5 Tub, 41 QT Melamine Rack I built
Just finished building this rack, and I am very pleased with the results. It took me under two hours to put together as none of the melamine had to be cut (Used 10 identical precut sections of melamine that Home Depot sells). It cost me just under $175 including heat and tubs. Only problem is that is is reallllly heavy! The casters make it pretty manageable though.

If you don't mind my asking, what are your shelf dimensions? Length and width.

I built a 6 tub 41 qt that i traded for a female mojave, and yes the main downside to melamine is that it's SO HEAVY lol but other than that melamine racks are awesome.
    Nice work :gj:

The shelves are 15-3/4" x 35-5/8". Home depot sells these as is with no cuts necessary, and they perfectly fit the sterilite 41 qt tubs.

Wow!! That is an awesome homemade rack! I wish I were as handy as you! I'm terrified to build my own rack! I feel like I would somehow burn my house down when it comes to the heat tape, and when you've been through a house fire due to the house being really really old and the wiring being faulty you get really cautious lol. Congrats on a successful DIY rack! That's is oh so very cool!

Good job looks nice. I have a question - I see you wired the top 3 strips of heat tape together and the bottom 2 together. What kind of connection did you make from heat strip to heat strip. Did you just twist the wires together and slide them into the eyelet clips or just solder them directly to the heat tape ?

Bang up job there. Looks great. I hear weight is one of the drawbacks of melamine, but the casters should take care of that. :gj:

I twisted them together and soldered them to the tape. I like the connection I get from soldering much better then the clips.

Will the humidity requirements for a BP affect the melamine eventually? I am considering building enclosures from melamine, but am concerned about how long they would last. From what I have seen, sealing the seams with silicone would help. Don't want to build something that will need to be replaced quickly.

When I'm ready for a rack I think I'll be using your plan. Looked up the pieces at Home Depot and looks like it shouldn't be an issue to find them locally. Only thing is that mine seems to come out a bit more pricey but that might change by the time I actually decide to do it. Thanks for the pics :gj:

I love using melamine for racks. I built one four years ago that has been in constant use and is still in perfect working condition (the sides and corners are pretty beat up). They are fine for the humidity in the tub, but will swell up massively if the actual melamine gets any water into the exposed sides.

Would definitely recommend using melamine..the only downside I can see is the weight
