    Perfect sperm plug from..."Female"!?!
Ok I'm pretty sure I've just pulled the biggest most perfect sperm plug from what I thought was a female lol.

    http://i863.photobucket.com/albums/a...psnmreoi0f.jpg

It's insane because I've popped she/he/it or whatever before and never got hemipenes (talk about my popping skills lol :p) I've only ever gotten what seemed to be scent glands that are just little white bulbs on each side. And I've seen she/he/it tail wag and raise she/he/it's tail for my little male Bubo whose too young to bred and not interested (maybe because there's no girl to be interested in lol :p) I know this has probably happened to someone on this forum. Just wanted to share my new discovery! :P

Btw got her/him/it from Aquatic Critters Reptile zoo when I was young so I didn't know any better and just took their word for it. She/he/it was my first ball python haha.

Umm, well congrats I guess lol. How old was he when you got him? Popping a snake with size to it can be less than 100% accurate, allegedly they can hold their hemipenes in.

I got him when he was just a hatchling, not sure of exact age since it was a reptile shop. They don't keep up with dates.

Ball pythons don't really produce sperm plugs. Only sheds of their genitals. Females also have sheds. All of my girls have produced what look like plugs. But they're still girls. Sperm plugs are something that some species use to seal up the female's genital tracts to prevent other males from procreating with her. Koalas are an example. Ball pythons can have multiple sires to a clutch because they don't have sperm plugs.

Have any of your females produced this sort of shed thingy before?

Yes. I first freaked out but then I contacted a local breeder who put my fears to rest. If it probes and pops female, its female :)

Umm, yes they DO produce sperm plugs. Though I think you're probably talking about something completely different then what a ball python breeder calls sperm plugs. Granted they do not produce a substance that will plug up a female making it impossible for another male to breed her, the plugs we're talking about are a kind of a waxy substance that comes from trying to evert the hemipenes on the males. It's NOT just genital sheds, I can express these plugs from some of my males daily. It IS an indication that they are producing sperm and are ready to breed.

I HAVE produced plugs from females which are dried mucus expressed from the musk glands, but these plugs look different than the plugs that come from males. Unfortunatly for AlexisFitzy, judging by the shape and length of the plugs in the picture that was posted, they do look like they came from a male.

I think I'm just going to buy a probe kit and probe her/him to be 100% sure. Because after I pulled this thing out I popped her/him again and still got no hemipenes. Just small little pink scent gland bulbs that are very far apart (since Hemipenes are a little closer together than scent glands) Not red hemipenes. I've popped my male Bubo before and seen his hemipenes so I know what they look like. But once my probe kit comes I'll know for sure. Because I am pretty confused about all this because I've never Ever seen one of these before, an I've been pretty sure she's been female all this time but this thing is definitely making me think she is male now.

And please keep all the info coming guys, apparently this is a subject I know nothing about. I've never even heard of a genital shed, I've only ever heard about sperm plugs.
