine.
They look like well closed so I don't think the moisture is going in the LEDs but only time will tell.

Most LEDs should be fairly water resistant. The ones I posted earlier are waterproof.
Here's they are installed in my cage. They cast a blue light, but it's not as bad as this picture suggests.

Actually, here's a wide shot that shows the color spread a bit more accurately.

And it has a pretty big set of options to choose from.

Yeah. The power cord fits through the vent in that corner, and it's one continuous strip around the perimeter.

Yea until I can convince the wife to allow for more snakes. Lol My plans that I drew out when designing this, I had a 4th self above the enclosure. I still technically have a 4th but it's just not framed its the top of the enclosure.
I got the led accent kit this morning and I also got 2 of the the 15 inch extra light bars to play with.

Re: LED setup in a AP-T12
Hey did you have any trouble getting the accent kit to turn on with the setting if it is plugged into a controllable power outlet? Mine does not want to do it but I was trying to do do so with the switch on a power strip so I don't know if that may be the reason it will not. That has me worried that it may not work on a timer.

I just purchased a T-8 for my Retic boy (waiting on it to be shipped now), and I might have to look into getting lights like that for the enclosure. Those LED lights look awesome!

I just checked it out, and it came out pretty awesome with the LED lights. How do you like them now that you have them up and running?
You should post a photo on here as well just for reference sake. I take it you figured out why it didnt turn on?

Re: LED setup in a AP-T12
Yea, I recently ran into the same issue when I was trying to use the herpstat 4 to control the lights. The problem is, the herp 4 can turn off the power to the lights, but can't turn it back on. I still haven't quite figured out how to have the herp 4 turn it on.
So I think it's going to be the same issue with the timer. It can cut the power but not turn it back on because you have to press the button on the controller for the light to come on.

Re: LED setup in a AP-T12
It should work since it still functions like an electrical outlet controlled by a wall switch. I am going to call customer support about it maybe tomorrow if I get a chance.

Re: LED setup in a AP-T12
I called and someone was there@ 8pm eastern! The system does not like the switch on surge protector. I have a switch controlled outlet andI tested it on that it worked. I the got my timer and tested and it worked. It has to be a" real" switch to function.
Testing with a timer and Huston. We have lift-off!

Also in keeping with the topic, the kits stays on whatever color or setting that it is set to when allowing something such as a timer or switch to control on/off. There is no default that it goes to every time it comes on.

Re: LED setup in a AP-T12
Somebody mentioned the Arcadia LED. I have the Arcadia Moonlight. Its 100% water proof and can be put in water. It's about $21 US. They are small and kick out a lot of light. Supposedly the light does not bother snakes.
I have it in my boa's Pro-Line cage.
I have the shutter on the camera open pretty wide so you are seeing a lot more light than what you'd see if you walked in the room.
http://i772.photobucket.com/albums/y...a/DSC00197.jpg
I have a regular LED white strip for display and cleaning as well. When both are turned on it looks nice. Again, wide shutter here.
http://i772.photobucket.com/albums/y...a/DSC00734.jpg
This is a little more natural.
http://i772.photobucket.com/albums/y...a/DSC00756.jpg
The Arcadia does not have the 4 settings though. You can buy another infrared one for another $21.
I just need a moonlight, but I like those other colors I must say.
Great thread! Anything to make our cages fun and enjoyable to look at is worth a post.
Thanks for sharing your LED setup.

Did you talk about in another post with pics? That's were I found out about it. However I ended up going with the accent kit because I did not have to order and wait for it to show up. The arcadia looks cool and i think I might get it if I ever build another enclosure. The accent kit worked really well for my book cass enclosure due to its size. It's blue color is like a really blue moon color lol.

I think I did make a post about it a while back. I'm on a couple of different boards so I'm not sure if here or there but you are correct.
I'm really digging your lights. I especially like the green setting.
I don't have a big collection, my son has a royal and I have a BC, so we like making the enclosures enjoyable to look at for our pleasure and for visitors. Even if the visitors are not fans of snakes, it's fun to watch friends suddenly get interested when they see the cages.
I'm sure your cage gets a few comments with the interesting lighting.
Personally, I like to go into the room where the snakes are and relax and just stare at the cages. It beats TV and when the snakes are on the move, it's really cool.
I like this thread and I'm glad I caught it even if I'm a bit late to the party.
It's great to see other people's cages.

Re: LED setup in a AP-T12
I had seen the accent kit when I was looking for the light that I wanted to be my day light and went with a led light bar.
Misha deserves all the credit for talking the step to buy the kit then making this thread about it cuz that helped me make up my mind in choosing.
I literally set the new enclosure this weekend so I am now waiting for the comments from friends that get to see it in person. If you want to mess with people the kit has a setting that responds to sound. It changes colors when noise is made.

I'm glad you actually like it. I'd feel a kind of bad if you spent $50 bucks and didn't like it. Lol.
The noise/color change feature is pretty awesome! Just don't know how healthy it is for the snakes. My girlfriend keeps telling me that I'm going to give my snakes a seizure. I think I tried the noise feature once or twice during the day just for kicks.

Well if it would have not turned out, I could have returned it to Lowe's for a refund as long as nothing was broke. So that worked out too.
I am now curious to find out how waterproof the kit is because I would love to add a kit to my fish aquarium. I imagine that it is not though.

Geek& destroy, the led kit that you have, did it say on the box or somewhere that it is waterproof and how well do you think it would work in a 120 gal fish aquarium if it is waterproof?
