Female pushing male away
Hi,
This is my first time breeding. I introduced a male with a female for the first time today.
I monitored them for a little bit, and noticed what looks like obvious rejection from the female. At the slightest contact, she would tense up, do some sort of twitchy move, and push him away. He keeps trying to get close, but she's having none of it.
I certainly was not expecting them to lock for me within the hour, but this makes me wonder if I should leave him in there at all.
Is this kind of behaviour common? Is it safe to keep him there? He is about 800 grams, she's around 1900.
Thanks

Dont take it the wrong way but are you sure its a female? What your describing almost sounds like male combat (when 2 males bump into each other). Is it just a twitch or is she throwing her body against him?

Hey, thanks. Well, no. I'm not 100% sure as I've never sexed her. But she came from a reputable breeder, and I figure at 1900 grams it would be too big to be a male?
It's not like a charge, more like a violent "don't touch me" kind of twitch.

Re: Female pushing male away
Yeah, that bumping isnt exactly normal, imo. See if she does that with another male or confirmed female.
Males can certainly get that large.
I'd sex her to double check again. It almost does sound like male-male behavior. If she really is female, then she must be ultra sensitive. Its rather odd to see females do that.
I always sex my new snakes immediately when they arrive to double check. Sometimes breeders mess up.

Re: Female pushing male away
I have a big normal girl 3000+g (proven female) who would do this to my spider male when she was first paired with him. Eventually she stopped and let him do his business..maybe she's just not in the mood?

Re: Female pushing male away
Is It her whole body? Or is she tail wagging?
Could be 2 boys also. Double check sexes.

Thanks everyone for the replies!
Unfortunately, I don't have a probe to sex her right now. Need to get me a set of those.
However, I woke up this morning to a much more promising sight (excuse the poor quality pic).
So, maybe she was indeed just not in the mood at first?

Re: Female pushing male away
Pushing or bumping the male off by the female is very common! See it all the time. An aggressive male will keep working her until she gives in.

They are flirting. He will eventually win :gj:

I have had a few virgin girls last year and one this year who just flipped out when first paired. I knew they were females and the reaction from them made me check anyways. He looks like he is moving in on some action :gj:

Hey, thanks again for all the replies.
It looks like he's finally won the battle :)

I've seen my girls do it when they "aren't feeling it". They definitely look promising in that pic! Closer than any of my girls have let the boys near so far.
Edit: just saw the newest pic, congrats!

It doesn't happen every time, but it's definitely not uncommon. It's one of the reasons I suggested another user on here be careful about breeding in glass tanks. I've seen breeding pairs get rowdy enough that I'm sure they would have cracked or broken a tank...

Re: Female pushing male away
Lucky you, ive had just the opposite. I put our lemonblast male in with our bumblebee a few days ago...within minutes she started scenting and wagging her tail. All he did was sit there. Maybe he even yawned lol. And i left him in there for three days...no courting, no locks, nothin. The female seemed a little agitated. Looks like yours finally figured things out :D
