As some of you know i will be getting a corn fairly soon, i have read tons and tons of care sheets already but is there anything else i need to know about them ? The snake will be a hatchling and they are super tiny.Im getting him from a breeder this time and not the pet store like my BP the snake is feeding on pinkies and he has already ate twice,he/she is 10 days old and super cute,i have plenty of colors to choose from. It is a baby of a snow and candy...wait...a snow and a ghost....grrr i forgot ! well its one of those two so i figured it will be HET for somthing ,what will it be ?

It could be het for a bunch of things. The best way to know is to ask your breeder. He or she will know best and probably answer as many questions as you can throw them :). Its always nice to know what genes your herps could be carrying.

thanks, i just found out today after calling the breeder i could go out and get a baby snake today if i really wanted to but she only has 3 left, but she has another clutch that will be hatching in september. Even though i want one right now REALLY BAD september gives me more time to buy everything i need and get all the temps right for my baby. i was thinkin about puttin it in a ten gallon tank, do you think that will be too big for him ? or to small. I dont know how fast corns grow but how long do you think the ten gal will last ?

Sounds like a smart idea to me :) As far as tank size goes ... corns dont usually get bigger than 5' and i would go by the 1 square foot of floor space to 1 foot of snake. I've never had a corn, so i'm not too sure how fast they grow. I think the 10 gal would work for a while at least.

so like a 40 gal will work good for adult size ? how fast do they grow normally ?

you gotta wait till you get the snake to come up with a good name. you know, based on its personality and good looks and stuff.

40 gallon for an adult would work.

I keep my juvenile in a 29-gallon, but she'll be moving up pretty soon. 40 gallons should keep the snake happy for its entire life - but something as small as ten gallons will comfortably house a neonate.

my bad, way up there i said she only had 3 left, actually she has about 20 or more, maybe i got the numbers mixed up....anyways.....

i know corns dont need as much heat as bp's do so would i use just a uth or a heat lamp or both ??
  • 08-17-2004, 06:47 AM
    Tigergenesis
I'd still go with a uth only for the belly heat. :)

    Brandon.O
so a uth and thats all ?

That's all you should need. Care is pretty much the same as a bp, just different/lower temps. Now, it is possible that you may need overhead heat if, say for instance, your room is cool, etc. Belly heat is important for digestion and I believe should be your main source of heat - and then supplement with overhead heat only if needed/desired. :)

ohh i had a question...i found a human heat pad a couple days ago but it has all these scary warnings on it and stuff like can cause burns and all that stuff. but when i put it on low and feel the bottom on the tank it feels warm to the touch not hot or anything, so i thought it would be okay to use .....BUT...it covers the whole ten gallon tank so i thought i could just use half of it ?? do you think that would work or should i just got out and buy the same one my bp has ?

Human heating pads are fine. Just be sure it's outside the tank, you have airflow under the pad, and be sure it doesn't have auto shutoff. As long as the temps measure okay (be sure to use a digital w/ probes or a temp gun) and measure the temp on top of the substrate (unless it's a loose substrate then measure underneath in case your corn burrows)-dont' judge the temps based on how they feel to you. I use a human heating pad for my quarantine setup. It's huge, so I just use half of it.

how do you get air flow under it ? it willl be sitting on top of a desk .
  • 08-18-2004, 06:01 PM
    UberAlice
Prop the tank up on either end with something like bricks or anything else (I've used books before in a pinch), just make sure the tank doesn't rock or wobble and you should be fine. :) This raises the tank up off the desk several inches and allows for air flow.

hmm i never knew you were suposed to do that........my bps cage is not propped up ,should it be ?

the human heat pad does not have anything sticky, how could i get it to stay stuck on??
  • 08-18-2004, 06:07 PM
    UberAlice
I prop mine because I like having the air flow under the pad, and to reduce the chance of burning the area where it's resting on (right now, on a carpeted floor area). You might try duct-taping the pad to the bottom of the tank.

will it melt the tape ?? ......well it wont be that hot but......
  • 08-18-2004, 06:33 PM
    UberAlice
It might make it a little sticky, but I don't think it'd melt it. I use a self-stick UTH, so I don't have a lot of firsthand experience with that method.

OK i feel kinda bad now, the breeder is saving two of the babies for me and she put them in a separate sterlite for me but niether of them is the one i think im getting (anymore) now im thinkin i want the candy corns so maybe i will call her tomorrow and tell her .

i still have another whole week to go !!!............but i think the candy ones are already eating becuase they are ALOT bigger than the others so maybe i can bring one of those home sooner.this is killin me !! hahaa

    Tigergenesis
LOL. I'm sure she'll understand as either way she is finding a good home for one of her babys. Besides, you can tell her that it's mostly due to the fact that they are already eating. :)
