What's getting you through the winter?
Winter is here in all of its misery. It's going to be freezing and dark for the next 5-6 months. So, what are you doing in the spring/summer that you have to look forward to that will make this all worth it?

I'm going on a (kind of) cross country road trip.. Toronto to BC. I'm going to be camping the whole way and am SO excited to see mountains for the first time. Not to mention all the awesome fishing and scenery! :D

I live in Texas. There's no such thing as winter here. I finally got to turn my air conditioner off last week! Looks like I need to turn it back on again, though. :/

    I hate the winter

i work outdoors year round,so I have no choice to deal with it,but since I have no choice but to deal with it,what I do is wearas little clothes as possible when I can..I'll work outside stay moving and busy and be in a t Shirt as low as 40-45 degrees..so mental focus is what gets me through as well as the OT cause it's nuts in the winter so this $$$$$ is what keeps me going

What's getting me through the winter is that it's NOT Florida, which is where I lived last year this time. I am so happy to be back in the cold. I am not a fan of places that stay hot year round. Not a fan of being cold all the time either, but what I love about living in a desert is the dramatic season change. Freezing cold winters, scorching hot summers.

I have made the trek from Southern Alberta, where I grew up, to Windsor ON numerous times as that is where I attended university. Are you planning on staying within the Canadian border the whole time? North Western Ontario from Thunder Bay to Kenora is beautiful countryside. In my opinion, there is not much to see in Manitoba and Saskatchewan if you stay on the Trans Canada, and Alberta isn't much different until you hit the majestic Rocky Mountains. Do you know what mountain pass you will be taking from AB to BC? Roger's Pass will take you from Calgary through Banff and Jasper national parks, very beautiful but quite heavy traffic. Crowsnest Pass is a few hours south of that and takes you from Pincher Creek, AB to Fernie, BC. If you take this pass I would suggest stopping at Waterton National Park and setting up camp there. Very beautiful with lots of hiking trails. Where in BC is your final destination?

Winter here hasn't been bad at all so far. A few cold days, very light snow fall. So far so good.

Will be looking at moving out of New England in the spring/summer if anyone has any suggestions to a place with decent weather and affordability I'd like to hear them. It's expensive living in NH

What gets me through the winter is that I can cook without the AC going crazy! Large roasts, big pots of stew, chili, and soup, breads, casseroles, all sorts of comfort foods... MMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!

    Good thread.

What I want to do this winter: maybe actually catch up on video game playing and movie watching. :D

What I'm looking forward to in the spring: Tax time, exercising outdoors, nicer weather, trail hiking/walking with the dog... :)

I'll be in Canada the whole way there and will possibly be cutting through the states on the way back.
I have absolutely no idea where my destination is... I still need to sit down and plan it. I have a lot of time though :)

San Antonio in a nutshell. Save a couple bucks on air conditioning in the winter and put on a sweater when if cold fronts come through. ;)

Every couple of years we do get some nasty freezes though, because of you know, global warming.

I actually like winter. Id much rather have several weeks of cold than one week hot humid summer heat. I love snow, cuz it makes everything sooo pretty and I just think the few months of freezing temps "cleanses" everything. What gets me through it? Soup, and my comfy flannel jammies :D

How long are you expecting the round trip to take? When I made the drive, we were usually on a pretty tight schedule and didn't do much/any stopping for sightseeing. I believe the entire trip for me was 36 hours of driving, which we normally accomplished in 2.5 days (ridiculous, I know). The first time I made the drive, I was with my older brother: 2 20 year old men, 1 Hyundai Tiburon, 1 speeding ticket, 1 instance of getting lost and 1 very close encounter with a black bear and the front bumper made it a pretty memorable trip. Nothing quite like experiencing your country from the driver's seat.

Most of BC is gorgeous. I am sure no matter where you decide to make your destination, you won't be disappointed.

I wish we got winter. Ever. Stupid hot temperamental Florida. Lol. So, for the winter I will be maybe turning the air off a couple days here and there, and occasionally busting out a hoodie or some cute jacket. *sigh* I've never seen snow. I just want to build a snow man! Lol.

After being around snow your whole life and living where it's freezing for 5 months of the year every year I'd say you're not missing much. I plan on moving your way in spring

No kidding. High in the 80's these past few days. But watch....its gonna be freaking cold on Saturday for my daughter's b-day & party. I can't stand the cold so lots of blankets and using the oven in lieu of the toaster oven and roasts, ribs, maybe bust out the slow cooker. And baking sweets. I'm an excellent cook! :D

Right now we are having our 2 snow fall this year, think it will be a pretty cold winter. During the winter months I like to tie flies since I fly fish, and my wife will do a lot of reading books on her nook. Winter Sucks!

It snowed today so I made homemade bread from scratch, and a sausage, potato, and cheese casserole for supper. It was perfect fill-you-up food for the family after being outside playing in the snow and shoveling the driveway most of the day.

Me and my wife goes every year in feb to Florida....Usually at that time we have temps in the low teens and the high 20's. lol remember last year's trip went to south beach and it was like 50-60 something like that we were hearing people saying it's cold out and putting jackets on, me and my wife were in shorts and short sleeve shirts enjoying the weather! :D

Winter is great over here in So cal. It never gets below 30F, even at night.
It's usually 59-65 during the day, which is perfect imo! Plus the sun stays out the whole time!
California winter weather is my preferred weather actually. It's lets me dress lazy and it's always cool and refreshing outside ^^

For me, it's more of a "what's getting you though the summer" rather than the winter, summers are miserable, especially when you are trying to sleep ._.

I like the Winter. Living in New England, I grew up wishing I lived somewhere warm and matured into someone who couldn't imagine being anywhere else. The contrast makes each season exceptional and special in its own way. If there were snow all the time it wouldn't feel as rare and special. The same goes for a nice hot Summer day and immersing in cool water, a windy fall day with the leaves crinkling and swirling about with their elaborate colors, or an early spring day where the rain falls tranquilly and the forest is teeming with new life. What gets me through the Winter:

Being able to snuggle under blankets or crank up the heat to hide from the cold
    Warm beverages that contain alcohol
Fires - big, roaring, magical fires
Snow coating everything in the forest, the little twinkles of snow that blow off the branches and make the air sparkle like a snow globe
The stillness of the forest and the sound of the wind through frozen trees
Little animal prints in the snow and imagining where they went
    Snowballs and Snowmen
    SLEDDING
    Snowshoeing
    Crisp cool air

The list goes on and on....

I experience all of these things both indoors and outdoors. I've been doing a lot of hiking so far and enjoy bundling up to brave the cold. If you think you can't hike in Winter, buy these: http://kahtoola.com/product/microspikes/ . Cabins in the Winter are amazing with a huge pot of wine mulling atop the wood stove. Release from the burden of expectation "it's nice out so I should go DO SOMETHING" vs. "it's cold and snowing and I'm not doing a damn thing."

Winter is awesome. Rediscover it and embrace it. Take all of the things you hate about Winter and find new perspective - they can and are enjoyable.

I really don't like winter :( it's too cold! Sometimes I think I'm cold blooded. Lmao! However I do like when it snows sometimes. Where I stay it has heating that runs throughout the whole building except my room, always freezing so I have to actually wear multiple layers indoors. but what keeps me going is the fact I am 10 days away from retiring and getting a new home as well as a future Ball Python.

I'm having fun with the winter. Winter for me is always the start of a new "project". I have a tendency to go overboard on all of these projects so its a balls to the wall kinda thing each time. Last year I started some :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:ake and oyster mushroom logs. This year I started home brewing for the first time. The logs are producing decent and I'm happy with them. I just sampled my first ever homebrew beer at the end of January and it was pretty decent. Tomorrow is the first day of my weekend and I'll be starting 2 more batches of beer, a red wine and a mead(honey wine) with blood oranges in it. I love my winter projects. Who knows what next winter will bring.

Edit----the first mushroom I tried to spell is the Japanese one **itake. Apparently they wont let me spell out the whole word...I didn't even think of the "bad" word in it LOL.
