    Can I use paper towels?
This is probably a stupid question, but can paper towels be used in a glass tank when you have to mist 1-2 times a day to keep the humidity up?
I'm using Eco Earth shredded coconut husk right now, but it's so messy.

    Yes you can.
You can also use a ceramic water bowl and put it partially over your UTH to help raise the humidity.
You might have to readjust your thermostat after you get the eco out.

How wet should I let the paper towel get when misting? Will this hinder my quest for perfect humidity? Its a struggle now with the Eco Earth. :/ Also, he outgrew the hides I started him in, so I bought 2 identical, medium size bowls from the dollar store & cut doors into them....he seems to like them well enough, but when he's inside them, he pushes them all over the place. Lol. Is this normal? Any way I could fix this?

Yes it is normal, they will rearrange all the time.
You shouldn't have to get the paper towels too wet.
You have the top mostly covered now? Correct?

Yes, it's 90% covered with tinfoil. If I give it a good misting, without completely soaking everything, I can get up to 60%. By nighttime, this will fall down to 16%. I even bought a Vicks humidifier. That didn't do squat. Lol

Is this for a ball python? Because in my opinion you shouldnt mist the cage so much. I only mist my ball pythons when they are in shed. Too much humidity can also cause RI. I know dome breeders who just mist the snake when they are in blue.

It is for a BP. If I don't mist every day, the humidity would never get over 16%, which is not acceptable.

From what I've been told, RI is caused from high humidity AND low temps. His temps are great & his humidity is too LOW.

Are you using digital or analogue humidity gauge?

    Digital. Acurite from Wal-Mart.

You might want to make a humid hide.

I have one made. Just haven't put it in. Should I leave it in all the time or just during shed?

Wouldn't hurt to leave it all the time

I have been struggling with the same thing. I just found what i think is a very good solution. I took a warm mist humidifier and sat it next to the cage. I put a piece of aluminum foil so that all the steam travels up and over to the tank. So far I have been able to keep humidity at around 60% and it also helped boot my temps a few degrees since the steam is warm. I did have to only partially cover the steam, otherwise the humidity went way up around 90%.

Re: Can I use paper towels?
Another member offerered this suggestion to me and it works great. Take a towel or paper towels and run them under hot water to get it wet. Ring it out so it is very wet but not dripping. Cover 1/2 to 3/4 of the top of the screen with it. I then lay aluminum foil on top of the towel.

my humidity will spike to 70% and it will take it a day to day and 1/2 to drop below 40%. My eco earth stays dry and no moisture on the glass.

Before I was constantly misting and it was a pain...

I tried the paper towels & while it was soooo much cleaner, trying to keep humidity up was a nightmare. I just picked up some aspen today. Humidity is holding well & I think I'll like it much better than the Eco Earth. Eco Earth was way too fine and made such a mess when trying to clean.
