:? Okay all you snake nuts...
I have been doing a LOT of studying about snake biology the last couple of years and I have pondered what kind of snake I would want to kill me if I had to die by snake bite. Basically, it appears that snake venom falls into two main categories - neurotoxic and hemotoxic as I am sure all of you must know. In my opinion I think I would much rather die by a bite from an elapid snake - perhaps a cobra would be the most humane way to go. The venom from elapids just shuts down your nervous system and your heart/lungs just cease to function. On the other hand the hemotoxic venom from a viperidae snake really does some nasty damage to you before you die from it - extreme pain, bleeding and even if you survive you will probably have to have a limb amputated.

Yessir....that hemotoxic venom sounds nasty...I have seen some photos of just what happens after a bite from a rattlesnake and it is truly horrible.I think I would surely pick a nice elapid to check out with...maybe an Egyptian Cobra....

What kind of snake would you want to die by....????
Definitely  man! Dont know if i would want to be killed by a snake, i definitely dont think i'll ever own one capable of killing me. But if i had to choose ... i'd have to say something native to the US .. Timber Rattler or something like that.

I guess if I had to, I'd want to die via a Sea Snake. Why? Well, if I was bitten by a sea snake then I would most likely be in Australia. And Ive allways wanted to go to Australia.

I like Carl's reasoning. I've never wanted to die by snakebite nor am I interested in keeping hots, but if I had to go that way, I'd rather it be by something like an Indian python rather than an eastern diamondback because at least it means I got to do some cool traveling first.

I would not want to be killed by any snake. It seems like a horrible way to die. Depending on the snake a venemous species could bite me and have me die a slow painful death while watching the bite area become necrotic and start to die. If a constrictor crossed paths with me that would be bad because it would have to be a huge snake i dont know if i would like to be squeezed to death suffocation is a very bad way to go too. I shiver at the thought.

Actually gozetec I've read up on constrictors and appearantly prey items end up dieing of ciculatory failure before they die of a lack of oxygen. Basically they squeeze so hard that your body can't move blood around anymore, and I'm guessing your brain would be the first organ to go if blood suddenly just stopped flowing through it. Anyone else come across any more info on this?

Hmmm if I'm gonna die by one might as well be eaten by one - big 'ole AfRock for me.

yes, i have heard that too

it was on some show about snakes, i cant remember the name, and it was talking about how a huge constrictor(i think they were talking about condas) that the snake could break bones from the pressure, and unless its only around your neck, then you will most likely die from not enough blood moving

oh, and i wouldnt mind dieing from a snake, the only thing is, if people knew how i died, itd just make people not like our hobby even more than they already do

but, i would either want to die from a burm/retic/afrock

or....death by a black mamba....i just wanna meet one up close and personal ;) ....or even a green mamba too.

    probably a krait.
they have a neurotoxin that supposedly causes very little pain or swelling, then shuts down your resptirory system.

Me, I'd go for a taipan.

    1) I'd be in Australia. Australia is cool.
    2) It wouldn't take too long for me to die.
    3) It would mean I actually got to see one once before I died.

how the hell are you going to be killed by a ball python? i mean, mine has been around my neck, and started getting tighter, but i easily just unwrapped it...so i dont see how that would happen

Sometimes, don't you look in at your ball python and know, that if you were small enough, that snake would eat you? it's kind of cute in a twisted way... then again, Bps can be such finicky feeders, they might refuse; but I know that if I got shrunk down, "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids"- style, my boa would kill/eat me in a heartbeat!

Ya know what is odd about this? Timber Rattlers are native to some parts of New York & New Jersey. I only found this out because my future brother in law told me that while in souther Jersey this past week, he saw snakes EVERYWHERE! He then said that he saw one that really caught his eye. He was so fascinated by it that he didn't even realize he was reaching to pick it up! He said then it moved & it started him out of his trance & he realized how stupid he was being. So, I asked him what it was. He wasn't certain. So I just started to send him pics of random snakes native to Jersey. After turning several non-venomous snakes down (keep in mind, he was not aware of what snake was what, i sent him pictures only) I sent him a shot of a Timber Rattler. He said "Yeah, I think that is the one."

I said,"Congrats man, you almost picked up a Timber Rattlesnake! Nicely done!"

Needless to say, he pretty much pooped himself. At any rate, I also read that they are about as docile as it comes when dealing with Rattle Snakes. I read that they will try EVERYTHING in their power NOT to have to strike. They would much rather rattle & run. I just found that pretty interesting.

I don't think getting killed by a snake with the venom that is a nuerotoxin would be all that bad. That type of venom basically shuts down the central nervous system....so does that mean with the central nervous system shutting down, which is responsible for indicating pain, would you then feel no pain and basically just black out?
