Sometimes I wish I were more like Kodieh

About 6 months ago I went to a different Petco that usual for my rat because it was closer. I get the rat, start to check out, and that’s when it started!

I could tell before she even spoke that this one was going to interrogate me on my feeding practices, some of them just give off that vibe. She did not disappoint! She started slow, “Do you always feed live?” I told her that I do. “You should try frozen. It’s cheaper and it’s safer for the snake.” I explained that I only have one snake, I don’t need or want to buy in bulk and it’s just more convenient for me this way. She started saying something about the rats attacking the snake, I wasn’t really listening, I was checking my Facebook. Apparently mistaking my burying my face in my phone for keen interest in her vast snake keeping knowledge, she went on to ask if I feed in a separate enclosure. I almost said that I do just to end the conversation, but I didn’t really have anywhere to be so I played along. After about a 15 minute run on sentence about all the ways this is an accident waiting to happen (keep in mind, she has no idea what kind of snake I even have!), she finally stopped. I think only because she had to take a breath.

I get something like this every time I buy a rat regardless of which store I go to but most of them drop it pretty quickly. This one had some staying power! Anyway, just as we’re finishing up (I should say as she was finishing up, I was done 20 minutes prior) she leans in all secret-like and whispers, “I breed rats and I sell them for a lot less than here. I’m not supposed to tell people while I’m at work, but if you give me your number I can call you when I have some.” Right. Because there’s nothing I’d love more than to continue this conversation via telephone every week for the rest of my snake’s life. I told her that I’d take her number and call her. Don’t judge, we’ve all done it!

Fast forward to this morning. This chick calls me and starts talking like we’re best friends! “Hey! I just wanted to let you know I have some small rats!” “Uh. Ok. I have a bird. I got new shoes the other day.” Who is this and why is she calling me to tell me she has ra….NO! That fruitcake took my phone number off the paper you have to fill out when you buy a feeder! And then she called me SIX MONTHS LATER! Cable Guy, anyone?

I can’t really be mean to people, so I just let her try to sell me rats. She went on and on about the differences in bone density between the breeds, what colors most snakes like better, what sizes she recommends, all kinds of crap I wasn’t asking her about or responding to. I’ve never in my life seen someone work so hard for $3. She was like, “We do this really neat thing where we call you each week on your feeding day to remind you!” Oh yeah? Some people view stalking as anything but really neat.

I finally told her I was getting another call (I wasn’t, no one calls me). In retrospect, I probably should just tell her the truth. Unfortunately I can’t think of a polite way to say, “You talk too much and you creep me the hell out! If Petco rats were $35 and the nearest Petco was 75 miles away, I’d still go there before I’d ever initiate contact with you for any reason!”

She’s going to call again isn’t she?

10/10 would feed her off.

She wont need to call...I feel she will probably just show up at your house...possibly wearing a mask made out of someone elses face...just sayin...good luck with that LOL

You guys have some messed up practices in the states. You have to give your phone number to buy a feeder rat?

That seems strange to me here in Canada. If I go to any of the stores here in Hamilton Ontario and ask for a live rat pup I get no interrogation no lectures I don't have to provide a phone number. The only thing I have to worry about is "Are they out of rat pups this week? I hate having to get a mouse."

I'm not sure how it works at the independent stores. At Petco you have to give your name, address, and phone number and sign a paper saying that you'll take care of it until you feed it off.

I've gone to two different Petco stores here and they're basically the same as far as the lectures/interrogations. I've never purchased a rat yet where one of their employees didn't ask questions and respond with why my answer is wrong.

That was a good read. I'm just the opposite I would have fed her a line of BS to see what she would say. I would have played dumb and said no this isn't fair a snake your terrified of them......and see where it went. I know I'm mean but it is fun to do.

Or you could really create a stir by going into the Petco and showing her boss your phone log where she called you and telling them she's stalking you to sell you feeder rats that she offered up while you were in the checkout... Pretty sure you won't have to deal with her at that petco much longer after that :) But she may show up wearing a mask made out of skin like someone else said after that....

I could never bring myself to do that. Her job to get her to stop calling me doesn't seem like a fair trade off to me. Besides, Kodie taught me how to Blacklist her from my phone. Problem solved! I just can't be seen on that side of town anymore and I think I'll be fine!

Sounds like a real winner, pass on my # to her for sure!! :D

Why don't you think it's a fair trade? I'd consider it a public duty because she's harassing people. Since she called you out of the blue using a phone number she wasn't supposed to have, you know she's got to be doing it to other people. Probably a lot of other people, considering that she didn't take the social "No, I'll just take your # if I want contact" to heart. She's willfully abusing information she got at the expense of her job. And I wouldn't put it past someone like that to use your address as well, is all I'm saying.

I'd only worry if she didn't have the skills to get another job - but she'd clearly make a grade A telemarketer and they're always hiring. Plus, they review the calls there - she'd get in trouble if she constantly didn't remove people there, so if you ask to get removed from a list, they have to do it. Though you do have to phrase it in a specific way.

I would report her. She's violating private customer information.

I'm not sure that our local chain pet stores sell live specifically for feeders. I am pretty sure that if you even BREATHE the word "snake" most will refuse to sell you the rodent, citing animal cruelty...

Petsmart here will not, but Petco does. I was refused at Petsmart once so I left and went back after I smoked a cigarette. This time I said I wanted a pet mouse. She didn't fall for it.

I had friends who had to feed their 2000g female and their hatching spider female. All we had was a petco, and once the staff caught on to the fact that they came in every week for new rodents, my buddies would hire different friends every week to go "adopt" feeder mice after being chased out of the store twice.

This was very entertaining. I had some good laughs.

Pretty nuts to be refused a rat or mouse because it'll be a feeder. I'm glad the local feed store her sells their rats and mice with the intention that they be used as feeders.

Our Petco doesn't sell live feeders either. It's actually against corporate policy to sell live feeder animals.
I don't see why it matters anyway since their rats are from feeder stock either way.......

Both of ours do, and they know they're feeders. I once asked if they have different ones depending on what it's for (pet vs feeder) and the girl said they don't, they only ask because the "adoption" papers are different.

I haven't gotten any calls yet....

I would actually tell that creeper to piss off and never call me again, or I WILL call corporate, which will most likely end in her subsequently getting fired. I have no qualms about telling people stuff like that.

I told you, Kodie taught me how to block her from being able to call me. She did say she was calling from her cell, not their "business" number so I guess there's still hope! Head's up, if she calls me again, I'm totally giving her your number!

.....wow, seeing as how the nearest Petco is 100 miles I'm glad I don't have to deal with this, than again I have hundreds of rats. :P still this is stupid but hey, that's my opinion

Okay I swear it is okay to be rude sometimes.....you have to do it creatively though, or you can start asking tick questions and catch them up on how little they don't know. Salt water reef on top of our new bp, so we deal w/ petco a lot and I don't even sign things at mine anymore.... I understand a dog cat or even a snake (not that they were caring for it), but for something that is going home to be a meal? and who are they to lay down the parent trip anyways? I think the company is just creepy now that I think about it.....great rant~~

I know I am new here but thank you, you are right and they never learn. You are doing her a favor and teaching her something she should of learn a while ago.

We have a couple small local chains that sell feeder rodents with no hassle. Petco and Petsmart here only sell "pet rodents" and also won't sell them to you if you say something about breeding them.

Just in case no one noticed, brandi is trying to say Kodie is a jerkface and shes too nice.

That implication is accurate.

Well Kids, here's a lesson for you, especially you girls.

NEVER give your real address or phone number to anyone you don't want to call you. Make up fakes and use them. Even I do that when something or someone insists I fill out information I don't want to give them.

Other than that, good job Brandi on the story telling.
