Shedding
Hi guys,I've had my Royal for just over a week, the guy told me that he is due to shed, his skin is kinda dull, after a few days his eyes turned blue but now his eyes are going back to normal but still no shed,is still normal ? He's about a year and a half..
Thanks

Re: Shedding
Let me preface by saying in super new here myself, but with today being a holiday not too many people are on. That happened to my little guy too last month. It seemed like I missed the shed somehow, but it took a little longer and the "blue" went back to normal first. Just thought I could give you a little peace of mind until someone with more expertise comes by.
Good luck, and Merry Christmas!

Re: Shedding
Yep. Sounds like a shed coming on. Going into blue for a couple days then back to normal is just that. As long as your temps and humidity are right, I'm betting you'll have a shed in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Re: Shedding
How and what are you offering? Also, offering to frequently I've read can put them off food. You could try. Or, leave him alone, no handling, no offering food for 5 days. Then offer and see what happens.

Re: Shedding
I answered your new thread but said almost the same as Doolittle. ^^

I'm a little late answering this one, as it seems he's already shed. I wanted to touch on this for future reference, though. As you probably figured out, intervention during shed isn't usually needed, assuming your temps and humidity are correct. In fact, it can actually injure your snake if you try peeling off shedding skin. If your snake has some retained skin post shed, you can wet a towel with warm water, and let him crawl through it.

As someone else said, give him space for a few days, maybe a week. Then you can try again.

Medium is a bit subjective. Also, what he was doing when the previous owner had him may or may not be accurate. A good rule of thumb is to offer prey items that are the same thickness, or slightly larger than the thickest part of the snake.

I prefer this method over eyeballing the size compared to the snake, especially with a mouser who needs multiple mice per feeding. I feed a minimum of 10% of body weight. Some people will recommend a set feeding cycle, sometimes every 4 days, 7 days, whatever. Personally, I offer food whenever my snake starts cruising her tank more often. It's not easy to explain, but there's a difference between her normal exploration of the tank vs when she's on the hunt.

Get a scale. If you're uncertain if prey is the proper size by eyeballing them, having both weights will make it easy to tell if the food is proper sized.
