I am now bleeding a decent amount in this pet store...yes i got the rat that injured me. i am a little scared to feed him though as i dont want him to bite my snake? sorry if this doesnt make too much sense i have bandaids all over my hands and its hard to type without getting blood on my keyboard :colbert:

When in doubt cervical dislocation will give you all the benefits of a live animal with all the ease of mind of a f/t. That is if you are really worried..feisty or not that rat wont do much when it has a snake squeezing the life out of it.

Put your rodent onto a flat surface, such as a table or counter. You can use something like screwdriver or stick to put behind it's neck. Push the rodent into the table with the screwdriver behind it's neck with one hand and hold onto it's tail with the other hand. Pull on the base of the tail until you feel/hear the vertebrae pop several times and the rat is dead. It takes like 2 seconds.

First one that popped up using the search box.

If it bit you in the pet store, it's probably going to cut your finger off if you try breaking his neck.

Should probably just let your snake kill the rat. He's an expert on the subject matter.

I have to be honest, I do not have the heart to do that. The rat is in the cage now, not causing a scene or anything so it will be wrapped soon. I might start gassing with dried ice though

Now you know why I own an assortment of boas... they eat what my picky BP's don't! Well, that plus they're just really cool snakes.

My snake wouldn't eat a rat and it troed to bite both of us so I lut it in a paper bag and smacked it good with a hammer. She still wouldn't eat it so I put it in a plastic baggy in the freezer. She did eat it a week later afer I defrosted it and she "played" with it for a while. I now will only get nice rats lol. I don't do biting. My pet rats never bit me.

What is the size/age of your snake? Could be "the wall" or the season...

Why dont you all save the trouble and just feed it defrosted frozen mice, i live in the UK and it is illegal to feed snakes live food so we buy frozen mice from the pet store and defrost it at home

Don't smash the poor thing against a wall. It only stuns it. Mice are too small for some snakes, and it depends on the person and some snake won't eat f/t rodents. Mine did ONCE because she had been on a forced fast. She prefers live because it moves. I'm also sweamish when it comes to handling frozen rodents. I know it sounds funny but I am. Also if they are not frozen right or defrosted right I can smell them and it makes me nauseous. Remember I'm pregnant so I have a hypersensitivity to smells. I can't even stand the smell of raw meat right now.

Come on!!! Give the animals that keep your snakes fed a little more respect.
You don't have to like rats, but the least you can do is treat it humanely.

Personally, I hate frozen feeders. Such a pain to deal with when you have a lot of snakes. I breed my own because its economically cheaper. plus I know whats going into my rats(thus my snakes). Selective breeding goes a long way in rodent behavior. Haven't had a rat in my colony viciously bite me ever.

OP: how old and how big is your snake. Its not uncommon for adults and sexually mature ball pythons to go off feed around this time.(breeding season)

Some snakes refuse to take f/t, so the choice is either to feed them live or let them starve. I'm slowly converting mine over, but it's very frustrating and you end up grinding your teeth over it. Out of 33 I have 7 that are holding out.

since its turning into a collection of creative and also some bizarre ways of killing rhodents, i would suggest....

get one of these miniature guns with tiny bullets and tiny ammunition and shoot it.

    just kidding ^^

Prime candidate for my suggestion to infract based on admittance or advising to treat an animal (including feeders) inhumanely in the face of indisputable knowledge and humane alternatives. We can get infracted for suggesting someone break the law - I don't see how this is different. I'm pretty sure it IS against the law in some places as well.

Well, seeing as how I got called a clown yesterday by this person regarding not telling someone to use a hand warmer from Walmart to keep their snake warm I have to agree with you on this one. This person has no regard for anyone or any living creature.

People are going to do this stuff regardless but I feel they should not be encouraging it or sharing it here as it sends the wrong message to new keepers and also serves as public record against our hobby. It could be easily taken out of context and thrown into bad press: "common practices include smashing rats in bags"
