Humid Hide?

    Hi all,

Ramona has 2 hides in her tank (one on the warm side, on one the cool side), but neither is a humid hide. I'm just wondering what people think about humid hides----are they necessary for a happy BP? If so, how do you make one?

(FYI: Her humidity level is fine, and her last shed--her first with me--came off in one piece. So it's not that she really needs one, I'm just wondering whether she'd be happier with one).

Well dana. I dont use a humid hide. When it comes time to shed i spray some water (a little not alot because it could become moldy) under the warm hide, as the water evaporates it will create humidity and they love it. Otherwise if you keep the humidity at the proper level elsewhere in the tank your BP will be as happy as a clam.

i only use a humid hide because i need it to keep the humidity levels where i want them. i have never seen my bp actually use the hide though. look here for info on making the humid hide.

As long as your humidity is good, you don't need a humid hide, but if you're interested, you can read here and here about a favorite and flexible humid hide I use. Well, not me personally, I use a bathtub for a humid hide. But my biggest bp uses this and loves it.

:) Of course, Savannah is pretty much a city of steam lodges much of the year, and even up here I might not need any additional humidity to make my own.

Thanks Marla---that hide is really neat. We don't have many big plant places in Manhattan---I wonder if one of the little places around here would have those liners---I'll definitely investigate!

dana you can most likely find the liner at lowe's or home depot in the garden section.

marla, you're right. we could just stick the thing outside and not even worry about adding anything to create the steam. ick! i actually DID consider opening the window in nellie's room to up the humidity last night because she has the blue/cloudy pre-shed eyes.

As long as your humidity in the cage is good, a humid hide comes down to a matter of personal prefference. I've never used them, but Marla's design is pretty eye catching in itself and would look good in any backyard or herp enclosure .. as the case may be :)

Dana, yeah I guess Manhattan may not be the best place to find a garden store. :) If you can get to a home improvement shop or WalMart you should still be able to find it though.

mlededee, I *have* opened a window to up humidity before. It is convenient, i guess. If I get one set up in the yard, you and Carson are welcome to come check it out. ;)
