okay i am not too lazy to care for my snake, but i am wondering if there is an auto everything plug? i know there are plugs with timers that let you set times things turn on and off, but is there one that can detect heat, and moisture, and make stuff run when needed? even if they are sperate units for heat and humidity, i would be interested in auto stuff. less work, just more observation on my part. would anyone recomend any reliable brands??? thanks

Cage Temp questions
lol damn lazy herpers. ;) I'm not sure about all that auto stuff. All I'd say is if it's for a ball python, why would you need auto lights and stuff? They don't need any light at all really. Unless you want a viewing light. Then just an infrared bulb would do. As for auto misting, I don't think that's needed either. If your humidity levels are low, then adding some sphagnum moss in the tank and/or misting the tank a few times a day would keep humidity up usually. And the auto heat thing....you can get a rheostat and connect it to your heat pad, so once that heat pad hits the temperature you have it set for, it'll shut off, then turn back on when it needs to heat up a bit again. I'm not familiar with them though. Someone can surely help you much more. :)

Actually theres an auto mister ... I'll give you a link to it.

You can use an auto mister with a timer and a thermostat and if you want it, a light on a $6 lamp timer from Lowe's. The light in my herp room is on a timer.

Mike is home!!!
i want an auto timer for my light cause it gets way cold at night, and i want to set it for a 12/12 cycle. during the day the heat is fine, but there are times when it gets kind of cold, and being at work for 10 hours a day, i would love an auto heat detector. if it got too cold when i was gone, then it would turn on for me.. if it got too hot, it would turn off. what is a rheostat? i was going to guy a heat pad, but 30 bucks for a 5" pad doesnt seem like a deal. i read a few posts on human heating pads, and am stopping by target tonight. i was using slate rocks under the heat lamp to give them a place for belly heat, but a pad would be nice. i like the auto turn off feature, but would it turn on again when the heat got too low? i like an automister cause it would stop me from having to use a mister bottle. i could set it to go every few days or so. i was also thinking about using that ultrasonic fog machine. i would like to mist by a layer of fog. would that be okay? no respratory problems with fog, or mists? if everything was auto, i can just set it and monitor instead of constantly adjusting. i want it so if i forget these things, they are all set.

Well first you get yourself a roll of duct tape, swiss army knife, a thumb tack, and the acurite digital thermometer/hygrometer ... cut the end off .... OH WAIT, i'm not MacGyver! ;) Actually very nice thermostats/rheostats are available that will control the amount of heat your enclosure gets. They come with heat probes you place inside your enclosure to let the device know whether to not to increase the amount of electricity going to the heating pad, or to turn it on/off. The link Blink posted to an auto mister is nice, but it doesnt sense whether the humidity is low or not. You could set a timed one up with the DIY humidifer we had and a light timer, but it too wouldnt sense how low or high the humidity is.

I am off from work for a few more weeks right now so it is easy to check my temps and stuff at all times of the day. It remains pretty constant once you get to know what needs to happen (i.e temp of room, amount of air circulation, ambient room humidity). However when I go back to work I will get the rheostat thing and a UTH set up (cause it will be getting cooler then, and the infared bulb I have right now works fine for heat).

my problem solved. i went to wal-mart and got an acurite hygrometer. it has indoor and an outddor probe. the outdoor temp and humidity are on the same thing probe, which is alright. i just need to get a second one to gauge the temps all around. for now this will do. i also got a heating pad. a human heating pad with 3 temp settings. there were no "water-proof" ones, but my setup isnt wet. it was rated for high moisture, so i figured this should be good. i also got another hide to add, and some fake jungle leaves vine kinda thing to add color and shading, and a lpace to climb. they have suction cups on them, so i dont know if that will hold so well as far as a snake climbing. but it will make a great curtain for hide entrances. it was 10 bucks, but someone mis-labeled a whole rack of em at 2 bucks, and petsmart honered the price. i was very happy. i was also very impressed with the on-staff vets...
anyway, i am now thinking about placement. right now the 55 gal is on the carpet. i want to put something between the heat pad and carpet.. maybe just cardboard would be alright.? i saw the sterelite containers at wal-mart, and they were very transparent. i want to get those now too, but i want to build a housing for them. i am going to draw up the blue prints this weekend. i want to have a housing unit i can slide the sterilites into and kind of keep em in a box or frame, so only the front shows. i want it to be more pleasing to the eyes. but i am also thiking i can build something out of lexar, which would be much more durable, and totaly see through. of course i am getting off the subject, and kind of babling.. so i will end it here. :pc: <--- this is me all the time.. LOL!

i am like that at work too. good thing i have a cubicle. they are my new thing. i am going cage crazy. i want to build a 100 cages now and have 10 for each cage. they are great at 15 bucks. 2 temps and a humidity. even has a max hi/lo so it beeps when it reaches that point. the max hi/lo is for both temps and humid. now all it needs to do is make me a sandwich!

Wait Kontron you got me a bit confused, You realize you have to put the heat pad under the tank, not inside it ... RIGHT?

Musta missed that the first time. How do you mean the 55 gal is on the carpet? Is it just resting on the floor? Or are you saying that you are using carpet as your substrate? You definitely want the heating pad outside and under the enclosure. You'll also want to find some way to place a small air gap in between the tank and the heating pad so the excess heat can escape. If the tank is on the floor, i would suggest a couple strips of 1x2 or even ( someone suggested it ... cant remember who but thank you whoever you are ) some legos. I would suggest against putting the heating pad inside the enclosure. That way your bp cant get himself/herself under the substrate and possibly get burned.

:teevee: no no.. the 55 gal tank itself is on the floor. i do not have a stand big enough or sturdy enough. it is actualy meant for a fish tank, so it is very big and heavy. of course i would not put the pad "in" the tank. i mean seeing as how the tank rests on the carpet, should i place something between the pad and the floor, to avoid a possble fire or something. i am thinking about buying a timer. maybe set it to run for 2 hours off for 2 hours kinda deal... or whatever it may take to keep the temps at a nice state, but avoid overheating. right now i am testing it in the smaller 20 gal. i think i will be moving roswell away from roo now that the mites seem to be gone on both of them. i was going to wait until my roomates moved out and we had an extra room, that was on the 10th, but i went to petsmart and got stuff i want to put in there for roswell. i like to make little landscapes for animals.. it is so much fun. and i cant wait till i get get some substrate. i got a bag of cyprus mulch, but do not like it that much. sticks that are poking and jabbing, really dusty too. had to rinse alot. i think i am going back to eco earth, and i am going to mix sphagnum moss into it, and put some moss into roswells hide. i think i want to pickup a bag of bark too. i like to have more then one terrain. i want to make a patch of it here and there. i prefer the eco earth out of everything i used. real easy, cheap, and holds humidy well. in fact it kept the humidity at 60 with an all screen top. when the snakes get a lot bigger and i canafford to build a nice looking frame for the sterilite i will be selling the 55 gal. i want to make the sterilite look as nice as possible, it has to be hidden, with a nice looking view window. the stuff i saw at wal-mart was 8 bucks for a huge thing, and it was very easy to see through. not hazy at all.. just nice and semi-clear...well anyway im getting off the point.... :blahblah:
in tank no,
tank on carpet yes,
substrate: cyprus mulch & shpagnum moss,
snakes: very happy
:bounce:

Its a human heat pad, so its safe to the human touch ... doubt it will hurt the floor :)
I actually had my heat pad on the carpet on for over five hours before I realized it was on, Carpets fine.

i just need a timer for it now. i have to get all the same things for my g/f's cage. ohh well i like to buy stuff.. hahaha.
-
I didnt think you'd have the heating pad inside, but just had to ask :). I'd still put something between the floor and the tank just to raise it up a bit. It lets the excess heat disipate some, and you never know when your bp is gonna try to burrow under the substrate. Just my $.02. Thanks for the cliff notes btw ;) It sounds like you are well on your way to creating some awesome lookin enclosures. I definitely want to see some pics :)

yeah i may move roo out of the 55 gal. sooner. too big and bulky for me. i am trying to convince my g/f to get rid of it, but it is tough. it is her tank and snake. i told her we can sell it and get everything needed for a nice sterilite setup, or at least a 20-30 gal, cause thats all she will ever need. i think i may try to document a step by step DIY.
