Kaa Acting Strange
Kaa is looking very malnurished to me anyway. He still looks flabby, little lumpy, He's eating okay, he ate a rat pinky a few days ago. I'm think he's still 20 grams or less now. He's not showing signs of Upper Respiratory problems, or internal parasites, and I'm also noticing he's choosing the cooler side of his tank, more so then his hot side, which is worrying me since he can't use his UTH right now due to it being too hot and me needing to get a thermostat and infrared thermometer still. Little short on fundings till pay day on the 1rst, but we are selling are mini fridge and we're trying to sell our amp, that nobody seems to want.
Do I have to continue feeding him rat pinkies? Or can I move to something a little more bigger? Rat pups are too big, sampson ate one, and that thing was like the size of a very obese adult mouse.
The pinkie Kaa ate, didn't seem all that filling, it more or less the size of a mouse fuzzy.
What can I do? I'm so worried for him.

You have a ball python that weighs 20g? Or he's lost 20g?
-
20 grams
He was 20 grams last time I weighed him and before I fed him the rat pinky. He's still a baby I guess. I assumed he was a month old or so because of how old the ad for him was. He's not as big as Sampson is, and sampson is on rat pups, and weighs 220 grams. Kaa is smaller and barely weighs anything, or my scale just isn't picking it up cause he's too light. I just don't know what's going on.
I've fed him once the week before aftering bringing him home and he had eaten a mouse fuzzy, but he hasn't gotten any bigger or fatter since then and hasn't seemed to gain any weight since this last feeding.
Let me take some pictures of him, one sec. I think if you guys actually saw some better pics, you might be able to help me a bit better with some adequate information.
-
I would say try a small fuzzy, or see if he'll take two pinkies
Also you think he's 20g or you've actually weighed him?

So he's only had two feedings for you?
And wow that's one small baby!

20g seems way out of bounds of a normal BP range. Kind of an odd question, but are you sure it's a ball python?
If it is, it sounds very unhealthy to me. I would take it to a vet.
Maybe one of the breeders who's had a lot more experience with hatchlings and babies can talk to this, though. They may have seen BP's this small before. To me, though, if it is a BP, it sounds like it's time to go to the vet.

Re: Kaa Acting Strange
We had a few runts in a clutch from time to time, many survived and actual attained average sizes. Rat pinks every five days for the little guy, hit him up to rat fuzzies every 5 days at ~60g , then straight to pups every 6-7 days. His behavior makes me think he is thermoregulating or has just gotten used to the place well enough that he wants to move about.

Are you sure he only weighs 20grams? He looks a little bigger than that to me. The pictures are hard to judge but I would say at least 60+ grams. He looks about the size of my mojave. And he's around 80ish.

If that's the case, then either my husbu read the scale wrong, or it's not picking up his weight correctly. Any words for the loose skin? Is that normal?

What are you weighing him with? I am kind of doubting it right now.

Re: Kaa Acting Strange
Based on those pics I would throw him a pup any day. The flab is of little concern as long as it is not excessive.

Agreed!!

The "flab" is actually loose skin because he is so thin. He is most likely bigger than 20 grams, but his spine is showing big time.
Try weighing something that you know the weight of... that will tell you if the scale is accurate.
I would definitely be feeding every 5 days for now, maybe even every 4

I am not seeing too much spine, then again it's probably due to years of having them come in with nothing but a spine. I would not suggest every 4 days, his stomach has likely shrunk a bit and he is not retic, obviously. Every five days is going to yield some good results...I can see that excess "flab" filling in after 4-6 feedings.

Did you have a weight from the breeder when you purchased him?

Re: Kaa Acting Strange
Flab is loose skin. Hes suppose to be larger/heavier than what he looks like. He can take larger prey than rat pinks.
I'd feed him rat fuzzies or mouse hoppers ever 4-5 days till he gets a healthy body condition.

We Purchased a mechanical scale at wal-mart :\ It was the most inexpensive one they had.

He looks a bit bigger than my albino and bee and they're 60g and 77g but weight can be deceiving. I'm putting mine on a 5 day feeding schedule (if they feed) My two fit so easily in my hand. I could probably have them both on my hand coiled up and I have small hands!
You want to get yourself a digital scale! I use a food scale for my guys, much more accurate and I'm sure mine was inexpensive

Thanks Everyone.
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone. You've all been so nice to me, even though, I'm not really that bright of a person. I really do love my snakes, and it's been quite a joy having the chance to own and care for them. I've asked some pretty dumb questions since I've joined, but this whole thing has been a learning experience for me, and it's helping me to get better everyday. So again, thank you all for being so awesome and helpful. I'm really praying hard that Kaa will recover ok without any further surprises.
He was adopted, so I know little about him, other then he's a very sweet tempered little boy, and I'm proud to have such a tame fascinating creature. n_n

If someone doesn't know the answer, no question is dumb.
Keep asking your questions! :)
We all started somewhere too.
Good luck with your boy. Keep us posted on his progress.

Do not worry, I do not laugh at dumb questions until I log off. :D

My 2013 pastel on a digital scale about 20 hours after eating for future reference if it helps...
