I attempted to feed Monty today even though he was in shed. I've been feeding him 2 hopper size mice because I couldn't get rats. Today I got an adult mouse & a hopper. I put the big one in first & he struck that one immediately. After he had that down, I offered the second. It took him about 20 minutes to get that one. I had to chase the mouse around with the tongs a bit to keep it in front of him & no lie, they kissed like 10 times! Ok, so they were smelling each other, but it looked like kissing. Lol! I was envisioning them becoming life long friends. :P

So my question is, with adult size mice, should I just feed him one? Or still offer him 2?

I suggest you get him on rats. Also when you put a food item in there you should just leave them alone. "Chasing" the mouse could scare the mouse and a scared mouse in with your snake isnt a good thing.

Will do. Thank you! I only did that as I was on a time crunch & had to leave & wasn't going to leave it in with him unattended & had nowhere to put it. I won't do it again. :)

You don't really need to do that. Your snake comes fully equipped to hunt down rodents and kill them without assistance.

EDIT: And I did not bother reading the next post before I responded. What I posted was already said.

Two mice is fine if that's all you can get. If you can get rats I suggest doing so. It's easier to switch when they are young

When I do make the switch, am I going to want to do just one rat?

Yea ine meal is faster. Like you said sometimes you are in a hurry and dont want to wait for him to eat 2 or 3 times. 1 appropriately sized meal is fine.

Good luck, keep your humidity high :) Our Alana just had her 2nd shed and this time it was all one piece :)

It's close to 70 right now. The pic at the beginning of the thread was taken right after cleaning the tank. I am having a hard time getting it higher though. I'm afraid of getting it TOO wet in there. :/

Some take to rats easily..my little buy, loves mice, and at times,I started him on rat pups about 3 weeks ago and it takes him anywhere from 5 mins to 2 hr to strike the rat pup,a few times he didn't even and the rat pup just died..so today I didntwanna chance anything and bought him a mouse,as soon as the mouse came near him, within 2 seconds he struck. I had a feelinG he wasn't much into rats :(. It showed today where didn't think twice about striking this mouse.

Keep it to 70 and 80 as much as possible and once your guy is out of blue,I'd say keep at 80 minimum, since once put of blue he will prob shed within a couple days tops..even mist in his hide where he chills to keep humidity up

There's no way I could even get it to 80, let alone keep it there. My apartment is extremely dry. My aquariums lost 40% of their water in a matter of weeks. After Christmas I'm moving him to an Animal Plastics T8. :)

If I can keep my enclosure to 80 you can,it's only temporary man...it requires you to put in some extra effort, which won't kill you..I have to maintain my humidity daily, which takes a whole 10 mins tops, but in shed it's take a bit more effort, quit a bit. But I make sure after he is out of blue,I keep the tank 70-80 no less,it's nt hard man and I work an avg of 12 hr days. 7am-7pm mon thru fri. .. Heavy misting,Tupperware filled with wet sphagnum moss below heat lamp and even some in his hide( make sure u don't mix moss wit aspen) ..besides that what I do is when I add wett moss to the hide,I turn up the heat mat to increase heat in the hide and with the wett moss in there as well humidity is great. I lift the hide up and there is condensation all around the hide. I also do use hides that are quit large, bigger than most say u should use,but works for my guys great. So too say it's impossible for you to do so,sounds more like laziness to me,no offense man.

I would definitely change from aspen to either eco earth (or any coconut husk) substrate, saved my sanity with humidity when I was using a tank

I am not a man. I am a woman. I use Eco Earth. I have moss throughout the tank. I have 90% of the screen lid covered in tin foil. My UTH is at 90-92. Cool side at 80. I managed to get humidity up to 77% last night after very heavy misting. Within 10 minutes it was down to 70. By the time I woke up today, down to 50. To keep anywhere close to 80, I would have to mist every 10 minutes. :/

I'm telling you, if the dryness of my house can suck out 5 gallons of aquarium water in a week's time, there's no way I can get AND maintain 80% humidity. I am open to any and all suggestions though. So far, I've done everything that everyone has said to do. :/

I would get a humidifier for the room that the enclosure is in... I have very dry heat in my place and needed to get one for my living room. I just got a cheap Vicks one at our local thrift shop for $8 :)
Having two turtle tanks in my snake room helps, and the rack is a lot better with humidity.
The tubs I have as quarantine in the kitchen are holding pretty good as well.

Do you put the Vicks in it? Or just run the water?

Just the water, but it's also good if I get a stuffy nose, I can put the Vicks in :)
