Baby blood wont eat - very worried!
Hey guys so about 3 weeks back i picked up a red blood python from an expo in new york. She is about 4 months old and weighing 150 grams. I have offered appropriate sized rats and mice and she wont eat. I read that her tub might be too big so i moved her to a smaller tub with no luck. She isnt deathly skinny, but her spine is more noticeable than it should be. I can really get young rats (waned, pups) in my area and online are about $60 when i only need a few. Any suggestions?! Any help is appreciated i just want my new baby to eat, thanks

What are the temps and how are you reading them? Substrate you have her on? Live or f/t and how are you offering and how often?

A photo of exactly how you have her set up would help a lot in giving you helpful advice. A lot of times, it can be a simple fix pertaining to husbandry that will get them going feeding when they're that young.

Her warm side stays around 88 and her cool side is like 75 (it's cold here) I read them with a temp gun. I have paper towels on her warm side and aspen on her cool side. I have offered both f/t and live every 5-7 days

First observation.....she has ALOT of open space in there. Take some newspaper and crumple it up and fill all the 'open' space. Giver her a few days undisturbed, then try leaving a pup in there with her in front of her hide....These guys like to feel secure. At that age, if they feel insecure, they often will not feed.

We house hatchlings in shoe box Tupperware containers if that gives you an idea....

They don't burrow per se', but they seem to like to be 'hidden' if that makes sense. In the wild they would bog down in the wet rice patties and palm plantations.

88 is too hot and 75 is too cool.. If your thermostatically controlled see if you can't make the entire tub 82/83 degrees.. The hide looks a wee bit big to provide a snug fit.. Hides are easy to make out of any spent food containers such a parkay tubs and the likes of.. Just cut a hole in the side and your good to go.. This will also allow you to provide a wet spot or more humid micro habitat.. Not to mention once they outgrow them you can throw them away..
