Help please !!
Hi guys,
I really need your help.. I got my snake on Saturday and his eye is pealing from the middle,I don't know much about snakes but I'm sure this isn't normal, also, his head it very dry,but I'm more concerned about his eye, please see the pic and let me know what it could be and what I could do..http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/4asuve7e.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/u9agejaj.jpg

Don't worry, his eye cannot peel. If anything it's left over skin from a previous shed. Just keep the humidity above 50% and your snake will solve the issue on its own :)

I doubt that the eye is actually peeling but a lot of my animals will get 'wrinkles' on the eye scale this time of year. It's generally a sign of being dehydrated. I personally find keeping humidity levels up at this time of year to be difficult. One thing you could try is a humid hide box. Get a plastic shoe box or small sweater box, cut an access hole in the side and stuff it with damp (not dripping wet) sphagnum moss. Make sure the sphagnum moss stays slightly damp but not wet. Give it a try, see what happens...

What type of enclosure do you have him in?

Or a plastic container also works (won't mould). Don't worry though, it's just some left over skin :) keep up the humidity as everyone has mentioned - make sure you have a hygrometer to accurately measure the level of humidity in the tank as well.
Best of luck!

I defo don't think it's just wrinkles because it's actually peeling from the middle outwards as you can see on the pic,and his head is also bad..

To be honest, I really can't tell from the picture. But if it is a retained shed that's flaking off the humid hide box will work just as well for that.

Normally 50 or above. If he's in shed try for 70. Since his head is dry, I would suspect dehydration... try to keep it up towards 70. Does he have a water dish?

Yea,it's like a sandwich box without the lid, just concerned about his eye,and he doesn't go in the water for some reason, maybe I should put the cover on and make a hole ?
-
The pictures aren't clear, but it sounds like it's some retained shed. As others have suggested, you can place a humid hide in his enclosure. After spending a bit of time in there, the shed might come off as he rubs on things.
To increase the overall humidity in his (I'm assuming glass aquarium), you can mist his enclosure, use a substrate that better retains moisture (such as coco husk), and place a damn towel over the screen top.
Good luck and enjoy your new pet!

Is it better to put the water dish ( plastic ) under the heat mat to create humidity ?

Ball Pythons don't generally swim or soak on their own, unless it's really dry or hot. So don't be concerned about him not using the water dish (except for drinking), and also don't expect him to know it helps a bad shed! If you really need to get him "moistened up," try an hour in a sterilite tub with a damp towel inside... you can also add a bit of water, maybe 1/4-1/2 inch, which will be fine since he has the towel for traction. Another thing, if you put the water dish RIGHT on top of the heat tape/pad, that will raise humidity in the tub pretty well. If none of these things work, chances are the extra skin will come off in his next shed.

When you say " tub " just a plastic box with a towel and some water, correct ? Mild water I'm guessing..

Thank you
Tub generally refers to a Sterilite or similar type of "storage box" made of plastic, like this: http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=24757 (they come in a variety of sizes, and can be purchased cheaply at Walmart, CVS, etc)
They can breathe for a while in there without holes, but probably best to poke a few just in case! And yeah, start with lukewarm water so it's not too shocking on their body.

'Tubs', 'shoe boxes' or 'sweater boxes' generally refers to plastic storage boxesmade by a variety of manufactures like sterilite or rubbermaid or iris. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes like these.

Here, check out this sticky thread: http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...hed-No-problem
(it's not specific to eyecaps, but shows you the tub/towel technique with photos) :gj:

How would you do that? Isn't your heat mat stuck to the glass under the tank? :?

I was so confused. LOL! I think people who are trying to raise humidity move the water dish under their heat lamp. If you are making a humid hide, I think that it would make sense to put it over the mat, but I could be wrong.

I will give it a go.. Thanks

Got all up in my face. :taz:

Re: Help please !!
Yep I'm agreeing with everyone about it being a possible stuck shed and eye cap. I use coco husk, and moss in my glass enclosures. I have moss in both the hot and cool hides and water dish in the middle. I also mist the crud out of the enclosures every few days to keep humidity up. I live in a dry climate and its hard to keep humidity where I want it. I do have a tub so I can "soak" my snakes but don't use it much. I throw a towel in the bottom, and just barely cover it with water except 1 corner so they can rest their heads on it. Neither of mine use their water bowls for anything except to drink and then throw their substrate in lol. I've never had a "perfect" shed but as long as everything comes off I call it a successful shed. Just stay calm and try some of the suggestions out and see what works for you. More than likely next time he sheds it will come off completely. Good luck.
