advice appreciated- am I getting a fair price?
I am thinking of picking up a 2012 mojave male and a 2013 pastel female on the 5th from a local keeper who lost his job. He has all the important records and dates, and the snakes are well taken care of, what I'm concerned about is the price he wants for both of them. Is $250 too much for both? Or is it a fair price? I'm just getting into ball pythons and these will be my first morphs (if I get them) and I just don't want to be fooled into thinking I'm getting a good deal if I'm not, you know? I would like to start off right, and not make many mistakes. I figured I should ask first before I make the drive, so thanks ahead of time for all the help :)
Here are pictures of them

That's a fair price in my opinion.
-
Good price. I'd go for it. Animals look pretty good looking too!
-
Thank you! I feel better about the price now that I know I'm not being ripped off. I just wanted to make sure, because $250 is a lot to me, and with hours at work being cut, I have had to save up for them
-
Price sounds good and the animals look good as well
-
From what I've read and have heard from around here, that price is def good.
-
The price isn't bad.
You should ask how much the Mojave weighs.
-
I will be getting the records and weights and everything and making the final decision when I get there. I would rather see them in person first, and he just gave me the option to buy a 2012 female pastel for $75. I might be getting 3 snakes this weekend :)

I would take that extra 0.1 Pastel. She will get you there a year earlier for $75. It costs that much to feed one for a year.

Re: advice appreciated- am I getting a fair price?
As long as they're both healthy I'd take the deal, and as the poster above me said, get the other pastel female as well if you can swing it.

Id go for it if theyll fit into your breeding plans!

I personally wouldn't pay much over $150 for that. Are you buying local? If it's shipped, you're gonna pay more.
$250 for a browned out pastel and a small 2012 male isn't a "good" deal but it's not unheard of.

I'm not putting a lot of emphasis on the photos alone, colors never show up well unless its dang near pro photography. I'm picking them up locally, and I'm going to weigh them and see them in natural light before I make my final decision. And I'm also not a morph snob, these will most likely be just pets, seeing as I'm a noob and know nothing about breeding, although I would like to try breeding sometime in the future, after I learn way way more of course. I'm not saying anything bad about selective breeding only the best, just saying that I'm looking at these snakes more as pets than breeding stock. They will have names and hang out with me when I watch movies and go with me when I take my dogs on walks.
I do thank you for your opinion and taking the time to respond however, so don't be offended when I say that I'm:cens0r:willing to give them a good home, seeing as the owner can't take care of them anymore, regardless of how browned out and small they are.

He was just trying to help you with price. It's not about being a "morph snob". To me I think of it like when people breed bettas. You can either start with two petstore quality veiltail bettas where the babies produced are worth nothing and you have to be ready to hang onto all of them or gift them to people. Or you can drop a few hundred extra and get a pair that is going to give you show quality babies. Either way you're still paying all that money for setups and food and the same amount of time if you have bad breeding stock vs. good breeding stock. One gives you more "eh" quality babies and the other gets you nicer, and more sellable, babies. To me it's the same costs to feed and house them so why not start with the best stock you can afford if you want to breed? No need to put more low quality morphs out there.
Now your original post said nothing about taking them in to give them a good home. The opinions you were given were going off of what you posted, about using them to breed and whether that money was appropriate for how they are.
-
I never said anything in my original post about wanting to breed. I said the guy lost his job and I didn't want to get ripped off so I was asking about the prices for the particular morphs. But whatever, if they are garbage animals because they don't look good enough to breed, they must not be very good as pets either. Ask a simple question and I am reminded why I don't stay active on forums for very long.

You blew this way out, and I simply said quality isn't there. You could have taken that for what it is, but decided to remark negatively.
This industry is about quality, pastels can go for as little as $30 to $150 depending on how quality the animal is.
Unfortunately, you HAVE brought in breeding as a possibility. So, either they're pets or they're potential breeding stock. Not one or the other when it suits the response you wish to create.
I'm upset you are basing the whole forum off of a simple exchange and difference of opinion. I urge you to reconsider. But, the decision ultimately, is yours.

the deal seems fair :)
the quality of the specific morph is only relevant for breeding and does not affect the quality or health of the pet.
and when i look at the substrate under the snake and the pics in general, i think the pics are quite dark and the snakes will look really different in person. they may be totally fine examples of the morph after all.

According to your thread you do not own Ball Python's at this time, so your response should be taken with a grain of salt.
The deal is fair if that's what he's willing to pay for it, it's a buyers market where the prices are set more or less by what people will pay rather than what they have to.

No mention of breeding. If I ever breed in the future, I certainly WONT be using craigslist adopted animals!
I will just let the guy know that the price isn't fair and I won't be purchasing them. That's all I asked in the first place, and I didn't ask about the quality of the animals.

You misunderstood entirely, because quality makes price.

Quality Dictates Price
Fair Price for those is about $165 +/- $25
-
165$ for 3 snakes? 250 sounds fair... As for taking them on walk please don't do that... The snake is not for taking on walks it will stress it out and not everyone likes snakes.

It was originally 250 for two snakes, add a third for an extra 75.

I feel sorry for you then, or thankful for the more pleasant market in Oklahoma.

sounds like a good deal for 3 morphs to me. i would def check them out in person and if YOU like how they look then get them, some snakes look better in person anyway, i know its hard to capture true colors in photos.
